Singapore were doing an incredible job at the start and if more countries had done what they did we might not be in this mess now

Were is the word. Unfortunately like most wealthy nations they rely on a lot of immigrant labour who live in dormitories where social distancing is impossible. Hence the recent explosion in cases.

Government advising that people should not be booking foreign holidays.

SWBKCB 17th Apr 2020 14:58

Think this is what LTNman is referring to - an interview with Transport Minister Grant Shapps:

Speaking to Radio Four's Today programme, Mr Shapps said: "On the travel advice – should you book your holidays? – clearly people will want to see what the trajectory of this disease is in the next few weeks. I won't be booking a summer holiday at this point, let's put it that way."
Coronavirus: Grant Shapps branded 'thoughtless' after warning families not to book a summer holiday during outbreak

HZ123 17th Apr 2020 15:12

Why does the general populous have no imagination of their own? If there is no likelihood of resolution in the next 3 months, which there is not, summer will have passed us by. Most of us will have already had a couple of months holiday, now!

Pistonprop 17th Apr 2020 21:08

Well, I certainly won't be booking a holiday or a few days away for some time to come. In fact, I have written off 2020 as a travel year. Just not worth the risk as things stand at present.

The only people who will be travelling will be folk visiting family, students & business people. For sure business people will be much less as their all using Zoom now. That's another nail in the airline industries coffin.

Asturias56 18th Apr 2020 08:43

we're already plotting how to resume our holiday travels - fills in the time at home. clearly it will have to be flexible and changeable at short notice - with alternative routes out in case an intermediate stop closes down suddenly - so more expensive but still fun

This from the Government who has screwed up the Coronavirus issue pretty much since the start, wrong actions, wrong diagnosis, insufficient equipment and the list goes on even now with wrong treatment seemingly to the one rearing its head.

Government advice should come with a major health warning. The spin is that they use the word "advise" rather than "telling" as it makes it less compulsory.

The "Government is always right in telling us what to do" seems to be the mantra of many people today. It is strange that 40 years ago this was the same viewpoint decried by the west against people in USSR / China who were saying the same thing.

:ok:

The world hasn't stopped living. This will be overcome and if you don't look forward for the future then when it comes people will be left floundering as the tide ebbs away.

Many people at the moment will see coming into the office for a couple of weeks as a holiday. It sounds crazy but coming across a lot of people who now in week 4 of WFH, people have seen their furniture, rooms, walls, lack of decor etc. Many want to get back into the office to socialise, chat to people face to face, sit across the table at lunch with colleagues.

WFH has many positive sides but it can also be a prison just like 365 holidays a year can be also.

Now we know what the word 'Freedom' means.
Remember when Soviet dissidents were placed under 'house arrest'... think that on a global scale.
We all crave the freedom to travel again, it's just not going to be as easy for.. well maybe a year or so

I for one disagree. Zoom and all the other visual virtual marketing tools are no replacement for actually meeting people and doing deals face to face. Its one thing to have a chat with your parents or children over Zoom, quite another to conduct professional business. You simply don't get a feel for what the other people are thinking or exactly how they are reacting. Humans are designed for human contact.

correct, everyone said travel was dead after 9/11 and that people would stop traveling and use video conferencing.
  • People do business with other people .... sales presentations are made in person not via Zoom.
  • Audits of supply chains are done in Person not via Zoom.
  • Manages with international responsibilities need to visit their teams.
  • Industry conferences are not done by Zoom.
clearly less people are going to travel for a while and people are going to be frightened to travel for a while .....but international travel will recover in time

Issue at moment for those in work is that Zoomers are at home all day, bored as Fcuk and arranging lots of meetings on zoom to keep themelves occupied, those in work needing to do day job find everybody wants a meeting on zoom and best thing to do is shut it down for a couple of hours a day.

While mentioning Zoom I avoid it like the plague (mmm maybe not best choice of words) and use the MS version and only at work. Zoom Bombing and their willingness to sell your data to whomever means yup it is fashionable but maybe not a risk I want.

Other VC software is available. It's just that Z**m seems very easy for the novice to use. I've been attending meetings by VC for over 10 years. You can put up presentations for every site to see. If your time is valuable, you really have to price the value added by being out of your office for days or weeks, never mind the carbon footprint of that business class seat.

I agree that some things, such as auditing the behaviour of your suppliers, can only be done in person. No point in telling your customers about the high labour standards of your factory in Bangladesh unless you can drop in unannounced.

Yeah I know, became a Skype adopter in its 1st year because someone sent me an email accidentally. Still got same account.

I only went on to whatsapp recently because of this and with great reluctance, let's no go near the cloud as won't touch, everybody tells me putting it in control of someone else is perfectly safe.

I can tell you - as someone who used Zoom before this - I only used Zoom for meetings I didn’t care too much for.

Anything important, was and always will be face to face.

How about all the companies around the world that never used multiple person video conferencing apps before the pandemic, but are now using them all the time? Companies will need to cost save in the coming years and a perfect way to cut costs is not to fly. Of course lots of meetings must be face to face but talking to my own boss last week he thinks our company may start to do a lot of face to face meetings using Zoom as it's worked very well so far.
