London Luton Airport named Best UK Business Airport
April 7, 2009
London Luton Airport has been named the Best UK Business Airport, as voted for by subscribers of Business Destinations magazine. The award recognises the convenience of travelling from London Luton as well as the many new services and improvements that have been introduced with the business traveller in mind. The airport was judged on criteria such as: quality of service, value for money, range of products and services, and environmental considerations. Glyn Jones, managing director at London Luton Airport, said: "Over the past year we have achieved growth in passenger numbers through the expansion of our route network and increases in the frequency of flights; passengers choose to fly from London Luton because of our excellent transport links and service levels. This award demonstrates just how attractive this airport is for airlines and travellers alike." In the last 12 months, the airport has made significant investment to improve access and is now more convenient and faster to get to with an upgraded public transport interchange, new and enlarged drop-off zone and improved short term car park. Road and rail access is now better than ever with the completion of the M1 motorway widening, dual carriageway link to the airport and excellent rail services to central London taking as little as 20 minutes. London Luton Airport is on of the UK's largest airports, carrying more than 10 million passengers annually. |
I see that £1 charge to drop off passengers has reached the national news this morning, as it was mentioned on the BBC Breakfast programme on BBC1.
|
'value for money, range of products and services' a pound for a flight and a pound to drop people off ,Luton is now truly the 'Pound shop' of the Uk's airports.

Two of Luton Airport’s major airlines have expressed concern over the introduction of a £1 passenger drop-off charge.
Mike Rutter, chief commercial officer of Flybe, said: ‘During these difficult economic times it is understandable that airports are looking to broaden revenue streams away from those that directly impact its airline customers and Flybe has no problem with Luton Airport looking at creative ways to boost their ancillary revenue. ‘However, we have yet to see any financial respite or benefits of any sort from these monopolistic profiteers to help the airline industry weather the challenges imposed by the current economic environment. ‘Airlines are the lifeblood of these businesses and there is little or no evidence as yet of airports taking any steps to reduce the charges they apply contrary to the reported opinions of the Air Transport Users Council.’ easyJet was more outspoken. Spokesman Andrew McConnell said: ‘Whatever next? We have seen charges for fast track security and plastic bags. Now they want £1 for dropping somebody off at the airport. ‘This new scheme is a recipe for traffic chaos, which will see people stopping on double yellow lines or parking in the bus lane. ‘Passengers already pay to use the airport facilities as part of their air fare. ‘The danger here is that people will choose other airports instead, rather than be forced to pay these charges.’ |
Buster - looks to me like airlines feeling that they have to say something so as to appear 'nice and cuddly' to passengers, but actually having no intention of doing anything more radical than just issuing an indignant press release !

2 of Lutons major airlines -
easyJet = yes, agreed. FlyBE = wouldn't class it as a major airline at LTN! |
New Service
Blue Airlines of Romania are to commence twice weekly flights between Luton and Bacau in Romania from 1 June on Mondays and Friday nights with Boeing 737s.
|
It now costs a £1 to travel on the shuttle bus. So how many passengers has the train company lost? My guess zero.
Ryanair are masters of added charges yet they grow from strength to strength. If a £1 charge stops people parking in the drop off area then it is a good move because after 10 minutes they will be reaching for their cheque books if they haven't moved on. Just hope the airport has more than the single entry and exit barrier they had last time. |
Blue Airlines of Romania are to commence twice weekly flights between Luton and Bacau |
According to the Blueair timetable, the flights are twice weekly and arrive late at night.
|
Given the timings (dep 2330 Mon, 0055 Fri) it may be a problem with night jet slots out of STN. Runway slots for LTN seem to have been approved already.
|
seems the arrival of El Al at luton could pave the way for other airlines to opt for luton
especially in the current climate, seems even more amazing. cant remember the last time luton attracted 2 new airlines in such a short space of time |
The negative press about all the £1 charges seems not to deter the airlines from wanting to use Luton.
|
A big difference to how airlines now see Luton must be the ease of access since the completion of the M1 and Airport Way.
|
What time are the EL-AL flights in/out of LTN ?
I know that when at STN the road outside the terminal had to be closed to all traffic but the long stay busses. This was not that big of a problem at STN as passengers could be dropped off and picked up at the short term parking/pick up point still a very short work from the terminal. Not knowing the layout of the roads/drop off point at LTN will this cause any problems to other Airlines/Passengers ? Also STN has its own POLICE FORCE, [ESSEX POLICE] based at the Airport they are armed and stand behind and above the check-in desks for every EL-AL flight, has LTN got its own POLICE FORCE/STATION ? |
daz211 I know you're a big Stansted fan boy but do you really think no one has thought about this? The Israelis are pretty thorough on these matters.
|
according to el-al security they assumed LTN was only a third rate airport, not third world!

Why has everyone got so defensive on this site ?
It was a simple question, I am just trying to see if LTN will have an easier time or a harder time than STN had with EL-AL, thats all:{. Why the LTN is better than STN and STN is better than LTN . Get over yourself and if you cant answer my Question without getting personal do us all a faver and keep your thoughts on me to yourself. I am not attaking LTN in any way at all, its a question, you do not have to answer every question on here feel free to just read from time to time. |
