LOW COST AIRLINE TAKES OFF FOR EUROPE
By Gordon Darroch, PA News
Scotland’s first “no-frills” airline was launched today offering cheap flights to five Mediterranean destinations.
Flyglobespan.com will launch its first scheduled flights from Glasgow Prestwick and Edinburgh in April next year, with fares starting at £49.
The airline’s summer timetable, which runs until November, was launched at Prestwick airport today.
Its parent company, the Globespan Group, is based in Edinburgh and is best known as Britain’s biggest Canadian tour operator.
Tom Dalrymple, managing director of Globespan Group, said: “This new service represents a first for Scotland.
“Passengers will benefit from Globespan’s 30-year reputation for delivering maximum choice and value.
“Flyglobespan.com will offer direct, scheduled affordable air connections to popular sunspots not previously available from any Scottish airport.”
The company trialled a scheduled service from Edinburgh to Nice this summer and said it managed to fill more than 80% of its seats.
From April passengers will be able to fly from both Edinburgh and Prestwick to Palma, Nice and Malaga, as well as Edinburgh to Barcelona and Prestwick to Rome.
Tom Wilson, managing director of Glasgow Prestwick Airport, said: “We have worked long and hard to win low-cost services to these destinations and I’m particularly pleased that it is a Scottish company that has taken the initiative to operate the routes.”

Scottish Secretary Helen Liddell said the new services were a boost for Scotland’s economy.
She said: “Flyglobespan.com’s decision to develop new services from Prestwick and Edinburgh will provide business and leisure travellers with an even greater range of direct services to continental Europe.
“It is also great news for business and tourism with these new direct flights bringing significant benefits back into Scotland.
“I urge other airlines to follow this lead and develop the potential that exists here in Scotland.”

As far as I remember Globespan was the main business that ran north American charters from Prestwick in the 1970s and 80s. They used a lot of Laker aircraft and eventually did a huge amount of business on Laker's scheduled services to New York, Miami and LA from Prestwick.

Aircraft understood to be 142 seat Boeing 737-300s operated by Channel Express.

Certainly not a fly by night operation .... unless Chanex forget to unload the freight !!

You may know already there seems to be some rumour about another low-cost setting up here, apparently called Air Scotland (original!).

There's a sort of template website at:

www.air-scotland.com

Pretty naff website design for my taste, but does anyone know about this? - is it a load of rubbish, where will it operate to/from, etc?

Interestingly in the press release the says services will run from April to November 2003.

Maybe the routes aren't viable in the Winter season?

Anyway how long before we hear from the other low cost airlines?

A most interesting comment, about trans Atlantic plans, by Mr Dalrymple of Globespan

He said longer term plans could include an alliance of no-frills airlines
From most other people this would appear nonsense but Globespan have operted trans Atlantic for decades so who knows what their plans might be ......
