Flybe - 8
The last few Flybe flights I have done have been for business, day trips between SOU and BHD, booked 1 to 2 weeks before travel. Average return fare around £120. Hardly premium.
Next week (booked earlier this week) I am doing a day-trip by train from West Berks to Leeds - cost just over £200!

Not is the train usually more expensive, the plane can do it all in a day meaning no need for an overnight hotel and getting back into your very own bed the same night. I think £100 ish for a return domestic flight is pretty good value.
Unfortunately people cannot see that a 189 seat jet six times a day at £9.99 simply won't work on NCL-SOU, EDI-MAN or ABZ-BHX.
flyBE play a vital role in the UK.

Is £60 each way profitable for Wycombe's flight?
And how full was your flight?
The last SOU-BHD day-trip I did (in mid-Jan) was I would say around 60% loaded on the way up and probably more like 90% on the way back (however we were carrying pax for LCY who's flight had been cancelled due to weather there).
Leaving SOU that morning I was sat in departures next to where the first MAN flight of the day was boarding, and I heard the ground staff give a load of 75 (on a 78 seat Dash).

Thanks for that info. We must always remember that most people travel on planes that are full or nearly full - there's few people to report on the half empty ones. We need anoraks who adore examining the CAA data to get the true picture.
A lot of posts on this area of pprune seem to be flights of fancy....

BE would need around a 75% load factor to break even at that fare
Also, on some carriers, it also depends how many are "up front".

And by the way, Wycombe, I went to the loco2 website (recommended) and looked for tickets between High Wycombe and Leeds for next Wednesday week (13th). You could spend almost the whole working day in Leeds for tickets costing just over £100.
Thanks but I don't live in High Wycombe (I used to fly from the airfield there), I'm a bit further away from Leeds in West Berks (as previously mentioned).
There were a few cheaper fares from my location, but the start time was even earlier than I'm already doing, and I don't need to be in Leeds all day. It's also this Weds (5th) that I'm travelling and not the following week (which probably would be a bit cheaper).
I think my general point, that the train is often more expensive, and usually slower, stands.

Last week I paid £175 (inc. seat selection) for NCL-SOU-NCL flying Monday 03/04. A little more than I would have wanted to pay but I have no flexibility, so in that respect, it's not too bad.
Looking at the trains, next Monday (10/04) you would be paying the same, but the quickest journey is 4hrs 45min and involves taking the tube from Kings Cross to Waterloo....

I think we can agree that routes to SOU are reasonably secure because there are enough PAX with time-sensitive journeys, and the alternative - slow but direct, or quicker but changing stations in London - are unattractive.
However some routes such as Scotland to MAN are vulnerable to a more frequent train service (which will be further improved next year when major works are completed in the Manchester area).
I must point out that Flybe tried EDI to Liverpool last year. It didn't last long.

It would probably be counter intuitive for NCL with any long term, medium/long haul aspirations, but I'd quite like to see Flybe do NCL-MAN...
MAN is bigger than ever before, embarking on ambitious new expansion and has a very very good selection of onward connections.
As I say, counter intuitive, but surely with Cathay, Virgin, Singapore and Etihad onboard, and the Avios link, there would be people who would fly to MAN for a connection. I know a lot of people that drive, or get the train to fly from MAN, well timed connections could sway people, and I'm sure NCL would be grateful to have them passing through, maybe having a drink or two, as opposed to getting the train or driving.
With short check in times, a 40 minute flight could rival the 3 hour train for some people in the North East, and could very plausibly be cheaper
