I can't really see the need for a direct London to Malmo link.
The direct slow train from Malmo city centre to Copenhagen airport takes 35 mins and the fast train a mere 20 mins. My brother in law often visits his brother in Malmo and he flies to Copenhagen Airport and takes the trip over the Orseund Bridge either by public transport or hire car. I should imagine that there are a lot of passengers originating from the Malmo area on the Swedish side using CPH. |
Malmo Airport is actually some way west of the city so to an extent has its own local catchment. Whether that is enough to sustain a London service is questionable.
Malmo was both an early LCY destination and one of Ryanair’s first European destinations but that was now sometime in the past and before the bridge came along. |

If my memory serves me correctly the now defunct Maersk Air used to run a service from Billund to Southend using Dash 7 and occasionally, when the load warranted it, putting on a 737. I may be wrong but I always thought that this route was quite successful. I heard, when the service was withdrawn, that Maersk blamed the council (the then operators) as they were full of promises about forthcoming improvements to the airport but nothing ever happened. If it is believed that Scandinavia could be a viable proposition for SEN would this not be a route for Stobart/Flybe to consider?

I think FR were still flying to MMX about 5 years ago. Certainly I flew that route about then. It was an easy 30 minute bus ride to central malmo - a very nice city by the way. Wizz have a decent presence at the airport but I doubt they'd start a route from LTN never mind SEN.

Changes in European Community rules in 1984 allowed any carrier to operate intra-European routes, granted that they connected two regional airports. Maersk laid its eyes on Billund Airport, which was centrally located in Jutland and was classified as a regional airport. It was already a popular base for charter flights. London was a favored destinations, but all the four primary airports were all categorized as primary airports. To exploit the new regulations, Maersk identified London Southend Airport, which was classified as a secondary airport. Maersk inaugurated the route on 29 November 1984 with two round trips, using Dash 7s. Due to the distance from the city Maersk could only market it as "London" if they included an onwards ticket with a train. The route carried about 12,000 passengers annually and failed to make a profit |
It's not unusual to see Billind on the arrivals board at SEN, the BACF (Sun Air) service has been diverted from LCY on a number of occasions. I believe a Dornier 328 is used, which kind of tells you all about the demand. Nothing wrong with servicing limited demand in the right aircraft, but limited it surely is.

Billund is served twice daily by BA from LHR and once/twice daily by FR from STN.

British Airways Sun Air serves both LCY and MAN to BLL up to 3 daily each on some days. While the aircraft is small, the yield is said to be amazing.

My recollection of the Maersk services to SEN was that they were established and doing good loads in the later years of the service. From Dash 7's they went to FK-50's, and they wanted to provide more capacity with B737. This would have been restrictive from the then SEN runway in some conditions. A few B737 flights operated from SEN at the end, when they transferred the whole operation to LGW.

No, it's almost as short a hop to Billund as Manston! It was more wet runway performance I expect. Of course with the new SIA station right next to the terminal, as opposed to a bus transfer to from Rochford in the Maersk days, the Billund could work a lot better today if they ever get fed-up of the high charges at LCY.

Which brings me neatly on to this: IAG will be watching the possible Stobart offer for Flybe with some interest, given the former are almost family. I suspect privately they would be supportive, given the potential for friendly nods and winks to the benefit of both.

G-JOTR/ENZ930 has recently departed from the Business Terminal at STN with a destination shown as CWL.(Perhaps rugby related charter).
A/C positioned in from SEN earlier. "Enzo`s" tho are a common feature thru STN at w/ends. |
