Is this fly-in for a specific type?

AerBabe

We want to meet him cos he's a lovely bloke. Yes, there's lovely, eh boyo? What type do you want to bring, TB?

Hi ToryBoy. A little history lesson now. Old LowNSlow works in khazakstan or somewhere like that, it is very far away. Everytime there is a fly-in, him being a popular bloke and all that and wanting to be there to see us all again, has managed to be working everytime.

This time, I suggested he give us a date for a fly-in and we work it out around that. So we have.

Fly-in open to anyone at all. You can fly-in in anything you like, obviously, the more unique the better. :)

Does that mean I can fly in on my pink winged "my little pony"

OH PLEASE , CAN I ,CAN I .

Having read LowNSlows pearls for the last year or so I feel duty bound to attend.

This I shall be doing in my Luscombe but I would rather make it Sandown than Kemble for two reasons.

1. Sandown has a proper runway surface.

2. I might as well cycle if it is to be Kemble.

NinjaBill
16th Mar 2004, 23:48
After passing my skills test on sunday, ill hopefull have my licence in time to attend, depending on the speed of the CAA.

Can I vote for sandown, cos its the furthest away,

LowNSlow
17th Mar 2004, 03:26
Kind words Aerbabe & BRL , I thank you. What was that charity you were collecting for???

monocock why don't you fly to another airfield and give somebody a lift? That way you justify the flying (like you need to, hah) plus you cheer up a potential ppruner. :ok: :ok:

Pinkster with 'my little pony' I can't wait ;) Does knobbygb know his nickname is 'my little pony'. :ooh: :ooh:

kingy are you going to bring the Ebay Airthrappler?

Toryboy that's what my kids usually say. We're not related are we :D :D

NinjaBill well it's Paddy's Day today and the fly-in will be in 8 weeks time. Mmmmm cutting it close!!!

This time, I suggested he give us a date for a fly-in and we work it out around that. So we have.
So- what IS the date, it does not seem to be on this thread and I have not seen another.

LowNSlow
17th Mar 2004, 06:20
Foxmoth well spotted that Ppruner ;)

I'll make a bold statement in a democratic manner and narrow it down on the 3rd or 4th July cos that'll be in the middle of my leave. No matter how much the muppet I work for screws around with it, I'll make that weekend.

Any strong feelings from people who would be prevented from aviating on this weekend?

Did I mention Paddy's Day earlier on. The one and only Irish pub in our part of Kazakhstan has run out of Guinness :{ :{ :{ B:mad:y moronic Jockanese manager :ouch: :ouch:

Congrats Thumper, you picked a good school to learn at.

Kellvin
18th Mar 2004, 18:35
With the exception of Kemble I don't have a clue where any of those places are!

And Kemble is on the other side of all those MATZ'es

Besides, you want exotic aircraft not cessna 172's:{

LowNSlow
19th Mar 2004, 03:34
All are welcome Kellvin there will be other 172's to keep yours company, probably a few PA-28's and 152's as well :ok:

MATZ's aren't a problem, just call them and ask for a MATZ penetration, usually you get let through unless there's traffic then you just have to orbit until the fast pointy thing is on the ground. Most don't work on weekends anyway.

Pinkster it'll be nice to see you there.

Orange AW but of course! Could be a bit of a trek from Northamptonshire to Sandown IoW (favourite at the moment) though.

BRL how long can we leave this as a sticky? I was thinking until maybe a week on Monday / 50 takers whichever comes first. Then I can try to persuade somebody to start a book-in thingy (AerBabe where are you) cos I can't due to our overenthusiastic net nanny.

Sh'e started a thread on which bathroom scales she should buy!:ouch:

BRL
26th Mar 2004, 13:39
So far we have 53 votes. The fly-in is a long day off yet so there may be more. This could turn out to be the biggest fly-in yet. Keep voting all..... :ok:

Genghis the Engineer
26th Mar 2004, 15:22
Speaking as co-owner of this new toy, and a friend of Aerbabe's, I don't think she has anything to worry about unless she has some particularly large friends.

Not wishing to advertise on Pprune but as an aid to anybody wishing to overnight in Sandown, the Specialist Flying School have decent accommodation and parking for your wunderplane. If you do a google on their name you'll get their website.

Is there anybody here who has connections at Sandown that could maybe get us a discount for a Pprune landing fee?

steve_moate
5th Apr 2004, 13:01
I go there usually one a fortnight for lunch (from Goodwood). I'll have a chat with the nice guys in the tower and see if they will be willing to do a deal. Landing fee currently £9. Bacon butties are worth the fee though :D I'll post there responce (assuming they give a publishable one)....

Monocock
5th Apr 2004, 15:24
We'd better get a few more Sandown votes coming in or it looks like we'll be off to the place where step ladders are required in the urinals.

I popped into Sandown on Friday afternoon (cos work was getting tedious) and I was given £1 change from £20 for a landing fee!

Fortunately the chap was understanding when I protested and paid up the rest!!

There was a PA38 having a few prob's with landing in the X-wind. Four missed approaches poor chap. It was about 12 kt and right across the runway. I left while he was still trying. Who knows, he might still be trying now......:ugh:

S-Works
5th Apr 2004, 15:32
They are very posh urinals though!!!!

Had lunch there yesterday (borrowed a step ladder for the pre-flight pee). The 45kt wind on approach certainly focused the mind.

Looking forward to Sandown.

steve_moate
8th Apr 2004, 15:18
Went to Kemble for lunch yesterday. Now I know what you are all talking about (urinals/step ladders). Apparently the plumber that fitted the toilet was 7' 4".

Landing fee not bad, considering it includes crew bus. Great facilities at AV8 though. Got an unscheduled display from an Extra whilst there too.

Parked the Mooney under the wing of a DC10 to keep the rain off.:D

Thumpango
9th Apr 2004, 18:26
Tried to book a PA38 to come along to Sandown on the 4th and would you believe it, the airfield is closed because it's a race day:{

Trying to negotiate a fly out late Saturday and back early Monday. If this is not possible looks like a PA28 from Southampton - BUT I will be there in something!

OK guys it seems that Haverfordwest needs a bit of promoting:

Inexpensive landing fees (no need to fund a crew bus!!!!)
Fuel always available
Good and inexpensive food
Choice of 6 runways, all tarmac
NDB/DME for those without GPS
No ATC delays
and some of the most scenic countryside in the UK

If you've never been you are missing out!

Evo
15th Apr 2004, 07:11
I have been, and I agree - Haverfordwest is very nice ... even if the Welsh weather has a habit of playing "hide the mountain"

I'd like to go back, so maybe there should be a fly-in later in the year...?

steve_moate
17th Apr 2004, 13:30
Went to Sandown for lunch again yesterday and spoke to Larry Evans, the airport manager. He is willing to do a deal regarding the reduced landing fee, but would need to know a reasonable estimate of numbers. I guess we have about 10 so far, but if we can get a commitment and supply an accurate figure, he is very willing to help us out.

Although it has not been advertised, Larry also informed me that Sunday 16th May will be a 'free' day. This applies only to the landing fee:D , but not the bacon butties:{ . Yesterdays butty was particularly good, better than my landing (strong crosswind)

Sandown also has a website (www.isleofwightairport.co.uk), and plans to build a large 'terminal' building with restaurant, bar and a good viewing area on the first floor.

LowNSlow
19th Apr 2004, 15:38
Before I can give the nice chap at Sandown an idea of the numbers involved I need to know myself. Anybody who's coming, please pop to Page 2 where AerBabe has kindly posted a link to the flyin organiser thingy which I've just added here (http://www.thehangar.co.uk/flyin/main.php?find=79) ;)

Sorry, Pinks, the beach is the other side of town. The airfield has lots of muddy grass, the awfully-named "Reach for the Pie" cafe and a seemingly guaranteed 90 degree crosswind that'll cause lots of jolly groundlooping fun. But it's nice. :)

I have just asked Steve Moate if he would have a word with Larry Evans(no relation) for us, I am sure has seen him about it before but just making sure.

BRL et al,

Are we now able to confirm that 12 A/C will be the final figure?

If so, I will have a word with Larry as per my last posting, and see what he is able/willing to do regarding the landing fee for us, based on that number.

Looking forward to meeting some/all of you on the day.

BRL

Hi Steve. At the moment there are 12 a/c on the list. There is plenty of time until the date so there could well be more on the list by the time the date comes around. It is impossible to say exactly how many, just a rough figure as people may drop out beforehand up until the day itself.
Thanks for having a word. :)

I've booked a CAP 10 from sherburn, and will be flying down to Sibson near cambridge, to meet FNG, and will be then getting a lift with him in a rather nice shiney black bulldog to Sandown
I havent yet worked out how long it will take, but B&$%ard ages is probably fairly close to the mark. Needless to say, ill only be atempting this if the weather looks fantastic.

See you all on the 4th

Hey Bill, I know you've said that the Sherburn Cap ain't got no DI, but if you go looking for Sibson near Cambridge our meeting may be long delayed. You can stonk down the A1 at 125 knots, but things will slow up a bit once in the wheezy old dog (pictured, with apologies for pop-ups)

Still have a seat spare, given that AB is arriving by self-propelled deckchair, and both the Photographic Gentlemen are on duty at Old Warden that day, so if anyone doesn't mind a noisy uncomfortable ride and wants to fly from Sywell or somewhere reasonable en route, let me know.

I'll try to get a land-away trial lesson, so at least say hello for half an hour. Otherwise, if I can get time off, is anyone interested in flying in from Bournemouth? I can get an aircraft at staff rates (about £100 per hour airborne in a 4-seater, so around £60-£80 the round trip plus landing fee if we fly directly there), so cost sharing should make a reasonable rate for the impoverished.

FNG - I'd still like to meet up with you somewhere around North London and get a lift from there if thats OK with you. I'm not too keen on trying to get round all that London Airspace.

Ill take the Cap from sherburn, to whereever you would like to meet up, assuming the nice man from the CAA can get my licence back in time, but it is 6 weeks away, so that shouldnt be a problem

PS AB - The G-info website says you are telling porky pies about the reg of your new toy. There is no G-FART registered

Very kind words Aerbabe. I've done some formation flying with GtE once, but didn't get very far away from him as I was in the back seat at the time...........

Bit bumpy on the way down, but nice and smooth once over the Solent.

Our go-faster 172 quite likes the grass and we have no such restrictions about what we can land it on (despite it still being quite new and shiny).

Landing fee 9 quid (I think somebody mentioned a special rate for the Fly-In?). Looking forward to returning on 4/7.

Just had a nice chat with Larry Evans and everything is fine. If the weather is nice then obviously it will be busy so please do keep on your toes approaching the island.

Also asked for a parking area where we could all park together and we could be allocated a parking spec if it is not too busy on the day. What you can do if you like is mention you are with the pprune fly-in when you make a call to them in the air or after landing. I will phone them on the day and tell them about it and Larry will leave a note if he is not there on Sunday so just ask if there is a parking area for us.

Once again if it is nice weather then it will be busy so please take care around the island. :)

P.S. Please try and enter your details on the fly-in page HERE. (http://www.thehangar.co.uk/flyin/main.php?find=79) If you have not done it please do it now. Ta. :)

I still MIGHT make it, but...

Today - driving for two hours each way to a helicopter school that might have regular work for me.
Friday - driving for even longer to fly a helicopter to write about it for one of the mags.
Saturday - instructing all day at the present helicopter school, which rarely gives me any work so I'm not turning this down.
In between - trying to finish a time-critical, long, and complicated report for the day job, which is supposed to be more or less full time, and which still pays for the flying. And I have two days out next week, one for instructing and one for the PFA Rally.

Even if I can somehow fit it all in, I'm not sure that over four hour's flying when I'm sure to be tired and haven't had any time off for ages and ages is really sensible.

Does anyone know how to make eight-day weeks or 30-hour days?

Morning LOWnSLOW ,

I 'm nearly here .I made it as far as south LONDON from the MINCH .
(That was the easy bit ,by car )

I have even been and checked out my departing airfield , WW, yesterday .
(us new PPL's with our shinny puece plastic wallets, like to be extra prepared .)

CHECKED out the grass runway ,and which direction I need to point in
and I am only the CO-PILOT .,
(well navigator )
(oerrrrrrrrr just checked my map and seen all the busy air space , at least there should not be any low flying tornadoes ,that I normally have to deal with )

well perhaps I will be just the informed passenger , and sit back and enjoy the flight .

AM very excited and the tiny bit of sky I am looking out at from my window ,looks promising .

looking forward to seeing you again LOWNSLOW , Hope you recognise me , I errrrrrrr think I have forgotten to pack the right colour boots .

fly safe every one ,

A great little meet up with some excellent people, a real pleasure meeting you all again and those who I met today for the first time too. Weather was a bit iffy, low cloudbase, showers, grey and misty sometimes but flyable.

I think there were 17 aircraft made it, don't know how many people were in them, I think someone had a list somewhere of who was there. A microlight arrived as most headed off into the gloom, that must have been Gengis and AB. I did like watching Pink's unique way of getting into a Yak, very amusing indeed, I hope someone got a picture of that. :)

I took about 80 pictures in all, I will sort a few out later on and post them when I get time.

Again, great to meet you all, hope you all got home ok. :)

A very enjoyable day, even if the weather was a little, interesting.:uhoh:

For Mrs K & I, the day started in a gentle breeze and high cloud at North Weald. We bumped into FNG, who was taking the black Bulldog up to Bourn to collect a friend before coming on to Sandown.

We routed south through the City Zone to Biggin VOR, west to Ockham then southwest to Midhurst beacon. My left arm was getting hot from the sunshine! After Mid, the cloud started to come down, so we flew west looking for high cloud and low ground, before routing south, passing about a mile west of Goodwood. The last bank of cloud was the lowest, down to about 800', but we ducked under it and popped out into excellent conditions over the Solent.

There was an American aircraft carrier parked in the Solent, did anyone get any photos of it? It looked very small from 3000'. from which height all of the IoW was visible. We found Sandown easily, made a 'S' shaped approach to join downwind to land on 23. And the best part was that the wind was straight down the runway.

We were the first to arrive at 11:00, but shortly after, two Luscombes with PhoenixFlyer and friend, followed by Monocock and Pink Aviator, landed. After that, I lost track of who arrived, but I met FNG, TonyR + Crew, Mcross & Jenni, Lowtimer and Widebody in their Yaks, BLR & Cloud 69, Wycombe, DOC400 and dog, Saab Dastard and of course, LownSlow.

The weather deteriorated during the day and at about 2:00 we all seemed to take a collective descision to go home. At this point, AB and Genghis arrived.

The cloud base was even lower on the way home, the aircraft carrier looked lot bigger from 800', I could see the F-14s ranged on the deck. I'd decided to follow the south coast home, but we never really managed to get above 1000'. We flew past Shoreham and at Seaford turned north though the gap in the Downs and routed more or less north, although the navigation was influenced more by the cloud than the compass. It was drizzling more or all the way back and I'd forgotten that the Koliber canopy doesn't seal properly, so we had a constant drip-drip of cold water on our knees.

But the cloud lifted just south of Rochester and by the time we crossed the Thames, it was wonderful flying weather, we could see well into central London to the west and over to the Essex coast to the east.

Well...

What a day.....

I departed home at about 0915 hrs to "scud" my way to White Waltham for breakfast and a good read of the Sunday Times. The weather was less than perfect but I was confident that conditions would improve gradually throughout the day.

WW were as friendly as ever on call up and I parked up as usual in front of the clubhouse. The first person I was met by was the great Pink who very kindly presented me with a birthday present and a big hug which I must say was very welcome....!

A civilised breakfast followed in the clubhouse with Phoenix and the lovely FiFi who both epitomise friendliness and are the most welcoming couple to meet up with.

At 10.40 we decided to make tracks and the Pink Aviator and I launched ourselves into the air (how we made it with all her luggage I will never know) and we were off.

Pink flew for a while as I decided the best route. The Farnborough overhead seemed the best option and I decided to call them up just at the point where Pink decided she wanted to discuss her Cannondale bike gear problem.......and so it goes!!!

As a co-pilot goes the Pink is awesome. She really can spot any aircraft at 20 miles. We were overhead Petersfield and she managed to spot a helicopter over the Needles.......I must say I was impressed.

We landed just behind another Luscombe (only the best get there first!) and parked up alongside G-BSSA.

From then on the weather turned from average to sh**e!!

I (and the Pink Lady) had decided on Sandown Fish and Chips in the town centre had the weather been agreeable. The weather was not agreeable..........in fact it was "kak de le chien". It went from bad to worse in an hour. By 1300 hrs my hair gel had been saturated and my lack of coat meant I was freezing my tits off.

I met some great peeps today though.......

BRL....I thought you would be older but your age surprised me. Had I known you were of similar age I would have tried to get away with more controversial subjects..............errr maybe not then!!!! P.S I want your baseball cap......

Cloud69..... You know you want one.....tell your wife it's an investment.!!!!! Whenever you want a trip let me know.....

Phoenix.....You are a true gentleman.

FiFi....Your guy is such a gentleman I reckon we could get away with a bit of quiet necking without him noticing.....!!!!!

Saab.....A cool geezer. Too cool for most. You were the obvious one in the correctly chosen baseball hat!!!

DOC.400.....I love DOG 400. You are clearly sorted in your flying life. i.e. a great plane and a great deal. lucky b*****d....

FNG.....you are one to be reckoned with.....as Bazzers go.....you are on top of it????

FiFi.....oh, sorry, already covered you.....but you're still a beautifully accented Francais belle....

TonyR...only chatted briefly....but you seem as on the ball in real life as you do on PPRuNe and Flyer forum.

Kolibear....the flash geezer with the neweset plane in the line up..............we'll forgive you though as it's a true farmers plane....(can I have a go please?)

Genghis and AB......was that you arriving as we dived for cover??????????I hope not as I wanted to experience the delights of your tight fitting tops.....(That's to you AB, not G)

Anyway. We set off as it looked as if it could not get much worse. I was flattered by Cloud69's interest in my a/c and am determined to find him one of similar standard very soon. Three of us dived off r'way 25 at approx 1500 hrs and pounced into the gloom. G-BSSA carried out ideal PFA rulings as I cruised overhead Portsmouth at 1800 ft. G-BSSA's cockpit was no doubt full of "does he realise he's breaking the PFA law..." comments!!! G-BSSA carried out a perfect avoidance of all built up areas. myself (G-AKUG) was more concerned at getting back to White Waltham without the Pink Aviator switching to "Me Me Me Me" mode..... I was lucky..she didn't!!

Half way back I did laugh as Wide Body (who I have renamed Smooth B'tard) cruised past us in a state of controlled "semi-stall" and then lowered the nose and "gave it some" in his Yak. Pink had been up for a few loops etc in it earlier and she was ever so polite to me on the way home about the Luscombe. (I suppose it's like someone taking you for a ride in a Ferrari and then your mate drives you home in his MGB.... say no more).

White Waltham was in beautiful weather and I left the rest there as I headed home for the family bar-b-q.

All in all a bloody good day out. Putting faces to names was really interesting and I'm so glad I went.

Today I have learned two things....

1. People are very different in real life to how they seem on PPRuNe.

2. Pink Aviator has a heart of gold and if I ever meet that bloody ToryBoy...........

Yes, t'was myself and Aerbabe who arrived a little late in the Microlight - the weather had turned moderately horrible as we reached Lymington, and we were forced low level around the South side of the Island the rest of the way. Safe, but slow.

AB departed before me by Yak directly to North Weald, about the time a friend of mine turned up, so we did a local around the Island, then I departed home moderately late - in actually some (finally) superb weather. Took a look at the USS Enterprise on the way back - ugly and no ski-jump, but very impressive (I didn't get too close in case I got shot at).

Arrived back to my home base to find there was a huge cloud dumping rain on the landscape everywhere except my strip. 2 minutes after I landed it added the strip to it's score, continuing to do so for about an hour. Superb timing!, particularly since I did a couple of PFLs on the way back for personal currency.

A thoroughly good day out.

What a nice way to spend a Sunday, usually I fly south to reach "good weather" but today we left blue skies only to find a very grey south coast.

ATC at both Bristol (where the crap weather started) and Bournemouth were very helpful on the way down and even kept telling us our position.

I am sorry out visit was so short and I did not get time to chat to more of you, perhaps a PPRuNe "weekend" next.

I had hoped to fly low level on the way back but it was not going to work so it was IMC from about 800ft after take off and remained very poor until Gloucester. I managed to get between layers at 2500ft.

Most of Wales was really lovely and I wanted to let one of the others fly home so we called Welshpool and got a great welcome. We landed there and had more tea. We sat out in the sushine and chatted, this was my first time there since the change in management and I will be back.

My friends will now be reading PPRuNe with more interest now that they realise we are real people with something to offer those with an interest in avaition.

What a great mix of both aircraft & pilots, I hope we can meet up at other events during the summer (if we get one)

Best wishes

Solent radar helpful too!!

I'd elected to go low level up Southampton Water and then up the Test valley back to WW, but they informed me that the worst of the wx was there and suggested I go east about their zone so could just squeeze between the cloud and the downs.

Like the pics, BRL. I'm sorry that we did not get to fly together in the Bulldog, but next time.

After picking up NinjaBill at sleepy Bourn, we had an easy run down between Stansted and Luton (excellent RIS), then via Waltham and Farnborough. All fine until we reached the Solent were the clag was in, and we landed as it started to rain. Wide and Ms Pink went off to pull 6G in the Yak while we ate butties. Weather prevented swapping rides, and we all scattered a bit early, but it was good to see all those who made it and it seems that we all made it home safely.

NinjaBill and I set off intending to run north with Low Timer and Aerbabe (who had left Genghis in charge of the Thruster and hitched a Yak ride), but we didn't like the cloud near the hills and turned east along the coast at 900 feet.

Low Timer's Yak peeled off as we passed Goodwood. Bill and I lobbed into Shoreham for tea and a re-think. The boys at Lancing College were still playing cricket in the rain.

Gatwick reported cloud at 700 feet and Biggin was clagged in,
so we decided to fly the long way around following the coast, clear of the wall of cloud just inland. The French lady on Lydd Radio couldn't hear us, but as we passed Dover we found blue sky, cut inland, and were aerobatic by the time we could see Manston (Bill's loops better than mine, but my roll OK) . It was too late to rescue Bill's Cap10 at Bourn, so we landed at North Weald with the most perfect view of London on final for 20, and managed to get a couple of pints before they closed the bar to watch the footy. Phone calls confirmed that AB and Lowtimer were eating icecreams in the sun at Sywell. Then chez FNG for takeaway curry.

Bill has just got on a train to go to Bourn: his boss seems understanding and the weather for his trip to Sherburn looks great.

A really good day: Bill and I found that two heads were better than one for decision making, and enjoyed the challenge.

Next one in September/October at North Weald?

It was pleasant for me to land away and meet people, instead of doing aeros.

Not sure from pictures that Pitts should go out without it's spats (looks agricultural).

I left later, squeezed through gap in South Downs (at the same time as an opposing twin). The weather was then clear back until Redhill, which had showers.

It was a good day out, despite the weather. The flight home was the worst weather I have flown in (away from the local Redhill area) and it was a good confidence boost to get through it without incident. I opted to fly IFR (I Follow Rivers) instead of my more usual IFR&R (I Follow Roads & Railways) and the Arun provided my route through the Downs. I managed to maintain 1000ft and keep in sight of the surface for all bar about 5 seconds!

SoppyBeagle managed to overtake me both ways, on roughly the same route, without either of us seeing the other!

It was good to put a few new PPRuNe names (and real ones!) to faces, although I didn't get round to talk to everybody. Maybe next time.

Great that so many made it despite the Wx.

We decided to wait until 4'ish to depart - it had lifted a bit over the Solent, but we were down to 1000 QNH coasting in E. of Portsmouth, although we did manage to sneak through some fluffy gaps (quite good fun actually) up to about 1400' at New Alresford. North of that, it was plain sailing and we managed to get on the deck back at Wycombe before some whopping CB's set in late afternoon.

A fun day out, tinged by the news of the accident that TonyR mentioned which I heard about when I got home.

Have to say that we enjoyed putting faces to a few names.

Mono, can I swap altimeters, the one on SA is obviosly mis-reading. We chose to go right so that if the clouds did decend we would be closer to Goodwood. Did you say that you fly from a farm strip at Hungerford, if so, any chance of landing there?

It was a bit of an epic weekend for me.

I set off from Sherburn in TangoUniform at about 9.30 am, and after a short distance, managed to hit some turblulnce, which bounced my map into an unreachable corner behind the other seat, so I had to divert quickly into Gamston to get it back.

Once this was done, and the landing fee quickly paid, I resumed on route to Bourn, getting there just after 11am, and meeting FNG and G-CBCB, a rather smart black and yellow bulldog

http://www.geoffhill.shared-inter.net/pics/bulldogandcapsmall.jpg
CharlieBravo and TangoUniform at Bourn

We then routed round the top of london, helped by an excellent RIS from Luton, past White Waltham, and overhead Fanborough. All the time staying a little bit ahead of the weather, landing at Sandown just before 1pm, and parking next to a large contingent of Pprune aircraft.

Unlike Sunny Newcastle, down South, it seems to rain continually, and did so for the duration of our stay, and we decided to leave in a clear-ish patch of weather around 3pm, however we hit cloud at 700-900ft, and after travelling around the coast, made a quick stop at Shoreham for tea, biccies and avgas. By then it was after 4pm, and with Bourn closing at 6pm, it didnt look like I was getting back that day, so made arrangements for the Cap to stay overnight at Bourn.

http://geoffhill.shared-inter.net/pics/yakandbulldog.jpg
WideBody Running Away

We then decided to follow the coast all the way around, staying clear of cloud, sometimes as low as 700ft, and routed all the way to Dover, and Cut to the West of Manston, as the cloud base was starting to rise, just in time for a few loops and rolls, before getting to North Weald, just in time for Tea and Medals at the Squadron.

I then stayed overnight at FNG towers overnight, before jumping on the train to Cambridge, and a taxi ride to Bourn. I managed to get airbourn at Bourn at about 10am, and flying IFR (I follow roads) along the A1 at about 1500ft, and just as I was about to call for Matz penetration at Church Fenton to land at Sherburn, a 3 - 4 mile across hole opened in the clouds, and a loud booming voice said "You cant fly under that without climibing and doing a few aeros", So I was forced to loop and roll for 15 minutes before landing at sherburn at 1/4 past 11, and finally getting to work 4 hours late, which only goes to show

Time to spare? Go by Air

My IOW trip started on Saturday night. I was lucky enough, while hitch-hiking outside the op's office at North Weald, to be picked up by Lowtimer. He put me up for the night, and even gave me access to a real bed & hot running water!

As the sun rose, I regretted having an after-dinner coffee the night before. I tried to make intelligent noises over breakfast, alternately nodding in agreement or making soothing noises, while Lowtimer ploughed through the flight planning.

We arrived at Sywell at 9am, dressed up like rejects from Top Gun, and were airborne in the Yak52 by about 10am. The cloud base was fairly low, and I was finding it difficult to keep up with Lowtimer's calculations with the maths involved in converting Russian cubits to good old British feet. However, we remained safe and made it over the high ground into Popham.

GtE then drove me across to Chilbolton, where we unwrapped the wunderflymo, waved as Lowtimer & his Yak went past, put on several extra layers of clothing, and wallowed our way into the air. When we reached the IOW, the cloud had lowered to around 800 feet. We decided to skirt round the south coast of the island and approach Sandown from the south. It seemed like a perfectly good circuit to us, but we were informed our appearance had been somewhat mellodramatic. I hope no-one was too concerned by our late arrival. LowNSlow can't have been - he pointed and laughed as we taxied up.

I stayed in Sandown long enough to get rained on, have a cup of tea, collect some more rain, eat a sandwich and get rained on again. Then everyone seemed to make a collective decision to leave, so Lowtimer and I leapt gracefully into the Yak and equally gracefully into the air.

We followed FNG's pretty black 'n' yellow bulldog round to the south coast, then split off north for a more direct route to Sywell. Shortly after, I spotted a small blue patch. This soon turned into a wonderful vision of perfect patches of fluffiness, set in a background of bright, glorious blue. Made especially beautiful by the contrast to the cloud/rain dodging the rest of the day.

Once back at Sywell we left one gloating and one concerned message on FNG's mobile, then headed home for chicken casserole and medals.

Thanks Lowtimer & GtE for your respective captaincies. You both instilled a sense of confidence in me, despite the inclement weather. :ok:

A belated post thanks to the infernal Sasser virus!

Great to see so many people there despite the kak weather and good to be able to add more faces to the list of Pprune names.

AB I wasn't laughing when you and GtE turned up in the Mixmaster, I was just reminiscing about the laast time I flew in a Thruster, honest. I was one of the ones who adopted the sheep mentality and nipped off in the first tranche of escapees.

Thanks to BRL and the other chaps for organising a Pprune parking place and a reduced landing fee.

I was one of the ones who slunk off to the West via Stoney Cross, Popham and North. Solent Approach were indeed helpful as I bumbled along under the clouds. At least the rain washed the bird poo off my wings (and some of the paint on my prop leading edge). I didn't really enjoy nipping over the Solent at 800' even with my trusty lifejacket on..... The joys of sitting behind a 58 year old engine I suppose.

I did notice that there seemed to be a dearth of life jackets present. All good swimmers are we := I wear one even to cross the Solent after a chap in a C172 ditched 400yds off the Mainland coast and nearly drowned because the current prevented him swimming ashore......

Let's hope for better weather for the next one and thanks again to all who turned up.

To the list of useless things in aviation that includes 'fuel in the bowser' and 'runway behind you', I suppose we can now add 'lifejackets in the hangar' - for thats where ours are kept.:(

But at least the U.S Navy did have the foresight to moor a Floating Emergency Landing Strip in the middle of the Solent for us.

From 3000' on the way into Sandown, we could probably have glided to IoW, from 800' onthe way back - no chance. Thank you LnS for pointing it out.

Remember the thread a while back about landing on a carrier? How many would have been tempted if the deck hadn't been littered with F-14's, F-18's etc? :ok: :ok:

Oh look, my engine's just developed a fault, I'll have to land on that convenient carrier over there..................
