I should ask everyone that flies in UK airspace to go and look at this thread in "ATC Issues", started and continued by those that actually DO the controlling.

Thanks for doing that Sick Squid :) :) :)

And also I post this so it stays at the top of the Rumours and News column. To my mind, it is VERY important that pilots that fly regularly in the UK know what's going on.

Thanks.

Fed Up etc, I think the main news item here that is worth highlighting from both a pilot and public transport position is the possible ATC mainframe outage on August 10th this year. This is not to lower your overall safety concerns about the system, training and replacement, but the first tangible effect I can foresee.

Having been caught up in both of the last two outages at LATCC (2000)the ensuing chaos was worse than I could have expected. Are we to believe that we will be down to one aircraft per 5 minutes again for that evening? The hangover afterwards lasts for almost another 24 hours as all the delays are absorbed. No fun for anyone who has to commit aviation in that event, pilot, passenger, ground staff, ATCO et al.

Think I'll bid for that day off and sit in the garden watching the Ockham hold!

Thanks again Sick !

I can understand, from your viewpoint, that the main problem is the computer outage for that evening. But take a second or two, and think about the wider issue running in this thread. Operational controllers NOT accepting the training they are being given for the new system ? Bodes well for the future, what what ? http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/eek.gif http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/eek.gif

Anyway, I'm not sure how the outage will affect the running of the operation. But a good idea, take the evening off !
