Hello everybody,
I work as an ATC and I have a quick question about the racetrack ILS approach that I have attached to this message.

The outbound leg published on the chart starts after the right turn from SIB NDB on heading 087 where the aircraft also descends from 6000 to 3400 feet before the procedural turn. This means that an aircraft coming from the offset sector has to reach SIB NDB, enter the racetrack, return to SIB and only after this start its descent from 6000 to 3400 before turning final.

I was wondering if instead it's possible to descend to 3400 feet directly from SIB on an offset racetrack entry. So basically when reaching the NDB for the first time from sector 2(offset), proceeding with the teardrop/offset entry, descending to 3400 feet and turning base and final after reaching 3400.

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Hello Radu,

A racetrack of this type can be entered just as a regular holding pattern.
For example,if your inbound to the ndb allows you a teardrop entry then ok,time 1 min or 1.30 on the teardrop track then parallel the outbound(087) for the remaining time.
Minimum alt in the racetrack is 3400 feet so you may descend when overhead the ndb.

Thank you for your answer de_facto but I was wondering if you can turn base and land directly after the teardrop entry without doing the entire racetrack again. So 1.30min after the NDB then the remaining time outbound then base turn and land.

Yes you can and should, if not then the aircraft would need to ask for another racetrack circuit

Thank you for the replies guys. I was wondering if there is a document where this is stated specifically or if this is actually common piloting know-how.
