I'm not sure $9,118 pays for all of the costs of the diversion, but at least it's a start. Hopefully this guy has the financial resources to pay the amount.

Watch the yahoo video . You fell for the misprint in the title. NOT $9,118. i believe they dropped the first 9... $99,118. 10% of his income yearly till it's paid off.

About time. Hopefully the precedent has been set.

Good, it should be a worldwide precedent, the sooner this becomes the norm the better, what it needs now is publishing in all the newspapers to let these scroats know that actions have consequences.

Actually, that article says $9,118 also. It may be a case of all the news services picking up the same (erroneous) story, but most links I can find agree on the lower number.

In any case, it's not the first time:

Unruly passenger ordered to pay airline nearly $100K (https://nypost.com/2017/08/30/unruly-passenger-ordered-to-pay-hawaiian-airlines-nearly-100k/)

One small detail: in the US, court-ordered restitution is rarely paid, if ever.

I'd be shocked if Delta gets one stinkin' DIME from this person. It's all meaningless posturing...and the psychos know it. Total waste of resources.

This restitution stuff for drunk pax has been going on in the U.S. for decades without much visible effect from what I see. After an infamous incident on United in 1995, Air Force Academy graduate Gerald Finneran was ordered to pay nearly $50,000 to cover ticket and cleanup costs:

Unruly Air Passenger Gets Fine, ProbationMay 15, 1996
By Gary Borg.NEW YORK — An investment banker was fined $5,000 and placed on probation for two years Tuesday for a drunken scene aboard an airliner in which he was accused of defecating on a food service cart.

Gerard Buckley Finneran, 59, of Greenwich, Conn., also was ordered to get counseling and not drink on airplanes. He previously agreed to pay $48,000 to reimburse his fellow passengers' ticket costs, perform 300 hours of community service and cover United Airlines' $1,000 cleanup cost.

He was angered when flight attendants refused to serve him more wine on a Buenos Aires-to-New York flight Oct. 20.

Finneran's lawyer said his client is still in United's frequent flyer program.

Mr. Finneran took a dump on the first class meal service cart and things went downhill from there according to the criminal complaint:

No excuse, but it would be interesting to know all the mitigating circumstances, if any.

We all know cases of air rage are increasing: closely correlated with increased security clearance times, ever-reducing seat sizes, lack of meaningful customer service etc etc etc. There are two sides to every coin. Keep pushing down on standards and you will inevitably get blow-back.

Still, defecating on a food service cart takes some beating. That's one image that will take time to forget.

Given the dude was in First Class, I doubt these causes are particularly relevant. More likely they refused to serve him additional alcohol since he was already drunk on his ass and that made him mad.
