Blackpool
If there were two identical hols on sale - like the Sorrento - but to a destination we liked, then Blackpool would get our moneydue to parking and so on. Also, a much better airport experience for us based on late luggage on three occasions at Manchester.
We have parked at Manchester for about £30 per week prebooked. |
so for 2 adults + 2 kids typical family you save close on£60 before you even look at the costs of petrol both ways.:O

This post has been edited out as factually incorrect.

But had I booked both journeys from MAN...I would have had parking £30 + petrol or £28 return train fairs at the very cheapest. Total £30 parking, £28 train fairs..Total £58 |
EDIT:
delta154 You have a point. Parking plus petrol flying from MAN would be approx £40. So deducting the ADF would mean BLK was £20 cheaper. My apologies. |
Not should you travel to MAN by Train at the very cheapest estimate of £28, add that to parking fees of £30 and the total is £58. |
Confused, join the club
Rail, 2 adults at £28 return plus two children at £8 return = £72 (the most expensive) Road £30 parking plus £10 fuel = £40 Direct from BLK 2 adult ADF = £20 Note that 1 and 3 must include travel from home to rail station/airport |

That's what confused me which is why I laid the above out!

delta154..
See my post above - I reckoned wrong..you are right. However the sentiment of my original post remains - BLK much cheaper even with the ADF. Rail travel at even the cheapest estimate still leaved BLK £8 cheaper. Travel by car and parking plus petrol at least £40 - deduct the ADF and you save £20 flying BLK rather than MAN. Note that 1 and 3 must include travel from home to rail station/airport Now I am confused...what's the connection, surely one cancels the other out in this discussion. Rail, 2 adults at £28 return plus two children at £8 return = £72 (the most expensive) OK I have edited my post before I read this - So leave as rhetorical if you wish. According to delta154 - Rail fares could be as low as £28 return for a family of four...I made the point this was exceptional, or words to that effect. |
My bad, I read it as £20 per adult and £8 per child i.e. £56 (I'd read the adult fare as £28).
Yes you are correct about those journeys balancing each other out. |
THUMBS UP FOR BLACKPOOL!
Blackpool Airport has beaten off stiff competition to receive one of the top customer scores in the latest survey of UK airports by Which? Travel. The Lancashire and Lake District airport got the second highest overall customer score of 77% in the survey of 28 airports nationwide. More than 8,000 members participated in the online survey by Which? - the leading independent consumer champion in the UK. Respondents were asked to rate their satisfaction with and likelihood to recommend a UK airport they had used in the previous 12 months. Participants were questioned on a range of factors relating to their airport experience from the environment and parking to queues and delays. Sue Kendrick, Corporate Affairs Manager for Blackpool Airport, said: "We are delighted to hear the results of the Which? Travel Survey and that everyone's hard work and commitment has been recognised, the staff here really do try and make a difference to passengers' experience at the airport. Not the first time BLK has done well in this type of survey.is it?. |
Happy New Year, Ernest. Great to hear some positivity at last. Makes a change. Long may it continue into 2012!

The problem with such surveys is that if one single person submitted a rating for Blackpool and that single rating was for 77%, then Blackpool gets a rating of 77%. :=
i call it the Palmair syndrome, and as such, any survey like this should be taken with a huge grain of salt. Rgds |
That's a good point, StoneyBridge.
Based on my recent experience of travelling through Blackpool, I would give it top marks in categories such as (i) solitude, (ii) peace and quiet, and bottom marks in terms of (iii) frequency of services, and (iv) finding anywhere open to buy something to eat or drink at 3pm on a weekday. Sadly, for a variety of reasons it is difficult to find many UK airports that are not either far too big and busy, or far too small and empty. |
Happy New Year, everyone.
The survey is a bit more involved than StoneyBridge Radar indicated...I am sure the BLK result was more than just one person giving a score of 77.Or there would be no point to such surveys..Also this survey was taken before October when there was more traffic than at present. Not the first time BLK has done well in opinion surveys - I think they topped one last year, or the year before. |

UK airports rated by Which? TravelSmall airports do better in member survey 22 December 2011 http://www.which.co.uk/media/images/...t-2-275240.jpg Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield came top of a Which? members survey The UK airport rated the highest by Which? members is Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield, according to a new survey by Which? Travel. The airport got the highest customer score of 80% in the survey, which asked 8,012 members to rate their satisfaction with and likelihood to recommend a UK airport they had used in the previous 12 months. Best small airports It was among a group of smaller airports (with fewer than four million passengers a year) who topped the table. Blackpool was the second placed airport on 77%, followed by Humberside on 76%, and London City and Southampton on 75%. Inverness, Norwich and Exeter also got higher scores than any of the large airports. A bit more than the "Palmair syndrome" - Whatever that is;) The airport got the highest customer score of 80% in the survey, which asked 8,012 members to rate their satisfaction with and likelihood to recommend a UK airport they had used in the previous 12 months.
Not bad for a small airport down on it's heels. |
Donny is a wonderful airport, probably because there's not too many people using it, so it doesn't get too busy, the staff don't get stressed and there aren't too many queues. Unfortunately unless you want to go on sun routes or to Eastern Europe - and I recently had a great break in Lithuania, half courtesy of Wizz - you will be unable to use it. I'd prefer more passengers/routes and a bit more stress to be honest. I'm sure BLK would feel the same.

Back to the BLK v MAN fares dispute.
Booked Mrs IB two sets of return flights (May/Aug) AGP-BLK with Jet2 over the weekend. Adding on the BLK Airport departure release fee, total paid £470. Using Easy into MAN and train to Blackpool North would have been £390. ...and don't start parroting on about car parking...we don't live in the UK, so it's irrelevant to expats and other non-residents (ie: would be visitors to the region). Unless Jet2 and BLK Airport start making the end figure paid competitive, this will be the last set of flights booked to BLK by us. |

...and don't start parroting on about car parking...we don't live in the UK, so it's irrelevant to expats and other non-residents (ie: would be visitors to the region). I would think that you have chosen Blackpool over the cheaper Manchester routing for convenience and that the additional cost of £80 spread over a number of return flights may be money well spent. Unless Jet2 and BLK Airport start making the end figure paid competitive, this will be the last set of flights booked to BLK. |
