It says on the flybe website that they will email passengers whose flights have been switched to vlm.. just wondered if anybody who has a flight booked with them had received such an email?...
doesn't make much difference to me except I've never flown on a f50 or with vlm, so a change would be good

Probably because of the aspects they adress in their FAQs - to be on the safe side if someone shows up with his machine gun and insists that he specifically booked this BE flight to be able to check it in.

ATR's are also a lot slower than a Q400. If you get a F50 instead of a Q400 I advise you to take sandwiches and a book on anything but the shortest flights.
When the Q400 first appeared, and before it was operated in economy mode, it could keep up with the older BA 146 jets quite easily. I worked them regularly as a controller...gobs of power...even a modest tailwind could give a groundspeed just below 400 knots. Other advantages typical of turbo-props are to keep high until later than Jets which are far more "managed-energy" driven...not unusual to have a turbo-prop eating up a jet speedwise in the approach and intermediate approach phase because of the ability to shed speed very quickly.

I posted some months back that I heard a rumor of VLM basing 3 aircraft in the British Virgin Islands to operate flights to St Maarten and Antigua. Looks like it will be happening from November. Probably involves 3 aircraft, my guess would be leasing to another carrier rather than doing flights themselves. Anyone have any more info on this ?

Things not looking great at all for VLM according to a Belgian newspaper report.
The company made a significant loss last year - rumoured to be the record breaking sum of 13.5 million euro - and recently had to defer the payment of salaries for a few days because of a deposit of 500.000 euro requested by Wirecard, a payment transaction company that they use to manage forward bookings.
Obviously, VLM should have known about this payment (to be paid once a certain threshold of bookings was reached) and more or less when it was due. Their financial situation however seems to be rather precarious if the timing of this deposit meant they couldn't immediately pay staff as well. In their 24 year history, they've never missed a payment to staff and I guess they won't be able to pull off such a stunt ever again.
They just sold 4 of their 10 operational planes earlier this year, but when asked about the state of their business, the new management just states that they got another 6 to sell.

I flew vlm man-rtm on 26/03/16. we had a two hour delay due to crew sickness, I presume they had to fly in replacement crew from Belgium as the aircraft had overnighted in man.
I was a bit surprised to find air france sick bags in the seat pocket, not that they were needed, pretty smooth flight although a tad noisier than other props ive flown in.

Yes just seen the press release now. Shame, seems Waterford just can't catch a break on UK routes (I know LTN still operating but given the mess VLM seems to be in, you have to question how long it will last).
