Hi DOC

I'll be there with the Essex boys. Not what we will be arriving in, as it will depend on the weather.

Not if the pictures were prints on site, if that's what you mean. I'll be putting mine on my website when I get the films back.

There's an entourage planning to fly in from Redhill - currently six planes. One shame is that you can't PPR more than 24 hours in advance )-:

Cheers,

MD - don't worry too much about PPR - theres no slot time & plenty of parking.

Look forward to seeing you all there .

We'll be there - even if it will be a drive-in and fly out for us!

Having witnessed your propensity for demanding a lift to your aircraft at OW a fortnight ago from the refuelling truck that was busilly engaged in his day-job, ie refuelling my aircraft and had a list of other biplanes that wanted motion-lotion......

shouldn't your statement read:

We'll be there - even if it will be a drive-in, drive right up to a/c, park very close to it, fly out for us, return and taxi back to waiting car! Pah, none of that walking malarkey for us SX folk!!

:) :)

Stiknthemud?

You've obviously overflown my strip!

We've had so much rain/snow in the past wek that the water table has risen significantly and I'm sure that if I were to take my toy out, mud would certainly be the operative word!

Actually on the 4th, I'll be in my workshop making final preparations for the arrival of my container from the States which contains such goodies as aeroplane fuselages, wing kits and a very trick wide deck, parallel valved IO360.

ETA is 0930 on Monday 5th!

I might change my handle to BobTheBuilder after that date!

Sounds like a good event.

Maybe we should arrange some sort of PPRuNe meeting point. I failed to spot any other prooners at Old Warden recently, apart from Mike Cross's btch that is.

At Duxford earlier in the year Aerbabe and FFF set up a PPRuNe base camp outside the canteen and distributed mobile numbers so that lost members could be talked down for a successful approach. Maybe we need something similar.

I will be there weather permitting. I was most upset that I did not meet any PPruners at the Old Warden fly in on the 17th, but I had no way of identifying anyone either!

Is this still on?

WX permitting of course

I've probably put the gremlins on it by booking a plane. At least I got a few circuits in today, so I'm current aginst the remote possibility of it being flyable tomorrow!

Meet up sometime between 11 and 12?

Hi Al ,

or can I call you Stik:

I have decided 2004 will be ring tweak year and I am going to compile a list of short (but legal) strips to get the Arrer in. (and out)

Please let me know the length/orientation of your strip (plus any interesting radio masts/trees on the approaches) for a 1 -up (naturally) and low tanks visit.

Always assuming PPR!

safe flying

A very enjoyable day out. A big thanks to the organisers and caterers (excellent Ham, Egg and Chips), to DOC.400 for providing plane and pilot and SaaB Dastard for the company.

It was getting quite busy just after lunch

Saab Dastard and DOC.400 cunningly try to start a seized PW engine by turning it the wrong way

This was a very sad sight, is there any chance of her flying again?

And finally, the journey home. A big thanks to Thames Radar for the direct routing.

Thanks for the lift Doc - yes, it was a bit gloomy ;)

Great to meet you, MotF - and nice pics, too. :ok:

We only saw Kolibear and EvePee there - and they weren't even flying in! Were there any other PPRuNers there?

I look forward to the next one :)

MotF - nice photo of finals - I've never had a chance to admire the view before! The Beech 18 is up for sale if you'd like to make an offer and rumour has it that the Catalina is going to Israel. The B-25 is definately a candidate for the scrapper though.

The DC-4s are alive and well, I saw one of them produce a huge smokescreen as the engines were run up a few weeks ago. There is more oil on the tarmac under their engines now than there is in them :)

It was a good day - more aircraft arrived than were expected so Thank you to all who braved the weather, I heard pilots calling up who had come from from Fenland and Nethersthorpe.

I shall pass your compliments about the food on to 'The Naafi Girls' - who worked really hard.

I was there, enjoying the most excellent turnout of aircraft. Does anyone know how many were there in total, in the end? I heard that only 4 were booked in originally but there must have been 60-odd when I left...

I booked in about 30 aircraft between 9:00 and 11:30, but I believe around 80 turned up! Figures are to be confirmed.

DOC.400
5th Jan 2004, 17:42
I did a rough count of about 60 at lunchtime, of which at least ten were Jodels or Robins, natch!!

A really good day and once again top marks to all at EGSX for their hospitality.

I saw Kolibear taking the covers off when I walked over to book in, but he was gone when I came back out so I didn't get a chance to say Hi.

The circuit got very busy at times and the guys on ATC did a sterling job.

"The circuit got very busy at times and the guys on ATC did a sterling job."

Yes, it was a bit mad, especially when we encountered an opposite direction microlight on base leg....
:D

However, they do need to ask pilots to 'land long and clear at the intersection' to avoid opposite direction conflict outside the Squadron. Happened to me once before, it's fine if u know the system, but not if u r new to NW. Otherwise, "a grand day out Gromit!!"

I must have missed that but then I did leave at 13:30.

Please mail me the chap's reg. I know most of the local microlighters and I know all of the ML pilots that attended.

I'm sure he will want to send his apologies as they are a well behaved bunch.

barshaker -

Sorry we missed you - are you sure that was me removing the covers not evepee? :)

DOC.400 -

Normally there is a one-way system operating, you turn off at the intersection down 13 and return back up the taxiway outside The Squadron. On sunday it was so busy the marshals were getting a/c off the runway early and down the taxiway outside The Squadron. At least 3 aircraft taxied in front of us before there was a gap to pull out into and taxi to the threshold.

Penguina -

Yes you missed a good one, hope to see you at the next Fly-in - not sure when that will be though. You still owe me a dance :O

I saw Kolibear written on them and presumed the rest ;)

Bar Shaker,

I was in the front with Doc 400, we landed @ 11.55 and I remember the conflicting microlight - but I didn't bother looking for the reg. I don't know that the ml landed @ the Weald - I have a memory of seeing it passing westwards, so may just have been bimbling through the overhead

Didn't spoil a splendid day, thankfully! :ok: :)

barshaker -

And you were correct! Actually, the covers have 'Koliber' on them, its to help the reggy spotters who think its a Rallye :p I don't think I could get away with having my pprune name on the group's aircraft !

Saab,

evepee & I were airborne at about 12:10, turned east and kept a close eye on 3 microlights on our left who appeared to have tracked north (!) of the airfield, also heading east. They eventually turned south passed below us and we lost them in the haze.

bar shaker

SD

I suspect the pilot wasn't local then. Certainly the local microlight pilots knew of the event as it was on their website. If they weren't going along, they would have stayed well away.

The whole area is a choke point and anyone travelling NW - SE is going to be going through the area. If someone non radio saw the glider going LH onto 20 (as it was all day) he may have followed thinking he was safe.

He definitely didn't come in. I landed in a group of 3 at 11:30. I had a local to the south at about 12:15 and was followed back in by the only other flexwing to land, flown by my old instructor, who followed me on a RH circuit. We landed at the same time as the black R44 (now that was an interesting approach, but lets not go there ;)).

Kolibear

Have to catch you next time then. At least I know where to look now :)

Saab Dastard
8th Jan 2004, 02:56
Bar shaker - Thanks, that figures!

Kolibear - Haze? what haze? it was 9999 all the time, honest guv ;)

Looking forward to Coventry already!
