Cincinnati would be another possible I think.

It hasn't stopped Belfast and Cork having transatlantic services in the past. The short runway in Cork is more an issue than lack of US pre-clearance though it is a disadvantage for both cities.
t's likely a US carrier will renew services to Belfast and Cork rather than Aer Lingus in any case.

A321XLR take off is around 2,200 at MTOW so would the runway continue to be an issue? Would East Coast routes which don't need a 100% fuel load work without compromising on cargo or pax/baggage?

It feels like only a 300/400m extension would be enough to really knock this issue on the head but what appetite/drive is there for that?

Runway feels like a red herring which is thrown out too easily

cumbrianboy 17th December 2025 10:34

The A321XLR would certainly be a runway issue at ORK, it was/is performance limited on 28L at DUB in wet conditions and needs more than 2,200m ... it is fine on the new northern runway, 28R with the extra length ...

There’s plenty of equipment out there that can operate from Cork to East Coast, but Aer Lingus don’t have it.

the pre-clearance is a factor against Cork T/A but not the only one. The market size is borderline. It Corrk suffers from relatively frequent weather related closures. All those count against a service that is otherwise only marginal from an economic perspective.

CCR 19th December 2025 16:22

Think the 757 is the only aircraft that can fly from Cork to the US without weight restrictions from its short 7,000 ft runway.
Delta and United still operate the 757 but they will be replaced by the XLR in time.
It's a pity the XLR lacks the 757 take off performance.

The main runway in ORK (16/34) is also in the wrong orientation for the prevailing wind conditions. Any significant weather will dent an already marginal/compromised takeoff performance. Think about how rarely 16/34 at DUB is used.

Is it worth spending 9 figures to extend runways in difficult topography for 1 or 2 summer seasonal flights a day?

The LR/XLR struggle off the south runway at times at DUB which is 2,600m. 16/34 is 2,133m at ORK.

Anyway back to DUB...

Carriers operating at Dublin have encountered a legal setback in their efforts to overturn a passenger cap at the Irish hub, after a high-level opinion advised that slot allocation can take into account passenger limits imposed by planning authorities.

The Irish Aviation Authority had warned in 2024 that it would impose a cap on passenger numbers at Dublin – restricting slot availability – because a planning condition for its terminal expansion restricted annual capacity to 32 million.

Airlines serving Dublin have argued that the planning condition is outdated and the cap, due to be implemented last year, was suspended pending a European Union legal ruling.

Court of Justice advocate general Manuel Campos Sanchez-Bordona has published a legal opinion that an annual passenger limit imposed by a planning authority can be taken into account during slot allocation.

Dublin airport has been slot co-ordinated since 2007, around the time when Irish planning authorities laid down the 32 million-passenger limit as a condition for terminal expansion.
The opinion of the Advocate General is usually a fair indicator of which way the Court itself will go.

Hainan seeking to go daily on DUB-PEK.

For EI in S26, DUB-YYZ is being upgauged from an A332 to an A333, the second daily DUB-IAD is being upgauged from a A321 to A333. That A321 will operate within Europe instead, DUB-OSL for example has been upgauged from A320 to A321.

The A332 originally scheduled for YYZ is currently in Perpignan without any engines (one with EI, one with IB). Its on a power-by-the-hour lease to speculation is it won't be coming back now.

ACL report for winter is out. Nothing too exciting on first glance, MU to PVG continuing year round, LDY and BGI added for EA and EI respectively. The ME3 are all showing 3 x daily.
