Best wishes to all the XL staff, I have only flown XL once, that was last year when I flew from Bangkok to Chiang Mai when the aircraft was on charter to Nok Air, the staff were excellent.:ok:

On another note, football sponsors, West ham have XL and Newcastle Northern Rock, both these clubs were managerless at the beginning of the week:8

Sad sad news

I know how you guys feel having gone through this with my previous employer (Zoom) a couple of weeks ago.
After getting over the initial shock, the first thing we did was have a HUGE booze up to let off a bit of steam.
For the pilots, there are jobs out there, plenty in fact....the trouble is there aren't that many in the UK.
Good luck to one and all.

Same story as always, management have a safety parachute, staff do not.
That is total crap. My son-in-law is with XL management. I have just finished speaking with my daughter - they are facing some very hard times indeed with the probable loss of their house.

I feel totally frustrated being 12,000 miles away. I sincerely hope that somebody, somewhere can pull the proverbial rabbit out of the hat - for everyone's sake.

Thanks Ivan, I had thoughts along the same lines.

The last lot that phoned me at 0700 to say its all over went bump at 2359/0001. The Court appointed company staff looked an awful lot like folks who had been in the building for a good few weeks 'working on additional finance for the company'.

Sorry to be very nieve here, but just how long does it take to file (and how many) forms outside 9-5 in the UK to wind up a company of this size?

Good luck to you from XL, like too many, been there and it ain't good but as one door slams in your face, another will open, hopefully very soon for you all.

Chins up.

fms_fail,

There is never any easy way when this happens. When I worked for an airline that folded, I was in the car park of my soon to be new employer, I was just going in for my interview, when I got the phone call..Fired. When I got into the interview, the two managers interviewing me said that I had just lost my job, and they felt it descent that someone should tell me to my face. I was offered a cup of coffee, and we got on with the interview. I got the job.

The company? SABRE

Sure I heard of an F/O who was with Silverjet, went to Zoom, went to XL.
If so kiss of death might apply

My god, how must that person be feeling now?

Good luck to all at XL

I thought I'd made the last XL landing but it looks like I've been beaten!

RHINO 12th Sep 2008 08:29

I expect the CAA to be overwelmed in trying to deal with this. They do not have the infrastructure let alone the expertise.

have a look at what JET 2 (Dart Group) , Monarch , Easy are charging for one way fares back from TFS, PMI, AGP etc.

Winners and losers.......... makes you :yuk:

Ivan Taclue 12th Sep 2008 08:31

One more thing....

Assuming most of the staff (apart from Post Holders) have been terminated, may I suggest you all visit the local Job Centre a.s.a.p and file for the Job Seeker's Allowance, previously UB40, as the first week or so is not taken into consideration. For some of you it looks like a humbling experience, but hey, better in your pocket than HMG's.

It also provides a framework for retrieving outstanding pay / flightpay / holiday pay etc as you now become first-line creditors. Mind you, this will take time.

And b.t.w. see the sums of money paid to those Administrators........ Effing amazing!!!!

Very sorry to hear this.

My thoughts are with the staff and their families at this very difficult time.

RHINO, just checked the EZY website and it's standard pricing for this time of year / short notice. To clarify, I have no interest in EZY, nor am I affected by the XL disaster, I'm just curious and saddened by another airline going down.....

dontdoit 12th Sep 2008 08:40

Someone asked where it leaves Travelcity - here is the full list of affected companies (in admininstration):

XL Leisure Group Plc, XL Airways UK Limited, Excel Aviation Limited, Explorer House Limited, Aspire Holidays Limited, Freedom Flights Limited, Freedom Flights (Aviation) Limited, The Really Great Holiday Company plc, Medlife Hotels Limited, Travel City Flights Limited, Kosmar Villa Holidays plc

Shocking news today and l sadly think we are not yet finished the cull of 2008 as the country descends into financial ruin. It is a real shame for XL as l believe the product to be very good but investors are all twitchy at the moment.
Good luck to all the staff. There may not be many jobs in this country but there are loads of opportunities overseas (Vietnam,India etc) which may not sound ideal but it will only be for a couple of years (hopefully) then it should start to get slowly better. Who knows, you might actually like it.

australiancalou 12th Sep 2008 08:44

Seems that XL France and Germany have been "bought" by Straumur

Qatar are looking for NG rated guys for 777 fleet, give them a try. Think they have interviews booked at LHR on 19 Sep. Keep your chins up and best wishes to all.

FOUR REDS 12th Sep 2008 08:58

Ivan, how right you are!

It took over 18 months to get all my monies out, but well worth waiting for.

As an aside, don't believe the Administrators 'commitment to keep the viable parts as a going concern and to look for inward financial investments etc' It did not work for Ambassador, Debonair and countless others. Even the ATR42 outfit that folded at NCL some years back and got resurrected, but did collapse after all.
