Slightly off topic - but Celtic and Rangers quote ''two of the world's biggest football clubs in the world'' - you are kidding aren't you! I suggest not even in the top 20 and both in dire financial straits! Excellent fan base but that is all. As for Glasgow being a world-class city may I suggest you travel a bit more Random Flyer.
I don't know if you are Scottish - probably are - so like a lot of your fellow countrymen may I suggest you take that bag of potatoes off your shoulder which unfortunately a lot of your compatriots seem to carry around with them and that is coming from a Yorkshireman but at least we laugh at ourselves.

Tongue in cheek or not, the comment was completely inaccurate so I see no place for it. For some season people love to knock Glasgow and paint some image of the city that its dirty, full of scum and in general a horrible place to be. In reality; that couldnt be further from the truth.

I do allot of travelling, multiple flights per week globally and Glasgow is always one of my favourite places to visit. Luckily for me I end-up there regularly.

As for the picture. Excellent stuff! A passionate football match with fans making allot of noise and an incredible atmosphere. Give me a ticket to an Old Firm game any day of the week over an English Premiership match where you can hear a pin drop.

Thousands of people visit Glasgow every year because of the draw of the big two. Just look at the huge fan bases these clubs have all over the UK, Ireland, Spain, Germany, Eastern Europe (particularly Poland), Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

Manchester United has a similar fan base and everyone agrees that's great for Manchester. TWO clubs from Glasgow have this and people knock it. Like I said, people just love to unjustifiably put Glasgow down.

Indeed but Glasgow is not the only place where this happens. I've heard allot of things at Portsmouth and West Ham matches that I wont repeat on here. But again, that's not Glasgow so we wont bother slagging off London and Portsmouth for that.

This thread is about an airport trying to improve its lot - not about football - give us a break, grow up and get back on track. Good to see the increases in the summer flights - PIK needs to get its winter programme sorted though as the place was pretty quiet this winter regards PAX flights.

Glasgow is one of Britains best cities, so I feel sorry for the rest of this country if you consider Glasgow a dump.

Well if we're talking about airports, its what the visitors see thats important and the center of Glasgow is World Class. Fact!

Glasgow is one of the most connected cities in the UK, at its peak only London and Manchester handled more traffic. The city is one of only 4 in the UK to have direct access to four continents, the others being London, Manchester and Birmingham.

As for business traffic, yet again I bet only London and Manchester offer more.

I've said it before and will say it again. People just love to knock Glasgow, which doesn't help Glasgow Prestwick Airport, nor Glasgow International. If a crime happens in city "A" its swept under the carpet and nobody talks about it. If it happens in Glasgow its likely to be top news.

If your from Glasgow then stop being so bl**dy negative about it!! Take pride in your city and promote the good things the city does have to offer. Every city in the world has its bad points, but for some reason people like to portray an image that Glasgow's bad points are worse than everywhere else and its good points are non-existant.

Glasgow is the third biggest city in Britain, it is home to two of the biggest football clubs in the world and the Scotland national team, Glasgow hosts more major conferences and events than any other city in the UK outside London, the city is home to many huge financial institutions such as HSBC, Direct Line, Santander, RBS, HBOS and many more, it has a buzzing nightlife 7 nights a week, it has the best shopping in the UK outside London, it is home to Europe's largest comedy festival, its the Economic Powerhouse of Scotland, its home to Scotland's most visited art gallery and museum, along with 30 plus other galleries in the city.

Hotel companies are investing in the city left right and centre, including Jumeirah with a 6* hotel, Hilton planning their third hotel in city, Crowne Plaza are planning their second 5* hotel for the city. There is a new National Area under constriction designed by Sir Norman Foster, it has a new Transport museum under construction designed by Zaha Hadid and the city will host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The city has two international airports, Scotland's two busiest train stations, the only city in the UK with an underground network outside London as well as a massive urban rail network and so much more and as if that isn't enough Glasgow is a previous European Capital of Culture, previous European Capital of Sport, previous European Capital of Light.

Just about every city in Britain would give an arm and a leg to be in Glasgow's position to don't give me "Glasgow's a !!!!hole" because that is simply BS.

Glasgow has more to be proud of than most places in Europe, its about time people in Scotland acknowledge that fact.

The quote "Glasgow IS a dump" smacks of someone who panders to the stereotypes, yes, there are some grim areas of the city, but then again there are some crap areas of all cities. And to the comment about neds on the Costas, then are all English people abroad are beer swilling hooligans? No. They're not, not all Scots are are old firm supporting neds who spew the vile sectarian rantings! I'm Glaswegian and I support the mighty Queens Park (not QPR).

I don't want to offend anybody here as I'm still a newbie to these forums and I do like reading everyones points of view, whether I agree with them or not. I just felt I had to give my home city a little defence!

Undoubtedly Glasgow has some problems (which are not uncommon in most other UK cities), but as RF states, albeit slightly inaccurately and overenthusiastically, the city has made great strides in the last 20 years and I'm sure will continue to do so in the next 20. To describe the place as a dump etc is totally inaccurate. Apart for anything else, if things are to improve further such silly and ill-informed comments do nothing to help and are of no use to anybody.

Aside from that, 90% of this has nothing to do with PIK (or GLA for that matter).

Im not sure I like the tone. Please read the previous posts rather than just skimming and you will see the relevance. If you dont realise that high class hotel accommodation local to what I can only presume is your local airport then you dont understand the travel and leisure industry at all.

The ability to attract the amount of wealth needed to make a business case for a 6* Hotel is interesting, hotels are in the travel business, Prestwick is marketed as Glasgow-Prestwick. On the face of it there ought to be even a tenuous link, however given PIK's demographics and target market, there isn't.

Unless they called it "The Orangefield Hotel" and attach a golf course! They should really try that....

New summer route.
 

According to the airport website (and the giant banner displayed on the walkway over the A79 between the airport station and terminal) Prestwick has secured a route to Madeira.

The press release states that the route will operate 3 times in July and is operated by Monarch.

Not exactly a massive boost, but anything extra is a bonus, I suppose!

Anything new from this mob isalways welcome

Its only 3 flights in July ,4th, 11th and 18th

And for what it's worth, PIK will be picking up a little revenue from the ex Polar hangar, with the 2 diverted F16s in there for a couple of days, and now a batch of Ryanair 737s being removed from service and prepared for onward delivery.
