I was asking for peoples views. After all this web site is full of peoples views who dont even work for an airline. I would like to know what people on here think will happen to Baby.

It is a very sad day and probably one of many more. The thing is when a business decision is made that affects you directly it will obviously affect how you react. Of course we have always known that when the 330's went to MAN they would of been dragged down to LHR within the year if we could have gone across the pond. The company has been watching MAN ever since it started and as soon as the bean counter tipped in the favour of LHR, then MAN would go.

Anyone crowing about the decision should be very careful, we have no idea what Lufty have in store and as sure as eggs are eggs there will be more tears before bedtime for more bmi employees.

For those colleagues of mine based in MAN that are going to face uncertain futures and no doubt there will be speculation, rumours and strife in the next 90 days, you have my heartfelt sympathy and support. I am based at LHR but you are still my colleagues and I have flown with many of you over the years. There are no winners here.

FR-I think people are a bit pre-occupied with their own futures at the moment. Possible outcomes for Baby have been discussed at length in several threads including this & the EMA one. I think more will be revealed in the next few months but for now, I'd say this thread will be full of reaction to today's news

Gutted with the losses at MAN. Always looked forward to travelling out of MAN and you all impressed friends & relatives who travelled on one form of ticket or another. I've seen first hand the effects/repercussions of such cutbacks and until you've been through it, I think its difficult to appreciate. Maybe a few people should think of that before posting

bmi ends MAN longhaul flights
 

After months of rumour bmi have finally announced they will be ceasing their long haul operations in MAN. ORD will end in Januray followed by LAS/ANU/BGI in April. Their two A330s will be transferred to LHR to cover eastern routes. Will result in about 140 redundancies, sad news for their dedicated MAN staff and the region.

To everyone who todays announcement involves. I am sure you and all your co workers will pull together and get through this. I myself was struck with the same !!!!ty news back in 2006 by BA and know how it feels to have a decision like this announced to you right before xmas. Chin up and i hope it all works out for you.

my sympathys to those staff affected. Chin-up as said, not a nice time to be receiving such news, but hopefully in the long term things will be brighter.

I am ground staff at LHR for BD. Good luck to everyone at Manchester you guys have been delt a raw deal by this latest bit of news. But everyone down here is looking over our sholders to see when we are going to have something done to us. So I think there will be more sad news. God knows what LH have in store for us all.

I am very sorry to see Manchester Longhaul services go. Personally I only managed to use the service to fly to Washington once in all the years I have worked for the bmi group.

I have to admit though, the service and professionalism of my colleagues and the product we deliver is 1st class. The Manchester operation actually gave me as a staff member a great deal of pride and faith in bmi when other areas of the company did not shine as brightly.

I know this is a tough luck story and business decisions are made for business reasons - not necessarily what we like to see happen. But I can say with 100% certainty, all those involved in the Manchester operation over the years can go their separate ways with pride and their heads held high for a job well done. Good luck and best wishes - I applaud you all. :D

I echo MOD KITs words.
The LH operation ex-MAN was/is always topnotch.
I was lucky enough to fly use the service to ORD/IAD/LAS/BGI and, even though we were staff, were still made to feel special, right from check-in, thru' to the lounge and as for the onboard service? Unbelievable.
Not the words of a staff member wearing rose-tinted glasses, but someone who appreciates the personal touch.
I wish all the staff affected the best luck in the world.
These are uncertain times for ALL of us within the bmi group but all we can do is stay focussed on what we all do best. Making baby/bmir/bmi the best damned airline that we possibly can !

I have used the BMI flight to ORD on a couple of occasions and indeed to IAD during the time of its operation. It's a sad loss for the airport and will doubtless leave a good number of people without jobs at a particularly difficult time.
BMI offered an excellent product that will be missed. I believe AA is increasing schedules on the ORD route in 2009 but with B757 equipment which IMO is not the best choice of aircraft for a transatlantic flight.
With the takeover of BMI by LH, maybe there's food for thought for United Airlines to compete with AA on this route with 767's as a Star Alliance Partner?

So BMI really wanted an open skies deal with the USA but then when an open skies deal comes through for another country and it might benefit another airline they moan! Can't have it both ways BMI !!

I agree, it's fine for airlines to have draconian protection agreements when it suits them. Mind you BA, VS are just the same. Just wait 'til ze Germans get going with their new toys!
