Is this for real? A DEER on the airfield, in AYRSHIRE? In twenty odd years I'm not sure I ever clapped eyes on one.

How did it get over the razor wire?

Ayrshire is crawling with deer, not the first time I`ve seen one on the field at PIK, one wanders where the BDU guy was........

I remember this happening to me a few years back on a flybe flight into BRS had to do a go around as a deer had popped onto the runway. It isn't just birds that are a hazard all sorts of animals. Squashed rabbit, foxes,badgers.

My house looks onto the runway at Prestwick and I have seen deer in the the triangular field behind Station Road and lower Main Street Monkton. They are very well camouflaged especially as the field hasn't been cultivated for years and the grass and scrub is growing long and wild. Maybe now the airport would consider getting the field cleared as a safety issue?

How they get over the fence I have no idea.

Ive seen them at the runway mid-point, they seem to come from the tree area between apron F and fire station

It was on page two of the Ayrshire Post! So it does exist, seen it with my own eyes.......let`s wait out then. Infratil denying at the moment, but they would until set in stone. American/Canadian sounds promising...Apparently there was painting going on in the terminal today.

Yes, I have seen many deer on Prestwick St Cuthberts golf course that backs on to runway 21/03. They probably go under the fence rather than over although deer can jump incredible heights.

My friend hit a deer this morning on the A77 and I saw a dead one at the side of the road on the A77 the other day. Scotland is crawling with deer and an official cull to control their numbers is likely soon.

Incidentally if a deer is found within the boundary fence at PIK or indeed any other airfield the directive is to get a suitably qualified and licensed person out to shoot it rather than capturing it and releasing it back to the wild. Don't want o take the chance of it returning again.

Reading in the Ayrshire post, the Scottish government are pledging to develop Prestwick Airport in their key planning document. Holyrood have identified 14 projects to adopt over the coming years. Prestwick airport being one

National Planning Framework 3 - Main Issues Report and Draft Framework

This is the draft issue of the National Planning Framework 3. It follows on from NPF 2 where, nationally important infrastructure. At the moment it is being proposed that Prestwick becomes a key area of focus, not just the airport and airfield, but the enterprise zone around it. Which may make it more attractive to anyone (anyone?) Who may wish to purchase the airfield.

constructive comment? seems entirely realistic constructive outwith the local fanboi's. I certainly dont want my taxes bankrolliing a failing money sapping 80's relic which has shown no sign or likliehood of profit. Realism check please allround, no room for spotter nostalgia in this day and age

The only reason Prestwick Airport is not making a profit at the moment is because of Infratil's sheer inability to manage anything more than a girl guide jamboree. The airport made a profit prior to being taken over by Infratil.

CabinCrewe do you even know why they'd want to keep PIK open? Have you thought on the subject matter before you launched your latest exclamation from the Private Fraser school of negativity?

As has been explained already.
The airfield was a former public facility which has already had a lot of taxpayers money used to build it. It was sold after BAA went private and became consistently profitable allowing a mass of cargo imports and exports and opening up loco travel to Scotland. However recent mismanagement by the current semi detached owners led to the addition of a high cost base and lost some major customers. It has been proven that the operation is actually viable and profitable and there is an expectation things can be turned around. Seasonal though traffic remains, it is rising.

At a strategic level PIK is a semi military asset and the main diversion point for hijacked aircraft in this part of the country. Losing PIK would see more of our air cargo landing in England and trucked. There would be a loss of military airlift capability in time of war and the country would have no runway capable of handling long haul air cargo at all. It's not purely a matter of Ryanair and spotters regardless of how much fun being vitriolic can be.
