On the basis they are suggesting even those who are vaccinated can still carry the virus and infect others, the potential here is that no one will be able to travel for a few years without a test in the UK prior to departure and a test overseas prior to return.

That in itself present hurdles that the majority of people will not bother with (eg minimum £100 per pax at each end for testing, time away from work/school for testing, risk of finding out one of you is positive the day before travel, what then happens to the flights/holiday? risk of finding out you're positive the day before returning, meaning local quarantine for 14 days, costs associated with that).

The trouble is, it demonstrates the Vaccine will significantly reduce those taken seriously ill (between 70 and 90%) but it will not necessarily provide a route back to what we considered to be a normal life. The vaccine of course only protects the person who has had it, thus the important thing to any country will be whether that person is carrying it. In a way Spain largely don't care if you as the visitor are at risk, they care if you are bringing the current or any future mutations into their country. So the vaccination passport sort of become pointless.

Ryanair new aircraft will start arriving en mass in 2024, thereby you have had to build up demand in 2023 and a smaller than 2019 but normalish summer season in 2022.

Govt restrictions are only as good if people obey them.

LGS6753 25th Jan 2021 16:21

Helipixman - I don't share your pessimism. My feeling is that there will be a limited return to travel this summer, but with severe constraints.
Such as:
having proof of vaccination
only to specific countries/regions
possibly requiring quarantine on return

I certainly hope this is the case for the sake of those whose livelihoods depend on it.

British Wizz did not get a penny as it went to the Wizz holding company as they trade on the stock exchange. The Wizz group benefited by paying off loans that were replaced with cheap U.K. money.

Money was lent to UK Ltd company NOT to an overseas entity. What Wizzair UK Ltd do with that cash is up to then but UK Govt will lend to UK entity first as lending to Hungarian based company they have zero recourse for repayment.

LTNman 25th Jan 2021 16:36

So you think the government handed over the equivalent of £30m per aircraft to Wizz U.K. yeah right. This was established here months ago that the money went to the parent company.

If it was true then who is complaining about support to U.K. aviation.

TimmyW 25th Jan 2021 16:48

No international travel for twelve months is what is being peddled by the Mail.

How many airlines and airports will still be operating in the UK come then.

I completely agree with you and hope it does get back to some kind of normal. Are the Government/NHS going to give people a Vaccination passport ? I remember back in the sixties getting vaccinations and my passport was stamped ! Then if the UK are going to require some form of Quarantine on return from holiday, what if the country you are travelling to do the same - will it be worth going, then add in the probable tests/costs also required for entry. Not much will be going in favour of the travel industry and how much help will they get ? Personally I have stood by TUI and they have been good with my booking and I do not want a refund, willing to leave my money with them hoping they survive and I can travel, 2021 maybe 2022 maybe who knows ?

Stay safe everyone and hope we can all travel soon and get the Industry back on its feet.

UK Govt would have paid money into UK bank account held by Wizzair UK Ltd. Security would have been a cross company guarantee by Wizzair Holding company and a floating charge on asserts. Bank accoun controlled by Treasury where they located but paying it into UK bank account means UK Govt would have a call first against bank account and secondly against the guarantee. Ultimarely AOC is the security UK have.

LTNman 25th Jan 2021 17:35

The money still ended up in Hungary to support the parent company. https://www.headforpoints.com/2020/0...nment-bailout/

PinOnTheRight 25th Jan 2021 18:11

And the parent company likely meets the requirements of ''the company generates significant revenues in the UK, serves a large number of customers in the UK or has a number of operating sites in the UK. ''

LTNman 25th Jan 2021 22:09

It got the money as it traded on the London Stock Exchange not because of its U.K. operation. If that is untrue please provide the evidence rather than putting forward an opinion. Virgin by the way did not get a penny despite its U.K. operations and being a British airline

Yeehaw22 25th Jan 2021 22:34

That's because virgin were loss making. Would you lend your money to a company that were making losses before covid reared its head.?

DC3 Dave 26th Jan 2021 11:01

So despite the so far impressive roll out of the vaccine government advice is not to book a foreign holiday this summer.

There’s clearly no vaccination certification scheme and leisure travel will remain a no-no until Covid figures come down to an acceptable risk level (whatever that is).

So this summer will see no more than green shoots at best.

Maybe winter demand will surprise us all.

I'm reading Brits advised not to book summer holidays as new quarantine hotels set to be introduced via the Standard app

If the story is in the Mail it's highly dubious for all sorts of reasons.

Once the vaccines have been rolled out for the vulnerable proportion of the population I can see lockdown measures being lifted gradually, probably from early April. I suspect that subject to a vaccination certification process being in place (Spain and Greece are pushing heavily for this) there is a good chance that services within Europe will resume from Easter. It will not be full throttle but we will have a summer season and it will be the start of the recovery. I think there are good reasons to be optimistic.

GA F15 26th Jan 2021 12:14

I think proof that a vaccinated person can’t transmit the virus will be the game changer.

davidjohnson6 26th Jan 2021 12:24

Proof would be great, but AFAIK there isn't even reasonably good circumstantial evidence that any of the main vaccines lead to non-transmission. At the moment, we have only plausible theories
We're a long way from having the science to show what the aviation industry would like to believe

helipixman 26th Jan 2021 12:41

Totally Agree !

Until that is the case all Countries will be over cautious. I think the UK Government are making an announcement today about international travel and the ongoing need for Quarantine hotels ? Advisers are saying nobody should be booking summer holidays - just another nail in the Leisure/Travel industries coffin.

I know in the early days of the pandemic we were told that the virus was not affected by hot or cold ? Well it seems to thrive in the winter months. Seems like it is going to be similar to the Flu, maybe we just have to live with it in the winter and let summers go ahead as we all really want. Think it is here to stay, flu has never completely gone away and we all live with that ?

Does anyone else think it is time to live and let live and just put up with it ? I say that because if 50,000 plus are seemingly getting infected each day according to UK Government statistics, not all 50,000 of those daily infections are ending up in hospital. Our travel industry needs help and needs to SURVIVE and all those employed in it.

DaveReidUK 26th Jan 2021 12:57

It may well turn out never to be the case.

Meanwhile the ABTA chief, an expert in his field, is saying it is too early for politicians to make a call on summer holidays.

I'll stick to the advice coming from the people who know their field, rather then the likes of Matt Hancock, Grant Shapps et al.
