Looking in EASA Part FCL.1010 I cannot see any reference to the need to have a valid medical to hold a TRE/TRI for simulator work. Is this the case?

Why would you need a medical to operate a simulator?

To hold a valid TRE/TRI you need a valid medical. If you only want to work in the Sim &/or have lost your medical you can be SFE/SFI.

You can work in the Sim as a TRI/TRE as I do now.

Chatting to another colleague he queried this with Austro Control (Austria) when he lost his medical and they asked why he wanted to be a SFI/SFE as he could stay as a TRI/TRE for simulator work.

Yes, you can work solely in the sim as TRE, but you still need a medical. If an individual state chooses not to enforce this …

The snag is with a TRE you need to hold the appropriate instructor and type rating for the type on which you are examining. The instructor and type rating on which you instructing are on your Part FCL licence which requires a medical to be valid. So no medical, no licence and the TRE certificate is invalid.

I got an SFI/SFE on the basis on my TRI/TRE (just in case) from the Dutch. The CAA have historically refused to issue the SFI/SFE until you lost the medical. I'm amazed some NAA are turning a blind eye to the whole medical bit. What else do they not get?

CAA are now happy to issue SFI/SFE on the basis of your TRI/TRE, but of course there is paperwork and a fee...

Could you give any further details? Is there a specific form for this or is it an email to FCLWEB?
