LAPA on its last legs

It looks like LAPA, which has about half of the internal Argntine market, is on the way out. Tickets are being honoured by other carriers with the government picking up the tab. What odds on an employee takeover ?

Shame, have flown with them before from B.A. to Iguazu, nice airline with a modern fleet but they flew a lot of charters as well and with the economy as it is in Argentina nobody is going on holiday so I guess it was inevitable.

For those who don't speak Spanish, the BsAs Herald had this:

The workers of endangered private airline LAPA yesterday held a series of protests around the city to demand the government’s and the current presidential candidates’ intervention in the financial crisis which has put the company on the brink of collapse. Early yesterday, the workers occupied the Jorge Newbery city airport’s runway (photo), interrupting operations for 20 minutes. Afterwards, they blocked the Costanera Avenue opposite the airport and then staged a protest outside América television channel where government-backed presidential candidate Néstor Kirchner was participating in a programme. They later staged a demonstration outside the Labour Ministry where a meeting between the company’s owners and union members was being held. The meeting produced no results and will continue today, sources said. Kirchner meanwhile said that the workers of LAPA “cannot be victims of business oblivion.”

BTW, if you want to see a real classy airline, try flying LADE!

This is the latest in Spanish.

The gist of it is that the government wants to drag matters out until after the elections, that April salaries have been paid, that administrators have been appointed, that there is talk of the eternal Eurnakian getting involved again and that there appears to be some possibility of Aerolineas hiring someof those who are soon to lose their jobs.
