As for Northern Europe, there is no route to Hamburg from STN or LCY so that could be a good shout, other previous guesses of mine were Kristiansand and Paderborn.

FlyNonstop managed only to scrape together 8,467 passengers the around six months they flew KRS-LCY before they went bust. My advice to Stobart would be: Don't even think about it.


The three larger Norwegian airports could be something for them and all three have flights only to Gatwick and Heathrow and with that no coverage to the north and east of London. The three airports are:


OSL (Oslo Airport, Gardermoen)
1,014,434 passengers to London in 2013 = 37% of all passengers between Norway and the UK
The passenger numbers grew with 8% from 2012.


BGO (Bergen Airport, Flesland)
308,809 passengers to London in 2013 = 11% of all passengers between Norway and the UK
The passenger numbers grew with 52% from 2012.



SVG (Stavanger Airport, Sola)
284,450 passengers to London in 2013 = 10% of all passengers between Norway and the UK
The passenger numbers grew with 24% from 2012.


As a reference: one daily return trip for a 72 seat ATR72-600 equals to 52,560 seats to fill in a year and 5 weekly flights generate 37,543 seats to fill in a year.

Easyjet have stated publicly they intend to release seats for winter 2014-15 in early April. Seats for June 2014 were released almost 7 months ago.
Stobart Air are planning to release seats for June 2014 in early April. The commercial opportunities of 2 UK bank holiday weekends in May will not be available to the new airline. As of late March, details of destinations / schedules are yet to be released.

I know 2 months lead time ain't bad, but it all seems a bit tight

If these are likely to be new destinations flybe/stobart will surely want feed ? Perhaps Manchester ? As its a large flybe base ?

Aer Arran name rebranded to Stobart Air but keeping the livery.

Of course it maybe to tap into the Stobart fan club. At one time was it not the profit from the fan club that kept the company solvent. Maybe one air frame may get Stobart logos for the charter market and used for football or rugby teams.......

Not a good start for StobartAir, which was created to boost passenger numbers at Stobarts own Southend on Sea airport. The new Cologne service which has been taking bookings for less than a week has already been dropped due to competition from a new service from Stansted.

Just wondering - is it common practice in the industry that an airport supports a fully fledged route launch while it is in the final stages of negotiating a competing route - a route that undoubtedly will kill off the just released other route and leave an airline customer with a serious amount of egg in the face?
