Routes

Any one know if there are going to be any new routes from LDY shortly.

Stewart28 27th Apr 2008 10:24

Found this when search the net about the airport manager
http://www.derryjournal.com/journal/...ort.4022521.jp

Nineiron 27th Apr 2008 16:17

Interestingly, the City Council chief engineer 'retired' about the same time. Surprised they are looking for an operations manager as well.

Ranger 1 27th Apr 2008 23:35

Just as a matter of interest who carries out the Bird Control, in Derry now?

Stewart28 28th Apr 2008 09:59

There is a bird unit at the airport, always see a yellow jeep with bird unit writing on it

Looks like LDY is to lose link to GLA, BA website not accepting bookings after july 23rd to GLA unless it will be switched to the flybe website then. If not then it will be PIK left with FR.

MarkD 18th May 2008 21:40

that's due Logiebear losing the Irish government subsidy route to DUB (to Aer Arann) - the same aircraft was doing LDY-GLA.

Nineiron 18th May 2008 21:46

Ldy-gla

There do not seem to be any flights after 21 July on the BA timetable. Are BA confirming the withdrawal of this route?

4567 18th May 2008 23:52

Doubt it BA have never been interested in the happenings of Loganair. Especially now that there leaving for Flybe in OCT 08.

Local Residents

I read that today 31st of May was the last day for residents beside the airport at the end of the runway to move out...

Does anyone know when the work will be finished??

With the arrival of Aer Arann in July does anyone think that they will look to other new routes from the airport? I think that the ATR 42/72 would be well suited to many markets, Edinburgh for a start would be a good one, what about Manchester?

Would be great to see some new developments for new routes at Eglinton.

Ryanair announced on Thursday that they will be starting and new route to London-Luton in October

mysecretsmile 10th Jun 2008 09:24

When is the Derry runway finished

Good news that London Luton is being started by Ryanair, shoudl add
more valuable passenger numbers to the airport.

Does anyone know when the new runway extension at the airport
is due to be complete ? I had heard that Spring 09 had been talked about ?

Will this open up the airport to providing a lot more new routes (maybe a
couple of European direct routes by RYR ?)

EI-BUD 10th Jun 2008 20:31

Ryanair routes

I would imagine if Ryanair do flights to Continental Europe they will be from bases abroad, ie Alicante, however, I think the likely destinations would be Malaga, Faro and Paris Beauvais however as none of these are bases they would need to be W pattern flights. We will have to wait and see!!

Any thought's?

Is the Airport up for sale? What a relief that will be to the North Wests tax payers who have had to subsidise this loss maker from the start.

ALPHA ECHO 14th Jun 2008 11:02

1) I think you mean the Rate payers and yes I suppose speaking as a north west rate payer I will be happy to see my rates lower significantly.
The reality is though that I probably wont because bills only ever seem to increase these days.
2) one thing the "Derry Liar" opps, sorry Journal and it's readers never do is to attempt to balance the high cost to rate payers with the benifit to the region i.e employment (both direct and indirect), tourism, transport infrastructure, convenience, etc
3) luton starts 28th oct

rubik101 15th Jun 2008 23:39

I think it is quite likely that RYR will cease operations from LDY just as soon as the new apron/taxiway is finished.

cuthere 16th Jun 2008 08:31

Why do you think that?!

Stewart28 17th Jun 2008 10:08

I don't think Ryanair will cease operation from LDY, as today they just announced another route to BHX just check there website

Uncle Monty 17th Jun 2008 12:09

BHX could be instead of EMA as it has yet to make an appearance on the winter schedule.

ALPHA ECHO 19th Jun 2008 06:19

Fine, plenty of room to offer the next operator.....:)

seriously though

Donnybrewer road - visited it yesterday and it's like a war zone - I should think it will be at least a few months before the new RESA is in operation.

mysecretsmile 23rd Jun 2008 17:40

Was through Derry Airport last week and leaving aside the apron/runway works, the terminal building seems to be getting a right good tidy up.

Seems to be a lot of internal terminal work going on, new security office, new vid screens, advertising sites going up. Looks good so far.

What are the long term prospects for LDY really like ? Can it complete with the
2 Belfast airports. Maybe while the road links to Belfast are so poor and tale so long for those travellign from the North West region ?

Check Out Flybe...

Now showing Flights from Derry airport to Glasgow and Belfast City is on the drop down list but no flights are available on that route yet?

Glasgow is a direct nonstop flight
Southampton is a connection through that Glasgow flight as is
Birmingham and Sumburgh..

A good vote of confidence for the airport and the Glasgow route. Wonder what will happen re Belfast City - Derry ? This was operated in the early 90s by Flybe (JEA). They operated a triangle on routes between Belfast City , Derry, and Dublin.

Anyone have any info...?

escapedATCO 1st Jul 2008 21:54

Flybe is now doing connections throught out the network online this might explain the above.

johnref 1st Jul 2008 22:21

Cant see 6 hour layovers in Glasgow working. You could drive to Belfast, Dublin or even Knock and get to Birmingham quicker.

However the GLA plane leaves Derry at 10 and comes back in at 4pm. No way is it going to overnight so I would suggest a schedule adjustment is due. These are the times of the Loganair flight when they had a Dublin return either end of day - so unless it is going to do a Belfast return for connections either end something must be for changing.

cuthere 1st Jul 2008 23:20

Or you could fly LDY to BHX using the direct Ryanair flight from the end of October.

LDY to BHD sounds stupid, until you consider the 150 minute train journey, and the pot-luck drive. Having recently had the misfortune of driving from Belfast city centre to Derry on a Thursday evening, the bottle-neck at the end of the M2 and at the end of the Tomb bypass made a 75 mile journey take nearly three hours, so I'm sure there'd be some takers for a LDY to BHD.

cuthere 11th Jul 2008 17:52

Just heard on BBC N Ireland, that the airport will be closed next Wednesday and Thursday due to council staff being involved in a UNITE strike. Bad enough, but the the best bit of the piece was the Airport Users' Group Chairman (didn't catch his name) telling Mark Carruthers that about 9 flights will be affected!! Hahahaha!! Good to see he knows ANYTHING about the airport he involves himself with. Off the top of my head I can think of 8xSTN and 8xDUB (4 in/4 out) alone. Then there's PIK, GLA, BRS, LPL and EMA.

:ugh: Priceless!!!

Skyhigh-Ulster 11th Jul 2008 21:36

Derry airport strike goes ahead - closed for 2 days

Derry Airport will be closed on Wednesday 16 July and Thursday 17 July after talks over a pay dispute collapse.

The strike is part of Unite union's UK-wide industrial action, and they are insisting on an all member strike. Derry City Council had called on the union Unite to change its decision to strike at the City of Derry Airport.
The council had hoped to secure an exemption for airport staff from the strike.
A spokesperson for Derry City Council said they were "disappointed that an agreement could not be reached".

tallseabird 11th Jul 2008 21:50

Shouldn't mention BBC and aviation in the same sentence - they are worlds apart, like all news organisations (post troubles)

boredcounter 11th Jul 2008 23:52

And if the serving Airlines

pull out? How many out of work? just a question

J.O. 12th Jul 2008 00:26

Maybe they can use that time to do some long overdue upgrades. I know it's important to the locals to have an airport, but it is time it was brought up to a better standard, IMHO.

banana head 12th Jul 2008 02:46

Probably better off being on strike this weekend..... better than trying to prevent some ejeet from planing a tricolour on top of a pile of bags and setting light to 'em.......

Solar 12th Jul 2008 03:27

Thought the strike was nicely timed to coincide with the holiday weekend, gives a bit of time to recover.
Apart from the passenger disruption there will be a few private flyers who will be a bit annoyed but then they should be used to the irregular closures there.

cuthere 12th Jul 2008 07:39

J.O. if you read the exisiting thread on DERRY/LONDONDERRY you could keep up to speed with the substantial improvement works going on at LDY.

J.O. 12th Jul 2008 22:56

cutthere:

Point taken, but my posting and another one announcing that LDY will be closed for two days due to a strike, originated in another thread that just started yesterday on the Rumours and News forum. The mods obviously decided to merge our postings into this thread. As I don't frequent this particular forum, I hadn't seen the previous discussions about the improvements. Now I have.

Has the new Airport Manager taken up post yet?

GH

Suzeman 26th Aug 2008 15:24

And which new Airport Manager would that be then?

Suzeman

groundhand 27th Aug 2008 08:47

That would b e the one that Derry County Council were advertising for in late May/early June. I may be corrected in that it might have been a Airport General Manager rather than my initial mail of Airport Manager.

Advertising May time; interviews possibly June time; new post holder current job termination anything from 4 - 26 weeks; hence the question.

Just got an e-mail from Ryanair telling me they've cancelled the Bristol to Derry route (which I was booked on) from October 1st. Not really a surprise, though the last few times I've flown on it it's been nearly full (though perhaps most people had, like me paid less than £30 return).

If only Aer Arann would take over the route. Surely, with their smaller aircraft, they could make a go of it?

CCR 4th Sep 2008 23:16

Maybe Aer Arann will..they just picked up the Cork-Glasgow Prestwick route that Ryanair is canceling.
