Just curious - is this normal, especially for one of Aust's main airports:

No, it's not normal - presumably a staff shortage. Normal services have resumed:

Doesn't auger well for staffing Broome and Karattha Towers :confused:

I wonder what they are. "CTAF procedures apply" would have been more appropriate. AsA should have created a remote AFIS from Karratha.
