Hi,
As a PPL is it possible ever to visit a working ATC centre - preferably near London / SE - to find out more about how it all works?

Well - the club where I fly managed to arrange a group visit to Air Traffic at Brize Norton. The guys at Brize made us extremely welcome and were more than happy to show us round and spend time explaining how they operate. This was a couple of days before Fairford, so they were fairly busy at the time.

What I found most enlightening (and as a new PPL reassuring) was their attitude to GA. They were very much of the view that they're more than willing to help us where their workload permits. They also stressed that we can help ourselves by engaging brain before hitting the PTT, speaking clearly, succinctly, and being clear about our request and intentions. Basic stuff really.

My attitude to controllers changed significantly after this visit.

I am afraid you may find the attitude to PPLs from Brize radar has taken a turn for the worse... they are starting to cut down on the service they used to provide to certain flights :(

Give Farnborough radar a call, they are always helpful with visits. I used to take my students there.

KembleKid,

I'm very glad we made you feel welcome and changed your opinion of ATCOs!! I know some of us can be a bit grumpy over the RT at times!
I think it was myself being your host for that one so I'm happy it was of some use.

If indeed it was you, then a belated 'thank you' for a very useful session.

I've requested a couple of transits through Brize Zone recently - granted on both occasions with a very professional and courteous service.

NATS have been quite active in recent months with ATCOs making visits to flying clubs, particularly around the London TMA, giving presentations and briefings on airspace issues and associated problems. The idea being that by giving such briefings we can hopefully cut down on the number of zone infringements and the ultimate disruption/mayhem that ensues. Farnborough have recently taken the well publicised step of extending LARS service around the London TMA. Whilst providing a valuable service to GA traffic, it also assists in preventing such zone infringements.

Most NATS units are more than happy to arrange such visits (although some are limited/not possible due to security issues, being airside). Approaches for visits are usually welcomed and best if made by a group, directly to the unit concerned.
