Good, it should be a worldwide precedent, the sooner this becomes the norm the better, what it needs now is publishing in all the newspapers to let these scroats know that actions have consequences.

Actually, that article says $9,118 also. It may be a case of all the news services picking up the same (erroneous) story, but most links I can find agree on the lower number.

This restitution stuff for drunk pax has been going on in the U.S. for decades without much visible effect from what I see. After an infamous incident on United in 1995, Air Force Academy graduate Gerald Finneran was ordered to pay nearly $50,000 to cover ticket and cleanup costs:

No excuse, but it would be interesting to know all the mitigating circumstances, if any.

We all know cases of air rage are increasing: closely correlated with increased security clearance times, ever-reducing seat sizes, lack of meaningful customer service etc etc etc. There are two sides to every coin. Keep pushing down on standards and you will inevitably get blow-back.

Still, defecating on a food service cart takes some beating. That's one image that will take time to forget.

Given the dude was in First Class, I doubt these causes are particularly relevant. More likely they refused to serve him additional alcohol since he was already drunk on his ass and that made him mad.
