Doesn’t Luton have a short concrete over run area at the 08 end? Anyone know how far the aircraft over run the runway by?

The reasons for the displaced threshold is lost in the mists of time. I seem to remember it had something to do with trees in the rwy 26 undershoot, long since gone. No one is going to move an ILS glide path with all the associated costs these days as landing distance is no longer a problem since the end of DC8s on wet runways. :)

Let's not post snippets of RT-derived information here. There is always the Wireless Telegraphy Act. ;)

vintage ATCO 5th February 2006 21:13

There is a 61m stopway on runway 26 which forms part of the accelerate-stop distance for that runway. It is really there for a discontinued take-off but it is available for allcomers. :)

What snippits of RT_ Photos please

Still hoping to see some pics. Nothing on the local TV or Radio of interest either. It must be sunday.

As to RT snippits, the general level of incompetence is obvious even without the RT.

As the runway is closed for all practical purposes, why not continue the scheduled closure, make hay etc, etc.

And what level of incompetence is that, Bumz? Be sure to include your qualifications in the reply.

I quote Bumz Rush: "As to RT snippits, the general level of incompetence is obvious even without the RT."

Luton ATC are incompetent. Sack the lot and bring in competant ones!

Well Mr, you certainly were in a Rush to stick you head up your own...Arsenal, were they delayed or diverted?

Try typing with furry paws!

No 'compo' for the unfortunate passengers I suspect as this was outside the control of their airline?

Well at 2350 said offending german aeroplane got pushed into Air Harrods hangars. And then the flood opended real quick with incoming A/C.
Airport looked really abandonded without all those 737's.

If it was such a meal shifting a little Challenger seeing it hasn’t rained for weeks I do wonder how long it would have taken to shift say a DHL Airbus after 3 days of rain. Now thinking caps on, when and what was the last aircraft to over run the runway at Luton?

The only one I can think of was 32 years ago. http://aviation-safety.net/database/...?id=19740303-0

There was the Jetstar in 1981 http://aviation-safety.net/database/...?id=19810329-1

Previous Overruns

Can't remember the date, but there was the Phoenix (Swiss charter outfit) 707 that did the same as the Challenger and went off of the end of "26" .... the Dc-7 and Jetstar went off of the end of "08".

The 707 incident happened during the winter but I'm sure it didn't take 11 hours to shift it, unlike the Challenger.

VIKING9 6th February 2006 11:57

The Jetstar went off at the 26 end heading towards Hertfordshire ! If he'd gone off the 08 end, he could had lunch in Vauxhall......

OLNEY 1 BRAVO 6th February 2006 12:16

For the avoidance of doubt I meant that the Jetstar and DC-7 went off of the far end of runway "08" ..... which is the threshold of "26".

The Phoenix 707 did overrun "26" (or "08" threshold) but did not end up in Vauxhalls.

phnuff 6th February 2006 12:21

"If he'd gone off the 08 end, he could had lunch in Vauxhall......"

If it was still there . . . . !!!

Of course, had he got it really wrong and added a slight left turn, he could have even had lunch at the Fox at Darley Hall .

It was almost 24 hours to move the B707. ;)

Thanks Vintage ... I was probably still in short trousers at the time and my recollections are very hazy.:=

So what happened, why did ABCD end up in the mud?

Talk of landing long....too fast.......What actually happened, any 'eye witnesses' out there? The path to my 'bear palace' was noticeably slippery on Sunday, was there a climatic reason for this?

I am sure that if it took a good while to move the Challenger, AAIB MUST have had good reason to delay its release for recovery? In todays compensation culture, the AAIB must be clear of the facts and ensure any evidence is securely recorded. Once 'released', did the airport delay its recovery?

Rumours from the orange 'shrink wrapped' land, of Ryanair check in/customer services, shutting up shop on Sunday afternoon, leaving folk totally in the lurch? Fact or propaganda?

Good service

Interesting to see EZY pulling out the stops yesterday to clear their pax backlog. 2 A319s brought in from GVA and STN, and a MYT 767 chartered. Hopefully (but unlikely) the pax will appreciate the expense involved when EZY weren't to blame for the problem.
