A quick query - is anyone in the UK actually conducting EIR training? Even though an ATO may have the approval to do so, have any customers actually rolled up at the door to take the course?

We have the approval and so far no takers.

Have you even had any enquiries? I wonder whether the lack of interest is from the lack of general publicity - or whether people simply don't think that the rating has any worthwhile use.

We have had a couple of inquiries but when they work out the numbers and its rather severe limitation of no IAPs they opt to do a full IR.

We tried linking it to the IMCr but as most of our students are not UK based that fell flat as well.

Do you think that the examination requirement is still the stumbling block for people?

I have had many a conversation with people regarding the EIR and CBIR and the main feedback that i got was that it is the examination requirement that is putting 99.9% of them off.

Is the exam for EIR & CBIR still full of irrelevant nonsense as with the ATPL's?

Thats my own personal opinion of course.

We have no problem with people doing the IR theory. It's not difficult just requires a bit of commitment. It's not had ATPL stuff in it for a long time, that's just a myth by those looking for an excuse!!

We do the theory internally in Spain and the written is taken next door at the CAA exam centre.

Certainly the level of Theoretical Knowledge required for the CbM IR or EIR (it's the same for both) is considered to be a significant deterrent.

FCL.800 reduced it "By as much as we thought we could get away with" (as it was described to me by one of that working group). Which was by about 40%.

However, the EASA group members with whom I'm working all consider that a review and reduction in the Theoretical Knowledge, perhaps to a level parallel with that required for the FAA Private IR, is very necessary.

Frankly it doesn't surprise me that the EIR hasn't had many takers, but we need to see whether that will change if the level of mandatory theoretical knowledge is reduced.
