If the airport has to rely on Atmosphere, then SEN must really be in trouble

SWBKCB 7th Nov 2021 06:22

No - an Atmosphere spokesman refers to the airline - not an airport one.

One of these could be industry newbies Atmosphere Airlines, who have announced its intention to set up a base at the airport. The Echo revealed earlier this year how the Essex-based airline was willing to work with the airport chiefs to tie up a deal. A spokesman said: “Atmosphere Airlines confirms its intentions to set up and launch a European base from ⁦London Southend Airport. As a new airline we are pleased to announce our intent to operate flights to several European destinations from the 2022 season.”

Maybe they should get Russ Abbot on board having a hit with 'Atmosphere' in 1985. For those who do not know who he is, Russ is an actor and comedian, enough said.

Yes, it’s all a good laugh brought about by a local journalist who cobbled together scraps from back in the Spring and decided to put out this rubbish because he had a minute to cut and paste something together to keep his airport stories going.

So let’s stick statements together from the airport about S2022 and fantasy from Atmosphere and we have something to publish on line.

I have never read any statement from the airport about Atmosphere and would never expect to do so.

Not sure why this is solely being discussed here. The main bases for Atmosphere will be STN & MAN.

Sorry LTNman, seems like you are going to miss out.

LTNman 7th Nov 2021 15:17

Yes I did indeed attribute the quotation to an airport spokesman in error. It gets discussed here because it is the local newspaper that mentions the airline. Good to read there have been no redundancies but what are the workers doing instead that keeps them employed?

Anybody for FlyBe 2 as the next airline to operate into SEN (not based)?

ATNotts 8th Nov 2021 11:38

If they don't want to find themselves pretty quickly having to morph into "FlyBe 3" not a hope in hell!

A spokesman said: “Atmosphere Airlines confirms its intentions to set up and launch a European base from ⁦London Southend Airport.
Didn't the same paper run a similar story a few months ago? For "The Echo" to be regurgitating such nonsensical drivel devalues the publication which, though I have never read it, I would imagine is or at least was the organ of choice for local news in and around Southend.

JSCL 8th Nov 2021 11:43

Cyrus do own a decent chunk of Southends owner though...

No wont happen.
Looking like BHX base initially.

ATNotts 8th Nov 2021 12:59

There's clearly no guarantee that they'll make routes from a major city work; how they could expect to get the right yields on any business or leisure routes from SEN - or indeed places such as Teesside, Humberside, Carlisle, Newquay, Norwich or any other third tier airports is quite hard to fathom.

ATNotts

Believe me that paper is the lowest of the low, journalism is appalling, only this afternoon they published an online article to the effect of "terrible news for friends and family" only for it not to be attached to any story so people were left guessing as to what it was referring to!

davidjohnson6 9th Nov 2021 14:36

Every local newspaper in the UK is on a bare bones budget. Ambitious journalists generally want to work somewhere national instead. It's not really reasonable to expect a lot of the Echo or any other local paper

Pain in the R's 9th Nov 2021 16:05

Remarkable how the UK’s fastest growing airport has lost 100% of its passengers to become the UK’s worst performing airport. Just shows how precarious the airports business model was.

DC3 Dave 9th Nov 2021 16:23

I think Covid may have been a factor - you don’t mention it - but there certainly were matters that they had some control over that people are free to judge for themselves.

Still building back better seems all the rage nowadays, so let’s see what happens.

Interesting that Amazon still don't want to be associated with the flights. I wonder why?

Good to hear from Glyn Jones after quite a while.

I keep hoping that S2022 will prove that there’s life in this airport yet. But I suspect that if nothing is announced soon, another year will pass without major development, by which time SEN will have passed any significant airlines’ need outside their core activity.
