Peter Barron
11th May 2004, 13:44
Are you a post WW2 Jet

treadigraph
11th May 2004, 13:49
Noooooooooooooooo...

Think much smaller...

Oh, quick rethink on the clue... My First SOUNDS like a common association...

Saab Dastard
11th May 2004, 14:02
Civil or military?

treadigraph
11th May 2004, 14:03
Civil..................................

Bre901
11th May 2004, 14:13
EU?

Saab Dastard
11th May 2004, 14:21
TO clarify, does the answer no to the question:

Are you a post WW2 Jet

mean not a jet and not post WWII?

treadigraph
11th May 2004, 14:24
Sorry, I am post-WWII, but not a jet.

I am from the EU...

Saab Dastard
11th May 2004, 14:28
Pegasus Chaser Microlight?

treadigraph
11th May 2004, 14:51
I like your thinking, but no - I'm talking after last orders...

Also, a little heavier...

Saab Dastard
11th May 2004, 15:11
Are you French?

Fixed wing or rotary?

treadigraph
11th May 2004, 15:26
French and fixed wing... Getting warm!

Peter Barron
11th May 2004, 15:41
Cap as in nightcap

treadigraph
11th May 2004, 15:50
Another good guess, but not right I'm afraid...

Bre901
11th May 2004, 15:51
Are you single-engine ?

treadigraph
11th May 2004, 16:01
Yes, just the one...

Peter Barron
11th May 2004, 16:05
Are you a Rallye Club.

You go on to a club after last orders at a pub, or have I lost the plot here............................

treadigraph
11th May 2004, 16:08
No...

OK, another clue: I am homebuilt (but I might also have seen limited series production?) but my first name sounds like I was built outside. My second is a mode of transport...

Gotta go now, will try to check in briefly around 7pm, thereafter when I get back from the pub (but I'll be using Shanks' Pony!)

Bre901
11th May 2004, 16:12
Gardan GY-20 Minicab then ?

treadigraph
11th May 2004, 16:15
Yaaaayyyy!

Well done Bre901, your go, mon ami!

Whoops, really must go now afore the traffic gets bad.

Bre901
11th May 2004, 16:31
Merci Monsieur treadigraph :ok:

My brother and myself are very single-minded.

Peter Barron
11th May 2004, 16:44
Does single refer to one engine

Saab Dastard
11th May 2004, 17:08
Are you an engine?

Bre901
11th May 2004, 19:22
We are both airplanes.
Single has nothing to do with an engine count

London Jets
11th May 2004, 19:27
are you and your brother close in age?

are you jets?

post WWII?

Bre901
11th May 2004, 20:14
if we were humans, he could be my father
no jets
post WWII

Archimedes
12th May 2004, 01:24
Are you military?

Bre901
12th May 2004, 06:24
Nope, although I may be mil-registered in some countries.

Peter Barron
12th May 2004, 07:41
Morning Bre901.

Are you British

Tim Inder
12th May 2004, 08:40
'morning.

Does 'Single minded' refer to single crew?

Bre901
12th May 2004, 08:42
Morning all
Peter
No, I'm not British
Tim
No, not single crew

Peter Barron
12th May 2004, 09:02
Does single minded refer to both these aircraft doing the same job.

American ?

Bre901
12th May 2004, 09:09
Peter

Same job : yes
Not from the USofA

London Jets
12th May 2004, 09:43
are you russian?

Peter Barron
12th May 2004, 09:50
Does the job involve carrying passengers, are you an Airliner.

Bre901
12th May 2004, 10:42
Not Russian

No pax, no airliner

Peter Barron
12th May 2004, 11:35
Are you a cargo aircraft.

European.

Bre901
12th May 2004, 11:42
No
No

Peter Barron
12th May 2004, 12:24
Well, there is not much left that a civil aircraft can do if it does not carry passengers or cargo.

At the moment the only thing I can come up with is a Firebomber.

Are you a Canadair CL-415

Bre901
12th May 2004, 12:38
Your thinking is quite logical indeed, although I could also be a crop sprayer, or a banner/glider tug, or an aerobatic plane, or a geographical survey plane, and many many more ...

But yes, I am the Canadair CL-415. :ok:
I'll leave it to you to find out who my older brother is ;)

Over to you Monsieur le Baron. :ok: :ok:

Peter Barron
12th May 2004, 13:19
Thanks Bre901.

I got one right yipee :ok:

Here we go.

I came at the end , but I am number one.

Bre901
12th May 2004, 13:48
End of the propeller era, maybe ?

Peter Barron
12th May 2004, 14:07
I was made before the end of the propeller era

Silas Blattner
12th May 2004, 14:59
Piston ?
US ?
Military ?

Peter Barron
12th May 2004, 15:23
Piston - Oh yes.

US - No.

Military - Yes, the military flew it.

treadigraph
12th May 2004, 16:08
Possibly the DHC-1 Chipmunk...?

Peter Barron
12th May 2004, 16:26
Sorry treadigraph, not the Chipmunk.

Bre901
12th May 2004, 21:03
Are you a Brit ?

London Jets
12th May 2004, 21:25
are you named after a city?

are you single engined?

were you used in the reconnaissance role?

LowNSlow
13th May 2004, 06:02
Martin-Baker MB1 perchance?

Peter Barron
13th May 2004, 07:19
Morning Gentlemen.

Bre901 - No not British.

London Jets

Not named after a City.

Single Engine - yes, just the one.

Reconnaissance - No.

LowNSlow - Sorry thats not me.

I was the last of a line of different aircraft built for a specific role, even though I was never used in that role I would have been the best at it.

Bre901
13th May 2004, 08:55
Are you Italian ?

Peter Barron
13th May 2004, 09:24
Bre901.

Yes, I am Italian.

I think I gave away too much in the last clue.

Peter.

Bre901
13th May 2004, 10:25
Peter

I guess you are the Macchi MC72 then
World's fastest seaplane (piston) 709 km/h (440 mph)
Came a bit late for the Schneider Trophy (won by the Supermarine SB6B)

Peter Barron
13th May 2004, 11:04
Spot on Bre901.

I am the Macchi MC72

A tick VG and a very well done to you.

I was the last designed for the Schneider Trophy, never took part but I was the fastest propeller driven seaplane and have never been beaten, number one

:ok:

Over to you Bre901:ok:

Bre901
13th May 2004, 11:14
Thanks Peter
I think I gave away too much in the last clueYou gave out even more saying that ;)

There we go :

I'm not what you would call lowlife.

treadigraph
13th May 2004, 11:32
A high flyer then...

Jet?

Bre901
13th May 2004, 11:40
No

Peter Barron
13th May 2004, 12:12
Is no for jet or high flyer or both

Silas Blattner
13th May 2004, 13:45
Assuming we're into altitude record holders (ABTMOAF )

Bristol 138 ?

treadigraph
13th May 2004, 14:16
Grob Egrett? extra characters....

Bre901
13th May 2004, 15:30
That was a short one !

And the winner is

treadigraph :ok:
Pip, pip !

Peter
there was only one question, so only one answer.

silas Blattner
ABTMOAF = ??? :confused: :confused:

treadigraph
Over to you.

Peter Barron
14th May 2004, 07:21
A quick easy one while there is a pause.

Listen very carefully Jack, the big man does not talk very loud.

LowNSlow
14th May 2004, 10:49
Northrop B2 Spirit stealth bomber?

Peter Barron
14th May 2004, 11:03
LowNSlow.

Sorry, not the B2.

The clue is for a nickname of this Aircraft.

Peter.

Saab Dastard
14th May 2004, 11:12
Must be the Bristol Britannia, "Whispering Giant"

But what's Jack listening carefully got to do with it?

Peter Barron
14th May 2004, 11:36
Saab Dastard.

You got it, Britannia.

Clue explained.

Jack, as in Jack and the beanstalk who met the Giant ( the big man who was whispering), hence Whispering Giant.

Peter.

Saab Dastard
14th May 2004, 11:49
Thanks, Peter.

Now where is treadigraph when you need him?

Oh, well here's another quickie to fill the time ;)

I'm delighted I consumed this female.

Bre901
14th May 2004, 11:59
Yak-32 ?
it's the only Mantis I could find ...

Saab Dastard
14th May 2004, 12:09
Sorry, Bre, not a mantis - the female bites the male's head off during copulation, I believe, so it's the wrong way round. Otherwise full marks for ingenuity.

You'll hate me for this, btw :O

Peter Barron
14th May 2004, 12:17
Saab Dastard.

Very good,

Gladiator.

Am I right.

Peter

Saab Dastard
14th May 2004, 12:20
Spot, on Mr B :)

The old one's are the best, eh?

Since there's no sign of Tredders, you may as well go again.

Peter Barron
14th May 2004, 12:31
Saab Dastard.

Yup, that was a good un;)

My Motorcycle gloves come from a place West of Slough.

Peter.

Saab Dastard
14th May 2004, 12:38
Gloster Gauntlet?

Too obvious?

Peter Barron
14th May 2004, 12:50
That's the one.

I was trying to think of something quick

Saab Dastard
14th May 2004, 13:00
Well, try this one - I think (hope!) it's harder.

You can't strike in me if I'm rich and working.

ps - this is only the name of the Aircraft, not the manufacturer.

treadigraph
14th May 2004, 13:08
Sorry, I was enjoying lunch in the Dog and Bull...

Bit tricky...

Saab Dastard
14th May 2004, 13:18
Well, I guess you've missed your turn, hope lunch was worth it! ;)

You'll just have to get this one then to wrest control back again.

:D

Peter Barron
14th May 2004, 13:48
Lightning

Saab Dastard
14th May 2004, 13:50
Nope, not Lightning.

Bre901
14th May 2004, 15:16
Guess we'll have to go through the usual questions.

Are you a pax transport airplane ?

Saab Dastard
14th May 2004, 15:32
No, not a pax transport airplane

treadigraph
14th May 2004, 16:25
Helicopter? (Thought I'd try something different!)

Saab Dastard
14th May 2004, 16:59
Not one of those horrible noisy repellent rotary things, no ;)

(Although some sad NIMBYs see all aircraft as horrible, noisy, repellent things - poor, misguided souls  - but that's irrelevant)

Peter Barron
14th May 2004, 17:30
Are we a Jet Fighter or even just a Jet.

Saab Dastard
14th May 2004, 18:14
Not a jet fighter, nor even a jet

Bre901
14th May 2004, 19:12
Military ?
Pre-WWII ?

Saab Dastard
14th May 2004, 19:54
Military, Yes.

Not pre-WWII

Bre901
14th May 2004, 20:02
Brit ?
Bomber ?

Saab Dastard
14th May 2004, 20:25
Yes (and no!), Yes

Archimedes
15th May 2004, 01:53
In service in 1945?

(and not the Washington)?

Saab Dastard
15th May 2004, 09:03
Yes, it was in service in 1945, but not front-line service

LowNSlow
15th May 2004, 09:21
Are you a Bristol Beaufort (built in Oz and the UK)

Saab Dastard
15th May 2004, 10:31
No, not a Bristol Beaufort

Silas Blattner
15th May 2004, 11:29
Bolingbroke then?

Saab Dastard
15th May 2004, 12:24
Yaaay!!!

Over to you, Silas!

Hope the "bowling" without the W wasn't too offputting :O

Silas Blattner
15th May 2004, 13:20
OK - watch out - not for those who dislike esoteric. But every one will know it.

clue: "Mythological, I was one of four".

(you get extra fascination for all six !)

Saab Dastard
15th May 2004, 16:17
Auster?

Roman name for Notus, the South wind

The others are:

Boreas
North wind

Eurus
East wind

Zephyrus
West wind

These, plus 2 others are the 6 sons of Aeolus, keeper of winds.

He also had 6 daughters

Silas Blattner
15th May 2004, 17:47
Very creative answer but no. Though if you can give 6 aicraft each named after one of Aeolus's sons you can have it.

Saab Dastard
16th May 2004, 11:16
Does "one of four" mean that there were only 4 of this type of aeroplane built?

Silas Blattner
16th May 2004, 12:35
Well that's the crux of the biscuit.

I was the only one of these. The other four are all different types.
As is the sixth.

Bre901
16th May 2004, 20:34
Is that Mythology of yours Greek ?
Are you a Brit ?

Saab Dastard
16th May 2004, 21:14
Norse Mythology?

American?

Some other standard questions:

Civil or Military?

Jet or prop?

Post WWII?

Silas Blattner
16th May 2004, 21:25
Bre:

The mythology is Greek I guess in that the the first written account I've found is Herodatus out of Egyptian lore. Tho it could be Harry Potter for all I know.

But not a bit Brit.

Saab:

Not Norse (but quite a lot from the North)

All American

Civilian (but a bit military)

Prop

Post WW 11 ( but the sixth is definitely pre)

Saab Dastard
16th May 2004, 23:05
Are some or all of them made by Lockheed?

Silas Blattner
17th May 2004, 00:15
You're working hard, but I am not from Lockheed, neither are any of the others.

LowNSlow
17th May 2004, 05:26
Were you built in Scandahoovia (Sweden)?

Bre901
17th May 2004, 08:13
were you single engine ?

Silas Blattner
17th May 2004, 08:57
lNs: Not a bit Scandy

Bre: Yes

Bre901
17th May 2004, 09:15
STOL ?

Silas Blattner
17th May 2004, 09:22
Not STOL but unconventional in all events. BTW to your single question I'd add that a couple of the others weren't.

Bre901
17th May 2004, 09:37
Have to confess I'm a bit lost.
Were you a seaplane per chance ?

LowNSlow
17th May 2004, 09:41
Are you part of the Miles Libellula (sp?) family?

Silas Blattner
17th May 2004, 11:16
No Bre a landplane. I was supposed to have skids !.

Not Libellula LNS - not a bit Brit remember.

LowNSlow
17th May 2004, 13:05
Are you a member of the X-plane series?

Edited to say: Obviously not as one of them was pre war and the X-prog didn't start until 1946. Doh

Silas Blattner
17th May 2004, 16:26
No not part of the X programme as you said. Quite the opposite end of tech.

Apparently there is going to be, or already is, another version of me. That's gone quiet. I don't know what's got into it.

Saab Dastard
17th May 2004, 16:59
Human powered?

Like the Daedalus Project's Daedalus, Light Eagle, Daedalus 87 and 88 - or the Gossamer Condor/Albatross? That's 6, but there's a whole lot more working HPAs from outside the US. And I suppose there's Leonardo's design from the 15th century!

Silas Blattner
17th May 2004, 17:42
Again very creative, fitting closely to the clues - amazing - but not human powered.

My power actually came from one of the others which was a piston single, but supposedly came from another one of the four that's a piston twin.

Saab Dastard
17th May 2004, 18:37
Diesel powered?

Bre901
17th May 2004, 19:07
Motorglider ?

Silas Blattner
17th May 2004, 19:48
P/W R-1340. Conventional fuel. Supercharged radial, so not a motorglider.

Saab Dastard
17th May 2004, 21:48
Flight of the Phoenix?

Silas Blattner
17th May 2004, 23:28
Exactly. I was the Tallmantz/Timm Phoenix. (Variously composed) of Fairchild C-82/ Beech 18/ North American T-6/ North American Navion - parts. My stand in after the crash was the pre war North American 0-47.

A remake was being touted - with what equipment I don't know. But the humans were to be at least Dennis Quaid, Hugh Laurie and a ........... woman. Filming started near Walvis Bay, this time to impersonate Mongolia.

http://stripe.colorado.edu/~steinerd/Phoenix.html

You deserve your go now.

LowNSlow
18th May 2004, 04:30
Phew, well done Saab and Silas :ok: :ok: I think they are using a C-119 for the remake. There was a feature on it in Aeroplane / Flypast a while ago.

C'mon Saab start us off again. :ok: :ok:

Saab Dastard
18th May 2004, 10:13
Here's a quickie:

I'm a very willing appendage.

LowNSlow
18th May 2004, 13:56
Tell me you're not the Bell XP-55 Ascender Saab :\ :\ :uhoh:

Saab Dastard
18th May 2004, 14:23
No, LowandSlow I'm not.
:)

Saab Dastard
19th May 2004, 08:10
I'm not going to be able to pprune until later today (about 17.00 UTC), so again, feel free to leapfrog this one.

Cheers,

SD

Peter Barron
19th May 2004, 08:27

Nice try, but no I am not MIL Mi-6.

Peter.

LowNSlow
19th May 2004, 14:24
Ok, let's do the usual in an attempt to elicit info!

Are you fixed wing / piston powered?

Peter Barron
19th May 2004, 14:32
LowNSlow.

No to both.

Peter.

Saab Dastard
19th May 2004, 21:51
Is it a Chinook? :D

LowNSlow
20th May 2004, 03:45
Oh my Gawd Saab it has to be!!!

Peter Barron
20th May 2004, 07:11

Over to you SD :ok: .

Peter.

Saab Dastard
20th May 2004, 07:57
Consider yourself thoroughly groaned, sir!

I'm out again today, so nominate a deputy, if you would.

But I shall be back this evening and fully intend to exercise my right to make you all suffer :E

Cheers

Saab Dastard
20th May 2004, 20:15

Graf Zeppelin Lz127?

Dr Eckener, head of the Zeppelin programme between the wars, wasn't favoured by the Nazi - in fact he refused to join the party. A vengeful Goering later ordered the destrcution of the last remaining airships, ostensibly to provide aluminium for aircraft construction.

Did the Natter come straight down, given that it was in bits when the pilot returned to earth?

The Convair XFY-1 Pogo or Lockheed XFV-1 Salmon, perhaps, which did (in theory, if not in practice) go straight up and come straight back down?
