...and its often the definition of 'direct' comes into question so they may be meaning new connection opportunities. There isnt a hope of SFO direct from BHX

groundhogbhx 29th Mar 2015 10:43

Why is there no hope of SFO out of BHX?

CabinCrewe 29th Mar 2015 12:35

theyre only just getting a regular JFK on a narrowbody to the largest city in US. SFO is one of the smallest and would need a larger capacity widebody. Whis going to operate it? Whos going to operate SFO from BHX before MAN, who is going to ignore MIA, LAX, IAD, ORD, PHL, MCO etc etc and launch SFO?

787Heaven 29th Mar 2015 13:18

Have I completely mis read splash&dash's post, I thought the Toronto and San Francisco rumours relate to an extension of Air India's services?

And as for only just getting a service to JFK have you forgotten about United/continental flying to Newark for the lat 22 years?

Skipness One Echo 29th Mar 2015 14:20

Unless it's a Thomas Cook charter or Air India having another "moment", then SFO is not likely. Only United hub there and they're not gonna cannibalise an under pressure EWR to launch a BHX-SFO. Social media is fun but often factually nonsensical.

hammerb32 29th Mar 2015 14:28

San Francisco much like Toronto and Birmingham has a very large Sikh community who I'm sure would enjoy the connection to Amritsar that an extension would provide, whether it would be viable is another question but from a vfr market point of view linking SFO and BHX makes a degree of sense.

LAX_LHR 29th Mar 2015 14:34

We need to remember that any Air India flight would not be about the BHX-SFO market, it would be about DEL-SFO with a stop over at BHX.

Therefore, not the most ridiculous idea around. And even if BHX-SFO is far fetched, don't forget, this is Air India we are talking about, making money is just an afterthought.

Air India

It seems we are all making judgements on an unnamed media post. Would it not be better if Splash&Dash told us where this post is. Maybe then we would all have a better understanding of what is being suggested

Exactly. it's just a shame so much store it placed on it these days.

That would be good.

LNIDA 29th Mar 2015 16:49

I guess a weekly service with Norwegian wouldn't be difficult to slot in, probably in to OAK, the aircraft could easily operate out from any of the Scandinavian or LGW bases to OAK back to BHX & back to the US.

Norwegian will be releasing new long haul routes tomorrow, delayed from last Thursday due to the Germanwing's crash.

splash&dash 29th Mar 2015 18:40

Air India.

It's on a v well known social media site beginning in 'F' on the airports own page. It's usually quite accurate. I'm unable to copy and paste the post or share the link but it features the Air India logo and says 'connecting' flights to YYZ and SFO. Says starts this summer dates TBC. I guess they will run DEL- SFO via BHX and YYZ on the 787? The BHX only flights already have great loads so maybe it'll be in addition to what already operates?
As mentioned before by another poster, I'm only saying what's been posted on a social media site so let's see what happens. YYZ has been done before from BHX by AI so hopefully it will happen.

LAX_LHR 29th Mar 2015 18:54

When was this post made? I went back to November 2014 on the official airport page and could not find this post whatsoever?

justplanecrazy84 29th Mar 2015 20:05

I've searched the page too both posts made by the page and posts to the page but can't find nothing.

BHX5DME 29th Mar 2015 22:04

The Facebook page where the Air India rumour is on is NOT an official BHX page, it is spotters / staff group.

crewmeal 30th Mar 2015 06:21

AI have tried YYZ before using a B777 and that didn't last long. What's so different now?

Air India resumes flights to Toronto

India's flag carrier Air-India launched three flights a week from Delhi to Birmingham and Toronto via Amritsar starting May 15,2005.

The latest service marks commencement of services to Toronto after eight years, the airline said in a statement.

The flights will be operated with state-of-the-art, fly-by-wire Boeing 777-222 ER aircraft on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The Delhi-Amritsar-Birmingham-Toronto route will provide the people of Punjab "direct and convenient services to Birmingham, the heartland of industrial and economic activity in the UK, and to Toronto, the financial capital of Canada", the airline said.

Between January 1982 and October 1984, Air-India had operated flights on the Mumbai-Delhi-Amritsar-Moscow-Birmingham route.

The introduction of the Delhi-Amritsar-Birmingham-Toronto service will take the number of flights operated by Air-India to Britain from 18 to 21 a week. The national carrier also plans to add three more flights -- on the Delhi-Dhaka-Kolkata-London sector from June 18 - to increase its flights to Britain to 24 a week.
Will they be saying the same again?

It lasted 3 years, that IS quite long in aviation terms! It was successful but the reasons it stopped was because of some ridiculous slot sitting exercise at Heathrow.

groundhogbhx 30th Mar 2015 14:02

And the vast majority of pax were DEL-YYZ, very few actually joined or left the flight at BHX.
