I see on the Air Niugini thread:

Retired Captain Peter Sharpe sadly passed away 13.9.09

If true, Sharpie will be sadly missed by all who knew and worked with him during his life in Papua New Guinea, his sailing and those who knew him through his contribution to PPRuNe and this thread in particular.

Condolences to his wife and brother Doug.

It is indeed a sad day.

Haere ra Sharpie

Agree with sundaun
Always concerned for the welfare of others.
He got me up to Hagen for my first job with TAL
God knows how many hundreds of others he helped in one way or another.

Captain Peter Sharpe RIP.
I had the pleasure of working with Peter at Pixie in the early 1980's, not to mention a bit of throat oil at various venues around Port Moresby with him.
A true gentleman and will be sadly missed.

Part of an email message from Subic Bay.....

Gentlemen,

Since I have written to you once before, in July, about Peter’s alleged trip to London, I have your email addresses, so I thought I should use them to pass on the very sad news that our good friend Peter died yesterday morning at 5 am in Subic Bay. He had been in and out of hospital with some minor complaints and a few tests, but sounded well on Saturday and was planning to come down to the Yacht Club on Sunday. However he didn’t make it.

I can’t tell you much more at the moment, but when I have more details I will pass them on. It seems that he may be moved to Manila on Tuesday.

I apologise if you already know, but thought it decent to write in case you had not been told.

He was a good mate and the very core of our sailing racing here in Subic Bay. He got four of us on the water about 5 years ago and we became the “Subic SAGS” (Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen’s Sailing). Currently races in Subic are now attended by many boats from Manila and we regularly have a dozen boats on the water. Not sure how we are going to do it without him, because he put so much time and competence into it! He will be sorely missed for any number of reasons.

I’ll keep in touch in the next day or so.

Sharpie was a relentless fighter for the conditions and pays structure of all Air Niugini Pilots!
He was highly respected by the entire pilot group for his skills flying in PNG and preparedness to help out fellow Pilots.
A shame he never got to live a long and full life in his country of retirement.

Hi Pauline

Thanks for confirmation of your Dad's sad passing.

PPRuNe Moderators know many of our registered members, although the members may not know us as Moderators. Some Moderators of this forum knew Peter, in my case for the past forty years. I also visited him at his retirement home in Subic a few years ago.

User profiles can only be seen by Moderators and in Sharpies case, I would like to post his PPRuNe profile details for the benefit of those who only knew him from his PPRuNe posts.

Sharpie registered as a PPRuNe User on 1 June 2001 and over the past eight years, made 442 posts. His last post was #2189 in this thread, on 23rd August 2009, 21:07, although his last visit 11th September 2009, 14:10.

His Licence type is ATPL, current type F28, interests "Yachting. PNG Aviation History" and occupation "Retired air pilot".

Those that knew him thought he'd been around forever, however his biography line states: "Born year of the Rat 1936 and live up to it!"

Indeed Sharpie! So true! :ok:

His location is given as: "Club Morocco. Subic Bay. Philippines". I know his home, on the hill overlooking his beloved yacht club, where I was fortunate to share more than a few San Migs with him.

I like to think Sharpie has arrived and is now enjoying a few coldies with many of his past friends and colleagues, Larry Blackman, Bryan Grey, Vince Sanders and so many others - or knowing Sharpie, again "The Angry Ant" aguing the merits of the PNG pilots strike with Junior and Bikkies! :}

His passing is a loss to all who knew him and to our PPRuNe community.

Pauline, our thoughts are with you and Peter's family in this time of loss.

Thank you for the heads up on the site protocol. I just wanted to make you all aware that Dad had passed away as I am sure he influenced many lives to the extent he did mine.

I must say, I find it enriching to communicate with those who knew Dad as he was my Mentor and I am very sure I would not have achieved the special things I have in my life so far = competing at the World Duathlon Championships for NZ, becoming one of the top dressage riders in NZ, becoming a Finance Director of one of the largest advertising companies in Australasia - none of this would have been achievable without the guidance of "Sharpie". He taught me to never give up, when someone said it couldn't be done, meant it could ... I could keep going with underlining his qualitites. I know he will be missed by many. I know for sure when you die there is only one thing you take with you - the love. Dad love you heaps and will think of you every day

Your Dad had a great sense of humour and I know he would appreciate my comment that if you have achieved:
"...the special things I have in my life so far = competing at the World Duathlon Championships for NZ, becoming one of the top dressage riders in NZ, becoming a Finance Director of one of the largest advertising companies in Australasia..."
You are blessed with your Mum's genes! The thought of Sharpie astride a horse defies even the greatest imagination.

But indeed, it appears you inherited your Dad's fight and determination! :ok:

I worked with Sharpie for 13 years and his memory will always bring a smile.

A big champion for what he thought was right and a dogged determination that would frustrate all.

Passionate about all things Flying, PNG, Sailing and his Mates. He had a love hate (big love small hate) relationship with ANG which we were all entitled too but worked tirelessly for ANG's welfare and prosperity.
If he thought something wasn't right he spoke up BIG time, if no one would listen he would put his own time and money on the line to right the wrong.

He would not stand back and listen when PNG was criticised particularly by those who knew little of the country.

PNG and ANG have lost one of the truly few characters that made working there such a wonderful experience.

Quite a few beers should be raised for having had the opportunity to know and work with Sharpie.

I will make sure it's an SP for having known the red faced little bull terrier.

Sharpie gone without a fight ? Impossible.
The Grim Reaper must surely have snuck up on him without warning.

As a young ATC in PNG Peter was never slow in "chipping" me for any perceived error in my procedures and he was usually right :( Many an enjoyable hour was spent at the Derro and the Yachtie discussing the error of my ways and how I should have done it.

You will be sorely missed Pete!
May your God provide you with an endless supply of "coldies" and a stiff breeze.

Sad to hear of Sharpies departure, he was a good friend, fellow aviator and never passed up a chance to share a cold SP.

It seems appropriate that I should be posting a last farewell to Sharpie on PNG Independence day, Sept 16, 2009, as the PNG aviation community and especially the PNG National Pilots have a lot to thank Sharpie for. He was a true wantok.

Peter was quite instrumental in getting National Pilots on to a cadet scheme in the very early narrow minded days of PX. The fruits of his work are now flying wide body jets at home and abroad in some of the worlds most successful airlines. He made it possible for some of us have a go at aviation, much appreciated. :ok:

Bamahuta Sharpie, rest well and thanks for all your support and efforts. Look forward to sharing a cold SP with you again one day.

Goodbye Sharpie,One time neighbor, sailing mate and drinking partner at the yachtie.I always remember his usual greeting when I met him at the club which was -Gyday ya big cu_t as he looked up a half metre or so standing toe to toe.He was a backer to the national pilots and I always considered him a guy who threw himself into tasks where he thought he could make a difference.VB

Hi Pauline,
My sincere condolences to the family.
I probably have been in touch with your dad more in recent times than most members on this forum.
A great man indeed. RIP
Asia is great for retirement but it can also be dangerous.
I have just got the shocking news from your half sister, copy of email attached below.
Sir,

This is Lanie Sharpe. I was able to open my father's email for some reason. I would like to inform you that he passed away last September 13 of cardiac arrest.
Should you wish to speak to Tita you can reach her thru her mobile 639189282977.
He will be buried on Sunday at Loyola Memorial Park Marikina.

Respectfully yours,
Lanie Sharpe

This is a huge surprise and even greater shock to me. Sharpie was one of the first people I met in PNG, way back in 1984. So, yet another old PNG hand has taken the stairway to Heaven - gone but certainly not forgotten by all of his many friends and acquaintences.

Bamahuta ol' mate - rest in the peace that you most richly deserve.

I am organising the farewell sailing race and send off for Peter Sharpe in Subic Bay in the Philippines. To our great surprise and sadness he died on Sunday after some brief illnesses that seemed to be of no great threat to his life. In the last 6 years or so he enthusiastically set up our racing club in Subic Bay which he ran with great patience and competence.

We will celebrate his life and his part in ours, on Saturday 18th by holding the races he planned and then toasting him on his way. His funeral will be in Manila on Sunday 19th.

I would be interested to receive any information about Peter which would help me put together an obituary that would honour him appropriately.

Thanks

I went digging in the PPRuNe archives, looked behind the bar etc to see what I could find about the Life of Sharpie.

Came up with at least one highlight of the little man's career HERE (http://www.pprune.org/dg-p-general-aviation-questions/173050-talair-reunion-mayhem-aftermath.html).

Photos of that momentuous event at which Sharpie was the MC HERE (http://s5.photobucket.com/albums/y154/Talair/).

Found a photo! "Biggles" Sinclair and Sharpie! :ok:

I miss old Sharpie chipping in and correcting me with a swift email :(
So here goes with a Sharpie tale and if I get it wrong and get an email from the old bugger I'll let you all know :ooh:

In the early 70's Sharpie somehow got a start with Air new Zealand on the DC8
During the course, there was a little drinky poos knees up with the chaps (cheps?)

During a conversation with Sharpie, an ex RNZAF Rodney knobs brays to Sharpie
"I say old chep, I cant recall what squadron you where on?"

Sharpie replied
" I wasnt on any bloody squadron sonny, I was chucking chook **** out of the hole in the bottom of a Fletcher, while you where still ****ting your pants"

Needless to say he never successfully completed the course and much to everyones gain, returned to TPNG
