There is an article about Bristol v Cardiff airports in the Welsh on-line newspaper IC Wales - see link above.

The conclusion of a quoted 'expert' (how does one become an expert in this sort of thing?) in the article is that this may actually be a good thing for Cardiff and Wales (and presumably by inference not so good for Bristol) because Aer Arann's schedules are better than Ryanair's and the low cost fares that Ryanair charge will be unsustainable in the long run.

My experience is that FR's fares are not always low.

The article then goes on to compare Bristol and Cardiff airports and declares Cardiff the winner.
It scores out of ten for each of a number of airport facets, giving reasons for its scores.

The summary is as follows.

Road access CWL 6 BRS 5

Bus access CWL 6 BRS 7

Can somebody enlighten me regarding the new structure on the apron, when I arrived back into Bristol yesterday we were bussed pass the new structure (looks a bit like a terrapin classroom) and I noticed that it has Gate 8B on a sign inside. It is also linked to the main terminal by a covered walkway.
Is it intended as a holding area before borading especially now that they have removed half the seats in the terminal and it becomes very crowded?

"Terrapin Classroom!?" Never heard it called that before! It's the "forward coaching lounge." Pax through gate 8 and then boarded onto the a/c by coaches from the gates around the "classroom." It's being trialled on May 1st.

For Runway length perhaps a 3 for BRS might be more appropriate, for weather record a 2 and for number of weather diversions from BRS, probably to CWL, a 9 :)

ah ha the runway length ploy !!!, what,s that old addage ITS NOT THE SIZE THAT COUNTS, ITS WHAT YOU DO WITH IT THAT MATTERS !!!! so going by that, perhaps the scores should reflect runway usage, brs-9, cwl-2 (i think i have seen an a/c at cwl once in a while) i have been working at cwl this evening, when i left there were 4 night stoppers,when i got back to brs-21 night stoppers. PROOF AND PUDDING COMES TO MIND !! :ok:

Apparently Onur Air are sending in an A300-600 on their Monday morning Dalaman flights.

Christ that should be interesting, there was an onur airbus 320 in the other day, MV - intresting report but think it may be a bit biased toward CWL as its a welsh newspaper, pretty sure if the evening post did the same then it would come up with reasons BRS is better, but guess at end of day its down to personal prefrence

Look on the bright side, they might bring back the MD83!!!

Can anyone tell me what airlines/aircraft I should expect to see at BRS? Got about 5 hours down there on the 1st of June (Thursday) from about 10:00 until about 15:00.

If you click on this link youwill arrive on the BRS apron page.

Top left you will see a heading 'Mayflys'. This is a list of all arrivals/departures for various periods which are self-evident.

If you click on 'Next Week' you will see a list of all anticipated flights for that week and a glance
at the Thursday will give you an idea of what to expect on 'your' Thursday.

Nearer the time you could access the page again and bring up the list for the Thursday that you are visiting.

Incidentally, there are other sections of the apron page that give live apron status reports. However, only the eastern apron is covered. The western apron, increasingly used by charter flights and some scheds, is not.

However, the Mayfly covers all commercial arrivals/departures on both aprons. It does not normally show biz jets, flying schools, air taxis and flying club, nor helicopters.

Well the first charters went off this morning with no issues KM-CFU, FCA-MAH,TOM-IBZ, XLA-DLM all went off on time as far as i know, as wel as all other traffic by the looks of things, only thing i heard of was the KM crew thinking they were going 0400z not 0500z - DOH!, however i left at 0730 so dont know how rest of day went, any reports on how the portable classroom has been going?:eek:

Heard rumours that Gate Gourmet have had to apparently do quotes for a BRS-IAD with DL and a route to DXB with someone, also I thought XLA were bringing in 2x800s for the summer? are they coming a bit later in season, or are they sticking with the 400 and the KM?

DL have no transatlantic service to IAD are are unlikely to launch any

Saw a low loader drive in to the airport tonight with what appeared to be a motorised hydraulic lift , the type used to load containers into the holds of wide body aircraft . Can any one on the ground at the airport enlighten me. Doe's this mean I can look forward to seeing 747 400s on the apron,or am I just fantasising?

Just one XLA 738 is being based this summer, it arrives around the 15th of May to replace the 734.

The loader you saw would be used on 767 or any airbus with container holds. 747 at BRS would probably shut the whole place down as they dismantled it to get it out by road!

Thought DL to IAD was a strange one, may be AA or CO, but even then i cant imagine where they'd get pax to fill an IAD from BRS.

The only 'legacy' airline with an IAD hub is UA and I think they have more important priorities than BRS
