Top airlines at EDI
Hi,
In 2009, Easyjet had a pretty hefty lead at EDI, however I expect that Ryanair will have closed the gap during 2010: http://www.baa.com/assets/Internet/B...lines_2009.pdf |

|
Thanks for the stats Anna
I am to wallow in some numbers for a few hours. Awesome when you know where to look ! Surprising to me but I'd rather be corrected and get the actual numbers any day.
Cheers |

Looks like the promised Middle East direct flight has risen it's head again..this time with a different player.
First air link to Middle East winging its way to Capital - Scotsman.com |
Its undoubtedly going to be Etihad, and not QR/EK. Letts look at the evidence:
EK have literally today tied themselfs up at MAN, by being forced into adding capacity at MAN 4 months before they actually wanted to (May instead of Sept), so their fleet is under a lot of strain this summer. So, its not them. The article states UAE link, so its not Qatar, and like EK, they have pretty much tied up their fleet this summer with added Germany frequencies. Also, it was always widely believed they would add EDI beofre a second MAN, that chance has now been and gone, so its not them. Etihad, however, have just added double daily MAN, so are in the mood for expansion. Also, a recent article states they are looking into another 'western Europe' destination, so, EDI anyone?... |
When you declare :
Its undoubtedly going to be Etihad, THE first direct link between Edinburgh and the Middle East could be established within a year, while festival chiefs have set up a partnership with a new event in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it emerged today. |
Thats Scotsman forum is a real melting pot, that Bragger fellow seems to be making a bit of a spectacle- looking at some of the other EDI posts on there ! Hasnt there been rumours of a route for ages now and nothing has come of it ? Given all the UK expansion elsewhere, id be surprised if we saw anymore anytime soon. Looks as if ABZ has jumped the gun with the next Middle East route ! What about all the stuff about EDI not being able to cope with widebodies, paving or something, what became of that ?
|
I think you're getting ahead of yourself. Read the article Also, based on the fact EK havent stated anything, yet EY have specifically stated a new western Europe destination, leads me to that conclusion. Also, EK are expected to up GLA over the next financial year, so its pbvious their Scotland resources will be tied up there. |
This is an article about potential talks for a potential route. Which frankly means less than nothing.
I wouldn't start thinking about buying tickets based on that. |
What about all the stuff about EDI not being able to cope with widebodies, paving or something, what became of that? In the short term, and assuming that a suitable stand could be created on the main apron, then the PCNs at EDI shouldn't have any problem supporting A330 operations to the Middle East. The ACN of this aircraft, even at MTOW, only marginally exceeds the PCN of the main apron and, in any case, A330 flights to the Middle East wouldn't require MTOW departures. International arrivals and departures facilities might be challenged by such flights but it depends on the arrival and departure times. B773ER operations are more of a problem for EDI as the ACN of this aircraft is significantly higher than many other long-haul types. If it had to operate at ACN</=PCN then the payload/range reduction would make flights to the Middle East uneconomic. If a 10% ACN>PCN overload were sanctioned then the economics improve but are still less than ideal. PCNs at Glasgow and Newcastle are better suited to B773ER operations than are the PCNs at Edinburgh. So, in summary, EDI has lower PCNs than most other major airports in the UK, but long range widebody flights should still be possible from main apron stands (if available) using various wide-bodied aircraft types. Some have greater payload/range restrictions than others. The best suited are higher power versions of the B763ER and variants of the A330. The types least suited to EDI’s PCNs are the B773ER and B772LR. |
