View Full Version : Would you buy a Cessna Twin?

I am thinking about a T310R, but am a little concerned about the aparently forthcoming AD on Cessna wing spars. It currenlty only applies to certain 400 series Cessnas, but rumour has it that it may well spread to all Cessna twins. With an estimated fix cost of $70000...yes thats right 430+ man hours, it is more than many of them are worth.

What will this do to the used Cessna twin market, and should I look at an alternative?

Anyone 'in the know' out there care to comment?

Read Geoffrey Boot's article in the current edition of Flyer about the Aztec. I love mine to bits.

I too like my Aztec, but the more important consideration must be can you afford to take such a huge financial gamble, and without being impudent, I would think only a serious gambler would be even slightly tempted.

But.....you've gotta admit.........

If the 310 were a girl it'd be Cat Deeley.

If the Aztec were a girl it'd be Dawn French

You are so shallow. Beauty is skin deep. The ability to work and serve reliably, and provide comfort and safety, must be more important!

So, Timothy... which aircraft would you compare to Moira Stewart?

Rearranging the letters of Moira Stewart gives 'A tart? I'm worse!'!

I would look at the Cessna 340, but I would wait until this spar thing is confirmed, there will be lots for sale at give away prices,

I am a bit fed up with the PA27, and there won't be much difference in running costs.

Thanks for the comments....I dont recall anywhere in my question asking whether the Aztec is a better aircraft....uglier...certainly.
It, probably, is the at the bottom of my short-list

Look at the Cessna 303 as it is unlikely to be affected by the spar mod.

The 303 is also good out of 600 M of grass if you need to, not that fast though.

Why do you want a twin anyway??

OK. Less subtly. The 310 is a lovely looking aircraft. It performs well, in terms of speed and range, on it's power.

However:
There is the spar problem hanging over its head
It's engines are said to be prone to cracked cylinders and even crankcases
It's load bearing and passenger cabin are rather limited
There have been a number of fatal crashes in the last couple of years
It requires careful handling after an engine failure especially at low speed
But it looks nice.

I've quite a few hours in the C402 and C310 (R and Q variants). I preferred the 402 to the 310 but I preferred both of those to the PA31 and PA34s that I also used to fly

Not that I am in the market but currently there is no way that I would contemplate buying any of the 400 series. I would only consider a 310 IF it was such a steal that I could afford to walk away from it IF the spar AD permeates down to the 300 series.

Shame really but most 310s/4xx must be at least 30 odd yrs old!
