Complete audio at eltiempo dot com. You can hear the female pilot reading back instruction to hold on Alpha. After the incursion alert was issued, the male pilot takes over the comms and tries to deny at first, but then acknowledges the first instruction and apologizes for his mistake.
After last year's Avianca pilot strike we stopped seeing mature aviators and started seeing three and four bars on younger chaps and ladies, for the most part under 30. They're commanding Avianca's A318-19-20 and 21 national ops, classic and Neo.
Are we heading for trouble here?

Yes sir. That's it. A bit past halfway through the audio ATC has a fit. They used that as the heading for the news piece. Translates: "¡My God, Lord, I almost died here! (...), 9761 entered the runway just as Republica was on its take off roll (...). The guy misunderstood me and went in."
I've flown out of Rafael Nunez hundreds of times. Default is RWY01. We almost always rotate at or slightly past Alpha. This was indeed very close...

You read the link that is in post #2 and when it mentions "1730 meters of backtracking" you think ... what ?
Then you see the picture of the airport further below and understand why.
It is not Male in the Maldives where you pushback into the runway, but it is not far from it.

Yeah. And don't forget we get scheduled arrivals from four different US carriers, KLM 787-9, Air Canada, LATAM and AVA international, and the occasional Air Force 1, specially when Clinton spent the odd weekend here and when leaving uttered the famous words: "What happens in Cartagena stays in Cartagena". Time for a parallel taxiway.
Cartagena de Indias, was it Clinton or Obama? His bodyguards were digging into reclaiming land from the Bay Area, it does not take much of effort except that all that money is still being used to make peace with insurgents in that part of the world.
was the controller speaking in “English” when given the Avianca instructions to hold short?
