Yes. BTS is twice daily & PRG daily, with an early morning arrival into LTN, which is much better than TOM. Other two destinations seem to be served 3/4 weekly each.

Didn't they operate a MAN-SZG at some point. That would be another good winter destination.

andyafc 18th Jul 2007 14:54

salzburg wuld be gd, maybe TOM could take that up if they drop the prague due to skyeurope, is this a gd bit of business then for luton dont know much bout skyeurope, havent even heard of kosice and poprad

tommyc2005 18th Jul 2007 15:12

This is great news for LTN in the short-term, but for how long can NE run from FR? In a way it makes sense - EZY pulled off BTS from LTN whereas there is competiton from STN, and to have opened another PRG route from STN when EZY/OK already fly it would have been ridiculous - but on the other hand they are leaving themselves vulnerable to Wizz.

Kosice is Slovakia's second largest city, and currently without a London link. Poprad is near the Tatra mountains, great for winter skiing and summer hiking.

SkyEurope did used to be bigger at STN, 2x daily at one time to BTS, BUD, KRK and WAW but with all the competition it all went wrong.

Powerjet1 18th Jul 2007 15:15

Don't think TOM will drop PRG because of Sky Europes' intervention. In fact, in someways, it actually enhances the destination by making a day trip possible, if you travel outbound on one airline, and return inbound by the other.

Heard that an additional TOM airframe will be based at LTN from May 08, a new 738. However, with no FCA based from Oct 07, overall much the same but more Ws, inbound, than this year.

SkyEurope Schedule

As far as I can see - schedule is as follows

BTS: Start Date 28.10, M-F Twice Daily, Sat-Sun Daily
PRG: Start Date 28.10, Daily
KSC: Start Date 29.10, M-W-F
TAT: Start Date 30.10, T-T-Sat

A total of 25 flights a week.

LTNman 18th Jul 2007 16:03

Airlines that move to Luton from other London airports don't seem to last too long. Hope this will change with Sky Europe.

Buster the Bear 18th Jul 2007 16:06

Transfered ops from Stansted, what is the catch?

Stunningly good news for Luton, let us hope they they don't do a Volare!

Having sat back and thought about this, I think that SkyEurope actually seriously considred Luton instead of Stansted back when they first launched operations from the UK? No doubt the lure of the BAA buck was too good to miss back then?

LGS6753 18th Jul 2007 20:49

Yes, they considered Luton before - when they first came in to the UK the flights appeared on the Luton Airport programme for a few weeks, so the decision must have been close.

And Buster's right to be cautious - not just Volare, remember Helvetica?

But there are some reasons behind this:

Stansted has increased its charges, and they will go higher.

Sky Europe, although a public company, is one of the weaker locos. Its fleet has stagnated at around 14 for some time whilst it achieved cost and operational efficiencies (see investor section of the website).

On Bratislava - the key route to its main base it competes head-to-head with Ryanair at STN, with similar flight timings. On Prague from STN it would compete with EZY and CSA daily, whereas from Luton it's just TOM three times a week.

Operationally, I'm sure Luton is more efficient to achieve rapid turn-rounds.

And maybe, just maybe someone has realised that Luton is far better located in the UK than Stansted!

It will be interesting to see how Poprad and Kosice perform - neither has any current direct link to Western Europe, and the former's website is mainly about private flying!

22/04 18th Jul 2007 22:28

This is what LTN needs - seems it has an unbalanced number of based aircraft for its current operations, while stands are unoccupied for long periods during the day.

Reminds me of long ago whern Sterling relocated form STN to LTN - anyone else remember the morning their SE210s were getting in from SRAs on 08 (no ILS then) when no one else was- don't know what their secret was!

As I have said before I have no doubt the airport will survive and be busy without geographical expansion in 30 years time -I just can't predict the mix of traffic

vintage ATCO 19th Jul 2007 07:15

With all these new routes feeding through BPK I do hope something is going to be done to deconflict our SIDs from others in the LTMA otherwise the queue will be back to the aprons. I know there are plans afoot to do this but it will be needed sooner rather than later.

Not that it will affect me . . . . . :) :) :) :) :)

SkyEurope have done STN-Poprad before as a winter ski route

pabely 19th Jul 2007 16:29

Formal annoucement on the airport web site now.
As 22/04 says, there is plenty more capacity as long as you don't want to overnight your aircraft.
As I have said before EZY/FR, be warned and with STN charges no longer being so attractive, who knows what the future might hold.........:oh:

Buster the Bear 19th Jul 2007 18:30

Norwegian, now that would be a coup!

pabely 19th Jul 2007 18:51

Yes just like Norwegian!!:D

ebenezer 19th Jul 2007 21:37

This is excellent news for LTN but I fear, as VA says, these additional flights operating from/to the east (all departing via Brookmans Park) are going to put a very severe strain on the ATC system and the London airspace in that area. LTN is already now generating 400+ flights a day and is now probably going to nudge towards 450 by the end of the year and there is a very real risk that system will just not cope :uhoh:

LTNman 20th Jul 2007 06:38

Runway 08 in use, 5 aircraft waiting at the holding point, 8 aircraft in the queue to start with 30 minutes delay in pushing back. Just another day I guess!

Powerjet1 20th Jul 2007 13:25

Understand the approach road and tunnel are flooded due to the torrential rain and access into the CTA is chaotic.

vintage ATCO 20th Jul 2007 13:42

. . . and we can't get out. Please send a boat :{

LTNman 20th Jul 2007 13:46

I did a live radio report for Three Counties Radio about the flooding at the airport so I have had my 30 seconds of fame:D:D

Nothing is getting through the tunnel in either direction with the police closing the road. The local road network is at a complete standstill with traffic on the A505 not moving as far as the eye can see due to the tunnel closure.

Sky Wave 20th Jul 2007 14:19

Glad I'm not working today. :} The thought of being stuck in LTN airport!!:oh:

Keep us advised, let us know when it opens, I might get tomorrow off work :)
