Hello,

Does anyone know if a restricted FI can teach student (SEP) for the issue of a MPL licence ?

How about a non restricted FI with CPL restriction.

The first 70 hours of a MPL Course are conducted in a SE aeroplane at a Integrated FTO together with the standard ATPL theoretical training. How will the first 45 hours differ from the first 45 hours of an Integrated ATPL Course? In the absence of any different syllabus they cannot and JAR-FCL allows a FI(R) to conduct such training.

The requirement to instruct for the basic part of the MPL quoted in EASA-FCL is:
FCL.925
(1) have successfully completed an MPL instructor course at an approved training organisation; and
(2) additionally for the basic, intermediate and advanced phases of the MPL integrated training course:
(i) be experienced in mulit-pilot operations; and
(ii)have completed initial crew resource management training with a commercial air transport operator
Prior to the Basic Phase is the Core Phase
The flying training shall comprise a total of at least 240 hours, composed of hours as pilot flying and pilot not flying, in actual and simulated flight, and covering the following 4 phases of training:
(a) Phase 1 Core flying skills.Specific basic single pilot training in an aeroplane.
(b) Phase 2 Basic.
Introduction of multicrew
operations and instrument flight.
(c) Phase 3 Intermediate.
Application of multicrew
operations to a multiengine
turbine aeroplane certified as a high
performance aeroplane in accordance with Part21
.
(d) Phase 4 Advanced.
Type rating training within an airline oriented environment.

That just about writes off all SE instructors except for the Core Phase but is not accepted yet!

Whoppity, it was my understanding that the MPL is conducted entirely in a simulator as opposed to a normal integrated course where it is done in an aircraft at the start. Certainly the reviews of the first ones run out in Scandinavia seemed to be all simulator. One of the things that registered most on my radar was that you could have first officers who have never actually flown a real aircraft.

I do stand to be corrected if you know different?

One of the major problems with the MPL was that the course was produced with no syllabus, consequently some of the first courses were non standard. The Core course is supposed to be 70 hours in a SE aeroplane so the holder should at least qualify for a PPL before moving to the basic stage in a FNPTII.

Yo can see why many of the existing FTOs have no interest in it.

It'll depend a little on the FTO, but a sample course is 90 hours Core training, to include 5 hours MEP (experience asymmetry), 5 hours FNPT2, 5 hours upset training in something aerobatic, and the remaining 75 hours in a complex single. Then into a jet sim for 100+ hours, then type rating training. First 45 hours or so as per a normal PPL syllabus, including 10+ hours solo. I don't especially agree with the concept, but I suppose it does to a certain extent match the military route of type/role specific training from a fairly early point.

Its worth noting that the EASA-FCL proposal was for 500 hours total time inc 200 hours instructional experience to teach on the core phase of a MPL course;however that is just a proposal!

Yes, restricted Fi's can teach on MPL. Restriction only means such instructors cannot send students for solo or instruct instrument flight lessons.

Yes, restricted Fi's can teach on MPL.But only in the Core Flying Skills Phase and provided that they have completed 500 hours flight time including 200 hours flight instruction [JAR-FCL 1.330(g)(2)] and have successfully completed an approved MPL(A) Instructors Training Course [JAR-FCL 1.310(d)(1)(iii)]

The references quoted are in AL7 to JAR-FCL 1 which were implemented by AIC 104/2007 (http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/aip/current/aic/EG_Circ_2007_W_104_en.pdf) as AL7 is not the currently accepted UK Version
