hello fellow aviators,

i hold a JAR Examiner Lizence for CRJ200/ Challenger850

here´s my question:

do I need a UK CAA approval to take an OPC from a JAR licenced pilot flying on an UK AOC?

if yes - can anyone describe how to obtain an approval - or better explain the checking requirements of the UK CAA.

I suggest you need to talk to the CAA Flight Ops department. You don't say which State issued your examiner authorisation but if its not the UK, then you need CAA authority to exercise the privileges in the UK. For an AOC holder then you will need to talk to the CAA Flight Ops Inspector appointed to that company.

A JAA Examiner may examine in any JAA State, but usually the candidate's home CAA will want a copy of the examiner's examiner authority (Odd, 'cos I thought we were all on the JAA database....) in order to issue, renew or revalidate a rating. The examiner can only sign for renewal/revalidations of ratings in a licence of his own home State.
As regards Commercial Air Transport, there is no reason why a TRE from one State should not be appointed to an AOC company of another state, but as Whopity says, the appointment must be acceptable to, and ratified by, the latter State's Flight Operations Inspectorate.

Nope. An examiner can sign the renewal/revalidation's of any member state with the prior permission of the appropriate state CAA's. We employ pilots from half a dozen JAA member states and I carry out the LST/LPC on all of them. Also due to the unique types that we operate I am continuously out in Europe doing LPC's on non UK licence holders.

True: no such thing as JAA anymore, but there used to be a database, AFAIK.

Nope! There has never been a JAA database. Each NAA keeps its own records and these are not shared between them. In the UK the data protection act prevents this. Other NAA's have similar restrictions.

I wish everyone would read the question!! This is the instructor / examiner forunm isn't it????? ;)

The only requirement to complete an OPC is to be acceptable to the AOC holder i.e. the company who have sent you the pilot for check.

You need to talk to the company. They should have something in their ops manual / part D. However, in general provided that you are a JAA TRE then it should be no problem.

-------

When it comes to LPC then countries vary in what is required. In the majority (if not all) of JAA cases it is possible to do the LPC.

The difference comes in the admin aspects. Some countries permit you as the examiner to sign the licence fro another 12 months provided that the rating that is being renewed is still valid. Other countries require that only the appropriate authority can sign the licence and this is always the case in my experience when the rating has expired.

The authorities require the full original LPC form and copy of both the training organisation's approval, the sim approval and of course your examiner approval.

This is usually sent from your training organisation to the airline / operator / aoc holder and then they pass it on to the appropriate authority.

You should find that most operators have a training manager / department who can help you and (since it costs a lot of money) will have covered all aspects and checked everything before sending you the candidates.

Of course there are a few exceptions to the rules!!

Yes you do, especially in the UK!
It is NOT simply enough to be acceptable to the operator if it is a UK operator.

Typically you need to notify the CAA who is your sponsor for this - normally the Company.
Then, you need to do a CRMI course with an approved training facility (cost vary), then do a TRE standardization course e.g. at FSI in EGLF (about 3000GBP) and then you have to do a checkride with somebody, which is supervised by a inspector of CAA trainingstandards. (His cost about 1000GBP in addition to the plane or sim + to get him there....)
After all this, the CAA will issue you a certificate and the Company can list you in their OM-D as TRI/TRE to do OPC's

(for just a LPC you don't need to do the above)
