PPRuNe have kindly given their full permission to post the following;

WANTED - Commercial Pilots to attend Emergency Training for Air Traffic Controllers

ATCOs at London Control Centre (Area & Terminal Control) Swanwick, are required to undertake emergency training each year to maintain their licences. This training is split between ABES (ABnormal & Emergency Situations, formerly TRUCE) & STAC (Scenario Training for Aircrew & Controllers).

ABES occurs in the afternoon & involves both classroom & practical simulator sessions; theses sessions are greatly enhanced by the presence of a Commercial Pilot. There will be an opportunity to visit the Ops room at Swanwick prior to the session.

STAC is a facilitated classroom session for Pilots & ATCOs. It is solely classroom based & uses some radar replays to enhance discussions. Discussions include how emergencies effect operations on the flight deck & in the Control Room. A greater understanding of each others requirements in these circumstances can lead to better handling of these events. The day usually concludes with Pilots visiting the Ops rooms.

We are able to offer sensible travel expenses and lunch will normally be provided.

Below are the dates of the ABES and STAC (in large bold red) sessions where we have availability for Pilots to attend;

I would be available for any of the dates in September or November. I note sensible travel expenses would be covered so Premium Economy would be acceptable.

Hello,

Any face to face contact with ATC and the flight deck is always invaluable for both groups to better understand how the other works.

It would be interesting to know how many commercial pilots you need on each Red Day and a little more depth as to the activities on the day. Would be interesting to attend, currently EK. First come first served OR are you collating the responses and chosing from the various drivers that have offered?

If I was in the south of England, I wouldnt hesitate for this type of event. I did a similar excercise up north a few years ago. Interesting.

We require between 6-8 Commercial pilots for the STAC days & these slots are filled on a first-come-first-served basis.

First-come-first-served basis is also applied to ABES (formerly TRUCE) where ideally we're looking for 2-3 pilots. ABES is able to run without Commercial pilots, but the attendance/input of pilots greatly enhances the course. Unfortunately Approx. 50% of ABES run without a pilot.

The topics discussed in STAC 2016/17 are yet to be finalised, but there's always time for any questions that pilots wish to ask.

I have done this day course and it is great. Pilots and controllers get together and learn from each other. A really good safety tool.

I've attended a couple of TRUCE events and one STAC. Definitely the best non-sim/flying 'training' I've taken part in to date. Thoroughly recommended!
