Question Why don't BMI tie up with Virgin?

I recently read that some time ago, BMI and Virgin considered the possibility of closer cooperation/merging.
Is it just me or is this a great idea? Surely it would solve many of the problems the carriers are currently experiencing?
Think of the power at LHR that such a collaberation would have - BMI's domestic and european network feeding Virgin's longhaul. BA's dominance would surely be tested.
Singapore Airlines shouldn't get too upset either because BMI are their Star Alliance partner (and Virgin would join a major alliance which would undoubtedly reap rewards).
Isn't this the just kind of consolidation that the airline pundits have been calling for in the post-Sept 11 environment?

The tie-up already exists, apart from actual codeshares.

If you search a EDI-LAX fare, for example, you will as likely get a BD, VS price as BA or BA, AA. People do go for the Virgin brand, and it brings in revenue for BD.

The sticking point is UA, who have been very supportive of BD in terms of starting up in ORD and IAD.

would complicate Bermuda II negs

BMI wants to be in LHR in own right I'd reckon, rather than hanging on Sir Dickie's coat tails - or perhaps have VS do the MAN runs while BMI got the tasty LHR traffic.

Sir Dickie may look that dumb, but he ain't. With BD linked to VS and UA, BA and AA would demand a proper linkage currently denied them due the protests of, among others, BD and VS.

Thus VS+BD full link up is a ways away methinks.

methinks this may also be post 300 - wheeee!

quite simply, the answer to the question is MB. who still thinks he can cut it alongside the new kids on the block!!-yet were he only half as good as he thinks he is, Bmi might well have been a leading star in the Low-Cost sector instead of just making up the numbers! He desparately clings to his"open skies" deal like it will be the great saviour but what will he do with it?? 1 A330 sold, another in negotiation leaving 2 A/C- thats gonna scare the competitors!!! This guy has seriously lost the plot and his recent shabby treatment of his pilots just confirms it..

There are some FFM tie-ups between BD and VS. I score VS miles on BD flights and can redeem for BD and have been able to do so for a number of years. I don't know if it's the same in reverse but presume so.

I agree that a formal tie up would get BA/AA out of their pram very quickly! Personnally, I have always thought that the two would make a good partnership but their styles and history are so different that it would be unlikely to work.
