Question Why don't BMI tie up with Virgin?

I recently read that some time ago, BMI and Virgin considered the possibility of closer cooperation/merging.
Is it just me or is this a great idea? Surely it would solve many of the problems the carriers are currently experiencing?
Think of the power at LHR that such a collaberation would have - BMI's domestic and european network feeding Virgin's longhaul. BA's dominance would surely be tested.
Singapore Airlines shouldn't get too upset either because BMI are their Star Alliance partner (and Virgin would join a major alliance which would undoubtedly reap rewards).
Isn't this the just kind of consolidation that the airline pundits have been calling for in the post-Sept 11 environment?
