Talking AI 777 to fly between US Cities ?

Hey folks, Heard from a very reliable source that AI is planning to hold talks with An American Major Carrier for operating code share flights between major airports with in USA and providing onward connection to India. Air India is also planning to fly its 777 in these routes.
So next time a passenger books a ticket between SFO and JFK they should not be surprised to be sittting on an Air India 777 flight !

AI can fly between US cities, but may not book pax between US cities.
In other words, the AI flight goes SFO-JFK-BOM. Pax may be booked SFO-BOM or JFK-BOM, not SFO-JFK.

US air carrier codeshare flt numbers would be for the same routes the pax are booked on. Not SFO-JFK.

But can the US Carrier book the pax on SFO-JFK sector but put them on an AI Plane ?
