The BBC are reporting:
The report from CBS, cited to sources, also includes information that the president is likely to charge tariffs on low-value merchandise shipped from China to individual US consumers. The White House has not commented on this. Currently, a US loophole allows duty-free shipments of Chinese goods worth less than $800. This has enabled Chinese companies such as Shein and Temu to skirt import fees. The changes - if they happen - would affect the shopping habits of American consumers who buy cheap products online from China. |
Possibly underrated is how a collapse in conference attendance would impact specific destinations like Las Vegas, which people might otherwise believe would be fine on the assumption tourists still go.

Exchange rates may make the US more appealing but...
European countries are warning their citizens that if they travel to the US they could be arbitrarily detained indefinitely and/or have their children taken away for months, all with no judicial oversight. I would expect that this is likely to impact tourist travel to see "the mouse", particularly if it starts spreading on Mumsnet. Losing your children hits a very deep fear. This is the UK advice: The US authorities can stop you entering the country if they have safeguarding concerns about a child. If this happens, the US authorities will take the child into their care, and their return from the US could take months. The FCDO cannot speed up the return of British nationals aged 17 and under from the US. |

Is that new advice?

I believe it came out a couple of weeks ago. There is similar advice for German citizens as well, so I expect it to be pretty Europe wide. There has been a number of journalistic stories doing the rounds re shackling and detaining people visiting the US who have not even got into the country, but been detained at entry port. I certainly will not be going there or even changing planes - though I do try and avoid that anyway after a bad experience at LAX. Cheers Mr Mac |
Sorry, I meant is it a new instruction from the Americans. To be honest, it sounds like the sort of provision that is buried in most countries anti-people traffic legislation.
There have been issues in Europe when the surname on a child's passport is different to an accompanying adults passport. |

I think US tourism from UK and Europe will take a bath due to both Mr Trumps antics and statements, as well as exchange rates. It will be interesting to see what happens to US visitor numbers coming this way, if there is a perception in the US that Europe or indeed Canada are unhappy with the stance from Washington. It does not take much to put US tourists off venturing outside of the mainland US or Mexico, Canada ,Caribbean, though of course some of these may also be in future perceived as threatening / unsafe. Interesting times unfortunately.

There is now a thread running in the headline Rumours & News forum. So, for now, I'll close this thread. Just remember that posting in that discussion is deep water and you will need to be able to swim fast! I advise just to read it.
