Haven’t been to Incheon for a few years now but remember it well as having one of the most ridiculous security procedures I have come across.

Here’s the story. As freighter crew we were taken to the main terminal to be met by an agent who took us through the terminal to get on a bus for the not inconsiderable journey over to the freight ramp. Of course this meant having to go through the regular security lines, however there was no method of checking in our suitcases so they had to be dragged through the scanners too.

Inevitably the screeners found something they didn’t like – nail clippers etc. in this baggage. Much shaking of heads, sucking of teeth and protesting that these items weren’t allowed airside and threats of having them permanently confiscated next time we tried to take them through the scanner. Needless to
say we relied on not meeting the same security person next time we passed through, how could we be away for 14 days or more without anything normally prohibited from hand baggage when passing airside?

Such items were removed from the baggage and given to the accompanying agent who carried them to the bus and put them back in our hands as we boarded. Madness.

Hopefully the procedures have been refined somewhat since my last visit – the terminal was impressive and a great improvement on SEL where I had previously operated into.

Sorry

I'm real sorry to hear about that.

If you were mistreated in any way, i assure you airport service has gotten a lot better.

In terms of the security procedure, i'm pretty sure they changed things. But again, i'm real sorry to hear.

Thanks for the comments, it is greatly apprecitated!

You can't get there from here!

Well, this must be the oldest thread I have ever added a post to! Over 12 years since the last post.

Still quite ridiculous if you make a mistake like I did today.

I've transited Incheon several times as a SLF over the past few years and never had problems. I arrived in Terminal 1 after a three hour night flight from Hanoi and I had over nine hours to kill before boarding my flight to Canada, so I had planned to take a room in the airside transit hotel. Unfortunately, the Terminal 1 hotel was closed so I decided to go to the one in Terminal 2 and took the shuttle train. Having arrived in Terminal 2, I discovered that due to the peculiar security systems, I couldn't get to the transit hotel.

So I decided to go back to Terminal 1, but discovered that the shuttle train is a one-way system - I couldn't go back*. After explaining my predicament to a very helpful girl at an Information counter, she arranged for me to be escorted back. My security officer escort was obviously used to this, because he apologized to me for the ridiculous procedure!

* To be fair, there is a notice by the doors where you board the train, but I didn't notice it in my befuddled state. I only noticed it on the return trip.

I remember it to be the most passenger friendly hub airport ever. When you need to take off your shoes at the security checkpoint you are provided with interim slippers so you don't have to walk on your socks. The slippers are cleaned and sealed. You get to sit on chairs to put them on or off. When you fill in the fine print customs declaration you are provided with reading glasses in different strengths in case you need them. When I killed time I got trapped myself having gone to the airside satellite terminal. But they were kindly assisting me back.
