GLA never traded as Abbotsinch, it was "Glasgow Airport" from Day One, only needlessly changing to "Glasgow International" in around 1994 (?). I don't think anyone in Scotland ever really calls them anything other than Glasgow and Prestwick, although my Dad did maintain "Abbotsinch" and "Turnhouse" til his dying day. Localism rocks.

Leg 27th October 2013 11:38

You spotters love your trivia :ugh:

Turnhouse was used for many years, as in Edinburgh (Turnhouse)

Glasgow was known in the same vein, Glasgow (Abbotsinch)

Thought you anoraks would know that....

Glasgow Preatwick? That's a Ryanairism, before they came along
it was merely 'Prestwick', have a look at history, when long haul
for ALL Scotland was from PIK, so why would they call it Glasgow?
It was never called that back them, as I said, we have Ryanair
to thank for the confusion and quite frankly stupid name.

The pikeys wanted to use Leuchars, they were going to call that Edinburgh!

Keep spotting chaps... But try to get your facts right.... ;)

Err perhaps you should not make comments like that when you can easily be proved wrong. The designation of Glasgow Prestwick, was infact made several decades ago.

If you look at any of the marketing material, timetables etc etc etc you will see the airport has been Glasgow Prestwick for longer than Ryanair have been in business. Infact it would not be either the airport or any airline who decides on the city the airport is attached to. All you had to do was check your facts with the CAA before posting.

Try not to be a smart a**e unless you really know your facts

Skipness One Echo 27th October 2013 12:43

Oh leg if you're gonna be a smart alec, at least read all of at least one page first. It was BOAC and Trans Canada who began using Glasgow (Prestwick) just as British United used London (Gatwick). Better luck next time with the name calling.... I assume you're not a professional pilot either, with that sort of attention to detail, you'd never remember to lower the flaps before departing!

StainesFS 27th October 2013 13:20

I doubt that there is anyone on this site who is not aware of the marketing benefits to airlines of prefixing Prestwick with Glasgow. To be fair, with the construction of the M77 it is not an arduous journey to the airport.

However, as far as the name of the airport is concerned, it surely is Prestwick, without the Glasgow prefix. After all, it is named as such on NATS AIS documents.

Personally, I've always wished it had been named after Ayr, the rather larger nearby town!

Sunsetrep 27th October 2013 13:36

Just to clarify - it is IATA who designate the city an airport is attached to not the airlines. Hence the reason why on GDS systems and airline / airport systems worldwide if you type GLA which is the official CITY code for both PIK and GLA it returns with both airports. You see the same with London (using LGW as an example).

ZOOKER 27th October 2013 16:08

But EGPK isn't attached to any city. It is attached to Troon, oh, and, er...... Prestwick.

Monkton International.

Which would have made it an ayrport? ;)

Ho ho, very good!!

Sunrep or whatever your name is, you have shot yourself in the foot there. We are talking about airports son, not cities....

Ryanair started it, it WAS not Glasgow Prestwick in the past, you lot should reasearch a little further, goddam spotters should be banned from this site, buggar off to airliner.net or anorak.com might suit you where you can discuss city names or whatever floats your boat, leave aviation to the professionals.... jeez.... :ugh:

ScotsSLF 28th October 2013 07:39

Leg - thats a really professional response. Good grief. Lets get this thread back on a mature path.

My last comment on this and it is because something really bugged me about Leg's comments and I knew I had seen old timetables whereby BOAC had called Prestwick - Glasgow Prestwick. Have a look at the link to the old BOAC timetable.

Now let's move on and start moving PIK forward with relevant news.

Agreed it gave me a good laugh to read on arriving at the airport this morning for work.

Oh dear, worrying that someone within the industry knows so little about the way things are done. But as you have decided to be churlish and there seems to be some sort of daft and rather childish argument over names... I attach an link to an image from 1987..some years before Ryanair flew from PIK, whilst it was still under BAA ownership...enough said really.

Highland Express Airways

However lets go slightly further back to 1970 - Aprox 14 years before Ryanair had even be thought of...Air Canada

http://www.timetableimages.com/ttimages/ac/ac70.pdf

But mhhh should I leave it at that...Nope I feel I should go back before even the current terminal was built..how about the 1950's?????

http://www.timetableimages.com/ttima...58/ba58-03.jpg

Now can we get back to a constructive discussion on developing aviation at PIK

Groundloop 28th October 2013 10:51

Love that the BOAC timetable linked above also served Manchester/Liverpool.

That could open a whole new can of worms!:ok:

ScotsSLF 28th October 2013 10:54

Ha Ha - nice one Groundloop - and just as I'm trying to get the thread serious again!;)

Tiger8 28th October 2013 22:49

At no point in my post did I say that I wanted the name changed, only that IT CANT CHANGE until such times as the current Ryanair contract expires.

VickersVicount 29th October 2013 16:23

You've seen the FR contract ?

No one said you did!

The airport name regardless can not and will not change from the official name of Glasgow Prestwick even if "Burns Intl" is added. It has nothing to do with any contract with Ryanair or any other party for that matter.

Does it really matter what the airport is called?

Joe Curry 29th October 2013 16:32

One wonders if we should still be calling these forums Professional Pilot Rumour Network?
