If I remember rightly Flybe came under much criticism at initially only operating the MAN route in the summer. Now maybe those critics will understand why as Blue Islands are obviously losing the route as its uneconomical.

Wonder which airline Blue Islands are rebooking passengers on to now.....

airhumberside 29th May 2013 20:09

I think you are thinking about MAN-Guernsey, were Aurigny were the competition, and who remain on the route year round ;)

I'm sure Flybe have always been year round on MAN-Jersey

J-Guy 21st Jul 2013 19:51

Interesting to read that a Danish tour operator will be operating up to 20 charter flights from Copenhagen next summer. It will support the growth of the Scandinavian market, which I understand Jersey Tourism are looking to expand. Wonder which airline will operate the flights?

bmaviscount 28th Jul 2013 06:40

I was in JER a couple of weekends ago during the nice weather and couldn't believe how quiet the airport was, even at Weekends. Do the figures show a continuing decline?

Well-timed visit, Sir :ok:

Apparently general tourism figures this year are up - and I suspect JER will be a bit busier once schools break up.

Edit: Year-old Stats here suggest JER is holding up quite well in comparison to some other airports. Busiest airports in the United Kingdom by total passenger traffic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Blowing away the cobwebs!

It's been a few months since this thread saw any life and it looks like 2014 is going to see quite a bit more orange!

We know about the LGW service by U2, which will be starting with 3 daily A319s, with the possibility of a fourth down the road. The three A319s (468 seats per day) will still be a considerable increase over this year's BE service - four E-175s (352); BE is moving to 195s for the Winter - its last hurrah on the route.

U2 is also launching a Belfast service from next Summer, no times stated as yet.

There was some talk of BA adding extra capacity on the overnight, since U2 will not be overnight; there was mention of a 321, but of course, BA has no 321s based in LGW at present.

It remains to be seen whether JER will see any services by GR's new Embraer 195.

cornishsimon 21st Sep 2013 17:11

BA is adding an extra LGW-JER frequency for 2014.

More airbus aircraft are due to move to LGW from what iv heard including at least one A321 and extra 320/319s.

Can the JER runway accommodate the A321?

cs

kcockayne 21st Sep 2013 23:18

Yes, it can. A few A321s have operated here in the past, but not a BAW one.

J-Guy 22nd Sep 2013 07:28

We shouldn't forget that Aurigny has restarted flights between Jersey and Alderney on a trial basis :ok:

Also Jet2 from East Midlands on a Saturday for the summer. Would hope the frequency could be increased at some stage as the loss of bmibaby has been felt this year.

I think we saw a Monarch A321 down here last year and there was definitely a Thomas Cook Scandinavia aircraft a couple of years ago, which I remember seeing.

EISNN 22nd Sep 2013 07:30

I'm being told that Aer Lingus Regional will operate ATR72 into JER from DUB everyday next summer. Anyone hear anything about this?

akerosid 1st Oct 2013 17:14

Haven't heard this rumour, but it wouldn't surprise me; the flight timings are not ideal now and the three weekly frequency with an acft that's too big for the route isn't the best way to operate. An earlier flight, with better frequency, which connects to/from EI's US network could be a very good move.

Also rumoured that U2 is looking at JER-BRS. Wouldn't surprise me if they did, but it will be interesting to see how the other two react ...

kcockayne 1st Oct 2013 17:55

If by "the other two" you mean Flybe & Blue Island, there will only be one reaction if Easy Jet operate to Bristol; they will relinquish the route !

Flitefone 1st Oct 2013 19:22

EZY & flyBe

With two of the top execs at FlyBe recently ex EZY, I'm surprised that no-one has yet posed the thought that EZY & FlyBe will collaborate. With FlyBe aircraft turning orange.

This could be a great method for EZY to move into the smaller airports like SOU, BHD, GCI, and to operate more biz routes from JER.

However you look at it FlyBe are fighting for survival, wrapping under the EZY brand could be a slick move, much lower marketing costs, more reach, and would sink Aurigny overnight.

Flybe have a tough winter ahead, will be interesting to see what they look like next summer.

Meanwhile I predict that the Aurigny Embraer will last about as long as their Twin Otter..

Then there's Loganair, although orange is not really Scotland's colour!

Good idea !
I definitely think that there is more than meets the eye about EZY's, GCI application.

macuser 2nd Oct 2013 23:18

Dream on! EZY success has been built upon simple fleet operation. They really do not want to be in Dash8/Embraer land etc. Flybe sub- operation would be a burden they would not wish to carry. Unfortunately for us travelling public the frequencies on routes out of the CI may well decrease through EZY presence but the seat capacity will be there and prices will fall - a long way.

toledoashley 3rd Oct 2013 06:16

Could LGW-GCI have been a good case for the C-Series?

I have no idea about what ezy are up to, or, even if they are up to something. Nor do I have any argument about what you say. But, it was an interesting idea about flybe/easyjet.
I simply have my doubts that ezy are seriously interested in Guernsey.
Time will tell.

beauport potato man 3rd Oct 2013 12:25

We've applied for the route to give us the option of doing it in the future. Doesn't mean we'll do it.
We did the same with Cairo ages ago. Got the route but still don't fly it.

Same as the AOC, that expanded recently to incorporate the Middle East, doesn't mean we'll fly there but it gives options.

It's been a busy week, this week I visited the Department for Transport in the UK........ (Cont'd) They helped us a lot on launching Moscow and we talked a bit about Cairo, because we have got the permission from the UK Government to fly on the bilateral which of course we're not doing at the moment.

From an EZY comm on 20th Sept so much more recent than that May dated news article.
I don't get involved with the nitty gritty detail but it seems something which we are able to do now/soon but aren't planning to.

Many thanks for the gracious reply.

What I read into the EZY Guernsey application - is the Government there a closed shop reference competition on their key (Aurigny) routes?. If so, EZY won't waste their time. If, however, there is an avenue to start up operations there, perhaps a LGW route would be a good place for them to start.

Was it six years ago in Jersey EZY launched LPL and LTN, the latter dropped after one season, I think. GLA was started up then SEN followed with NCL introduced this year. LGW now confirmed from next Spring. Slowly but surely and with little fuss they are becoming a major seat provider out of Jersey. Also there is little if any adverse comment in the media about EZY ops from their passengers or any other party. Seems to me EZY have got their brand more or less right.

J-Guy 7th Oct 2013 18:55

More good news - Jet2 has announced 3 weekly flights (Tu.Th.Sa.) to Manchester for summer 2014. I've been hoping to see Jet2 on this route for a while so good to see it delivered at last. :ok:

From us spotters, it means there will be 3 Jet2 aircraft on the ground at the same time on Saturday afternoons.

Manchester arrives 13:45 departs14:30
Leeds Bradford arrives 14:05 departs 14:45
East Midlands arrives 14:05 departs 14:50

kcockayne 8th Oct 2013 11:00

May not be quite as good news as you thought, as I have been told that Jet 2 will be dropping the Belfast route (now that EZY hve got it).

GAZMO 8th Oct 2013 11:38

Jet2 have already announced no flights to JER or BKL for summer 14

EZY fares

Just out of interest had a look at LGW - JER fares with EZY starting next Spring.

Seems like you can get a deal around £54 return without hold bags, with BA coming in around £68 for a similar deal. EZY Could be good for short trips/family visits/just sheer short get-aways. Any comments?

J-Guy 6th Nov 2013 09:02

As suggested earlier by EISNN, Dublin - Jersey is transferred to Aer Lingus Regional from April. Flights operate daily except Wednesday. Flight arrives Jersey at 13:30, departs to Dublin at 14:00.

akerosid 4th Dec 2013 20:50

More cuts from the airline that still uses "Jersey" as its callsign!

JER-BRS to go from 7/1/14, but of course, U2 expected to start this coming Summer.

Seasonal services to NCL and LTN also to go.

Wonder if U2 or SI would have another go at JER-LTN?

Cloud1 4th Dec 2013 21:03

Yes, you are right - the cheek of them retaining a bit of their heritage and history. Its not like they will offer many flights in to Jersey after March and during the summer months is it....

Southampton
Exeter
Birmingham
Manchester
Edinburgh
Cardiff
Humberside
Inverness
Aberdeen
Durham
Doncaster
East Midlands
Glasgow
Norwich

Now these may well be subject to further change, but dear me what a silly comment to make.

:ugh:

With Flybe not operating the Jet into Jersey this summer and then continuing onto Palma , Malaga and Mahon on a Saturday as a charter has left Fly Direct which chartered the plane a gap to find a new suitable aircraft

They will now operate 21 flights throughout the summer from Jersey only to Palma on a Wednesday using Volotea B 717 aircraft ( i think a first for Jersey )

MerchantVenturer 3rd Jan 2014 11:08

If easyJet does start JER-BRS what would that do to the 2 x daily Blue Islands service that runs year round?

I can't see easyJet providing a daily service throughout the year which means that there would be no route at all in winter if easyJet led to Blue Islands pulling out.

Much as I like easyJet, and they've done wonders for BRS, I hope they stay off the JER route which I think is better suited to the smaller aircraft currently operating it.

J-Guy 3rd Jan 2014 12:23

Yes, it will be the first time we’ve seen the 717 in Jersey. I’m looking forward to seeing it down here.

The summer schedules are more or less finalised now. The main changes with Flybe, easyjet, Jet2 and Aer Lingus have been noted already, but one or two small things might be of interest:

- Cityjet to Cardiff 5x weekly (goes on sale Monday I think?)
- Easyjet 2 flights to Liverpool on Sat/Sun during the high-season.
- Lufthansa appear to be operating the A319 from Dusseldorf (it’s been the 735 previously).
- FlyNiki is operating the Vienna charter between May and July (passengers fly via Munich with LH for the rest of the season).
- Only the Air Berlin DH4 flight from Frankfurt will route via Guernsey - Hannover and Stuttgart operate direct to Jersey this year.
- There are a quite impressive number of charter flights from Denmark between 18 May and 28 September – majority are from Copenhagen but also Aalborg and Billund. Not sure which airline is operating them – Jettime?

Sorry, can someone explain what the safety issue is? Is it the case there will be more diversions in future as rules have been tightened?
That building is a proper landmark, it would be a shame to lose it.

OA32 24th Feb 2014 20:39

Sorry, can someone explain what the safety issue is? Is it the case there will be more diversions in future as rules have been tightened?
That building is a proper landmark, it would be a shame to lose it.
The building itself isn't a problem at all now the top floors have been taken off it, the issue is the taxiway is too close to the runway for use during periods of low visibility. To be able to re-align the taxiway as required to meet the regs they have to demolish (at the very least) the northern part of the arrivals building, the hangar that is all but completely condemned and the fire station. Of course to do that they first need to build a new fire station and also the new freight sheds which will house the people from the hangar.

As for the building being a landmark, it's been altered so significantly that apart from the facade it's not really the same building anymore. The planning ministers idea of moving the runway further north to negate the issue would require 1 road to be moved (top of Jubilee Hill), 1 to be deleted from existence (by St. Peter's school), probably 3-4 houses to be bought and demolished, have St. Peter's Church moved or demolished, have all the navigational aids and lights moved and the fire training ground moved, all of which would require further land purchase.

This would all come at a great expense to the taxpayer probably to the tune of £100million or so. Is that really worth a very poor example of 30's architecture? Instead they could have the same design incorporated into a new arrivals building that doesn't leak every time it rains.

kcockayne 24th Feb 2014 22:17

As an ex Jersey ATCO & Watch Manager who took part in many project meetings , planning discussions & technical briefings on this subject, let me explain what I know.
First, OA32 is correct with nearly all of his explanation.
However, The upper part of the 1937 building still lies within the 1:7 slope from the side of the runway. As does the steeple of St.Peter's church.
In the case of the Terminal, it intersects the northern end of the building between the 2 sets of windows above the "viewing balcony" & rises 1:7 in a southerly diagonal direction until it reaches the southern end of the building at the top corner.
This was never a problem until the CAA increased the safety standards (might have been in the '80s), & Jersey Airport was exempted from complying with these "new" standards because the infringement was from an existing building & plans existed for it to be demolished.
When the new A taxiway was constructed it was deliberately decided to construct it with the bend in it (to avoid the '37 building). This was done despite myself & others suggesting that it should not be, because the Airport management should have taken the opportunity to comply with the CAA new standards (which they would eventually have to do, in any case).
The reason that this bend in the taxiway was constructed (despite it infringing the safety area alongside the runway) was the need to accommodate a straightened taxiway by demolishing a substantial part of the new arrivals hall (which had only been built a couple of years earlier !) to allow the re-positioning of the taxiway through the apron.
However, it was always the Harbour & Airport Authority & the Airport Managements' intention to straighten this taxiway & build another "new" arrivals hall in due course; & thereby comply fully with the CAA standards, eventually.
This looks like what is now beginning to take place. At last !
As regards moving the runway to the North. Don't even think about it (as OA32 states)t. This is just another example of a politician talking about matters of which he has absolutely NO understanding.
I worked in this asbestos ridden building for 30 years & , in that time it was never once hit by an aircraft going around in bad weather !
Nevertheless, it is now time to pull it down.

Sounds to me this Deputy Duhamel can't take a decision and doesn't travel out of Jersey very often. Nostalgia yes, but not to the extent of halting progress. The Airport management must have their heads in their hands over this crass procrastination!

Wife of Bath 25th Feb 2014 08:09

Thanks folks for fleshing out the details on this. Seems an even more ridiculous decision, or lack thereof. It's Jersey politics all over from what one hears :ugh:

Aero Mad 27th Mar 2014 20:27

As noted elsewhere, Flybe has acquired slots at LCY for what looks to be a 2x daily service to Jersey alongside Inverness, Belfast City, Newquay and Isle of Man. 284 movements in the season providing 22,152 seats will make it BE's second busiest service out of LCY after the BHD, and (alongside Blue Islands' service) JER the 16th most served destination out of LCY in terms of ATMs.

Also reputedly an announcement regarding a possible rebrand due next week. Interesting times ahead, it seems - but if nothing else the new regime must indeed be confident of the results of their cost-cutting. Yogi Berra once said 'The future ain't what it used to be'.

Flybe back at City? I beg to differ.

Airport Coordination Limited - Reports/Statistics - London City Airport (requires download, for which a false email address works)

macuser 28th Mar 2014 23:05

I know that in the previous decade the Dash 8 - 200s of British European cum Flybe went steep approach equipped into LCY and I think their - 300s at the time may have been equipped also.

However, i always understood that the Flybe Q400s were never set up with the necessary equipment for the the steep approach into LCY.

Will there be a fleet upgrade?
