GLA never traded as Abbotsinch, it was "Glasgow Airport" from Day One, only needlessly changing to "Glasgow International" in around 1994 (?). I don't think anyone in Scotland ever really calls them anything other than Glasgow and Prestwick, although my Dad did maintain "Abbotsinch" and "Turnhouse" til his dying day. Localism rocks.

Err perhaps you should not make comments like that when you can easily be proved wrong. The designation of Glasgow Prestwick, was infact made several decades ago.

If you look at any of the marketing material, timetables etc etc etc you will see the airport has been Glasgow Prestwick for longer than Ryanair have been in business. Infact it would not be either the airport or any airline who decides on the city the airport is attached to. All you had to do was check your facts with the CAA before posting.

Oh leg if you're gonna be a smart alec, at least read all of at least one page first. It was BOAC and Trans Canada who began using Glasgow (Prestwick) just as British United used London (Gatwick). Better luck next time with the name calling.... I assume you're not a professional pilot either, with that sort of attention to detail, you'd never remember to lower the flaps before departing!

I doubt that there is anyone on this site who is not aware of the marketing benefits to airlines of prefixing Prestwick with Glasgow. To be fair, with the construction of the M77 it is not an arduous journey to the airport.

However, as far as the name of the airport is concerned, it surely is Prestwick, without the Glasgow prefix. After all, it is named as such on NATS AIS documents.

Personally, I've always wished it had been named after Ayr, the rather larger nearby town!

Just to clarify - it is IATA who designate the city an airport is attached to not the airlines. Hence the reason why on GDS systems and airline / airport systems worldwide if you type GLA which is the official CITY code for both PIK and GLA it returns with both airports. You see the same with London (using LGW as an example).

My last comment on this and it is because something really bugged me about Leg's comments and I knew I had seen old timetables whereby BOAC had called Prestwick - Glasgow Prestwick. Have a look at the link to the old BOAC timetable.

At no point in my post did I say that I wanted the name changed, only that IT CANT CHANGE until such times as the current Ryanair contract expires.

The airport name regardless can not and will not change from the official name of Glasgow Prestwick even if "Burns Intl" is added. It has nothing to do with any contract with Ryanair or any other party for that matter.

Does it really matter what the airport is called?
