Question Virgin Atlantic and United Airlines to operate out of BHX??

Just wondered if anyone could shed any light on the latest rumour at BHX. If it is true do we know what a/c types will be operating and where they will be going?

You're going to have to expand on that one, where did you hear it?

I seem to recall a brief report in the 'Birmingham Post' a few months back, in which which RB was said to have confirmed that VS would like and had considered some BHX departures.

I got the impression, though, it was very much past tense and the time was not right.

Talking

Is this from the same source at BHX that was certain that Delta, Singapore and SAS were transferring ops from MAN to BHX in 2000?

You shouldn't believe everything you hear!!

From what I've seen lately at United, it will probably be an RJ flown by an United Express crew.......

Nobody's trying to turn this into a MAN thread, calm down lambchopboy. (So much for freedom of speech!)

It was just an illustration of the folly paying too much heed to rumours, especially those founded on nothing more than wishful thinking.

Never worked out of BHX but I've worked out of MAN. Isn't it better now they've got a 2nd runway. Shame the ground handling leaves a lot to be desired. And the punters love it for it's road/rail connections. Anyone else got any comments about MAN?

(Sorry chopsueyboy - couldn't resist it)

So so many rumours have been banded about since AA announced that they are leaving BHX for good on OCT 16.

Rumours include VS BHX-ORD, BMI BHX-ORD A330 and even Maersk leasing a B767-300 to operate as a franchise for BA. This is as well as BA mainline, Delta and every other airline that can get rights to fly it. AA could not fil lthe "C" class which made it very unprofitable for them. CO only just make money on BHX-EWR hence they ops B757-200, which i understand is the only route over the pond they operate a B757 on.

It is very difficult to make money on the atlantic ex BHX unless you get he marketing right ! You need the "C" class catchment that still goes via LHR.... difficult but possible someone will take route but I think the climate is still not right.

CO operate EWR-LIS year round with 757. Also seasonal DUB/SNN/GLA. Pax not too impressed with single aisle and lack of IFE. Mainly down to reason didnt buy enough 767-200 and 767-400 too big.

Its not that hard to make money on transatlantics from BHX. BA did it succesfully for many years by sticking a 767 on the route and stuffing it chock full of cargo from the big local manufacturers. Soon as they swapped a 757 on the route the cargo capacity dwindled as did the revenue. Incidentally somebody once told me that BA makes more money per kg from cargo than pax!

CO to BHX

Remembering that BHX-EWR has [apparently] relatively more economy pax and less BusinessFirst pax than other routes, look at the seating config foir the 757 and 767-200 and you'll see why 767's don't do BHX. Yep - its because there are actually more Y class seats in the 757 then in the 6-200. The 6-200 offers 1 extra seat compared to a 757, and for BHX its no good cos its a C seat!

Not sure that the 757 is all that bad, they certainly appear to carry a few pax (I did a Sunday evening EWR-BHX a couple of weeks ago and it was jammed to the rafters).

It would be nice if they used the 767-400 (more legroom in Y compared to their 777). A few years ago BHX got DC-10s in the summer

I believe belly freight and runway length may also have a bearing on things ???????

767-4 great for punters just a nightmare to balance. It needs decent engines and a larger fuel tank. All boeing did was use the same tank as 7672. Engines only slightly better.

Now for an aircraft that is 50ft longer and a MTOW of some 55,000lbs more you dont need to be a maths genius to work out that this a/c not all it is cracked up to be. Would be great for charter runs through the med but anything over 9 hrs and it struggles.
