Car bomb explodes in Madrid

A VEHICLE has exploded in a car park at Madrid-Barajas airport after police received a telephoned warning from a caller saying
he represented the Basque separatist group ETA.

An interior ministry spokesman said up to 60 vehicles in the second floor of the airport's Terminal 2 building, reserved for internal flights, were damaged in the blast which also started a fire. No one was injured.

The telephone caller had alerted highway police in San Sebastian, northern Spain, to the presence of the Madrid-registered booby-trapped vehicle.

Bomb-disposal experts were getting ready to disarm the vehicle when it exploded. Early police reports said the experts had triggered the blast.

No flights were cancelled but many passengers had to abandon their vehicles and carry their own luggage to reach airport terminals.

Last week, police announced they had arrested six suspected ETA members and seized 440 pounds of explosives in the Catalonia region, target of a bombing campaign against key
tourist sites.
