flyLAL shareholders ask state for help

Source: airline proposes that government buy company for one litas

According to the Verslo Zinios daily, the shareholders of indebted Lithuanian airline flyLAL have approached the new Lithuanian government to say that they are prepared to sell the company's shares to the state for one litas. The Ministry of Transport and Communications has confirmed that a special task group will analyse the company’s finances. Eligijus Masiulis, the new minister, says that the group will also investigate why other airlines are choosing to close routes from Vilnius Airport. He neither confirms nor denies the newspaper’s sources’ information that flyLAL’s owners have asked the government to take over the company. Gediminas Ziemelis, flyLAL Group’s chairman of the board, comments: "It is not a direct request for support. We have made a number of suggestions to the ministry on how to regulate the aviation market in Lithuania, since the market is disorganized.”

Dear flyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines’ passengers,

The Management of SE Vilnius International Airport hereby advise you that flyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines’ passengers might not be served at the airport of the capital starting from 1 st January 2009.
During 2008 SE Vilnius International Airport met its contractual obligations with flyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines. However, settlements for the services provided during August and the following months in accordance with the Legal Acts and mutual agreements have not been effected by flyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines. If flyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines will continue malignant breach of its contractual obligations, starting from 1 January 2009 SE Vilnius International Airport will refuse provision of any services to this airline.

I was ready to attend their type+500hrs training in few weeks!
Now I'm not even sure that there will be time enough to finish the program before the crack..

It wasn't really my goal to be hired by flylal at the end of the 500hrs (I'm coming from Italy!) but who could know I thought when everything started.. mhmmm... dark time for wings..
There's anybody who work for them that can tell me anything else (in case I really need SOMETHING ELSE!) to help me to decide?
thanks!

SCH buys FlyLAL for $1m
Swiss Capital Holdings (SCH) has purchased FlyLAL Lithuanian Airlines for $1m with an agreement to pay the airline's debt of EUR1m ($1.4m). The investor's ownership will commence from January 23, 2009. FlyLAL has been privatised and held by Lithuanian investors since 2005. Its government last month refused the airline's offer of a 51 per cent buy out, forcing the airline to close its routes to Istanbul Ataturk, Rome Fiumicino and Paris Charles de Gaulle.

FlyLAL sold to Swiss company...

Reliability of flyLAL"s Swiss investor in doubt

Danuta Pavilenene, BC, Vilnius, 13.01.2009

The media has started doubting reliability of the Swiss company SCH Swiss Capital Holdings, which recently purchased the Lithuanian company flyLAL – Lithuanian airlines.

According to Lrytas.lt/ELTA, the company provides scarce information about its activities, investments and staff. Its web site contains neither telephone numbers of head office nor fax number. Only an email of the company is displayed. Jan Erick J.Jansson, head of the company, answered a phone call and explained that the web site had to be closed and updated due to various technical obstacles, therefore, there was no information.

However, he could not say whether more information on the activities and investments of the company would be given in the future. According to unofficial data, the company has hardly any assets and its authorized capital amounts to about 100,000 litas (28,956 euros).

Lrytas.lt consulted experts, who explained that the so-called Swiss company might belong to the same persons, who owned flyLAL. Usually, such fictitious companies, indicating no activities and having only offices, are established to be sold to businessmen fouling their trail.

From the other sources:
Lithuania's national carrier, FlyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines, had its operating certificate revoked Friday over fears that its financial troubles could affect flight safety. As a result of the move, which was announced by the Lithuanian Civil Aviation Administration (LCAA), all FlyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines flights will be grounded indefinitely from Saturday.

'The certificate has been suspended due to the poor financial condition of FlyLAL,' said Kestutis Auryla of the LCAA.
'There has been no official word yet, but as we understand it there will be no flights,' a FlyLAL employee told Deutsche Presse- Agentur dpa on Friday.

On January 7, the airline's owners agreed to sell it to industrial holding company SCH Swiss Capital Holding in a deal that was due to be completed by January 23.
It is unclear if the deal will be affected by the decision to ground FlyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines' fleet of planes.

On Friday hundreds of passengers intending to take flights over the weekend were being directed to the airline's website but it contained no information about alternative arrangements, raising the possibility that they will be left stranded

Small country for whom the economics of having its own airline were probably limited, but still probably quite a blow for the people of Vilnius.

Am trying to work out who will move in to fill the void. Guesses are:

airBaltic - probably filled with glee at the moment !
SAS - difficult for them to ignore their backyard, despite their own problems
Lufty - upgrade of service
AF / KL - have lost codeshare partner so will probably restart own service from AMS
Wizz - probably been waiting for a moment like this.
A Russian airline - something to Moscow ?
Easyjet - uncertain given FR's flights from Kaunas to UK
Ryanair - boost for Kaunas ?

Sorry, but this is end of story...

Lithuania's debt-ridden FlyLAL flagship carrier grounded

VILNIUS (AFP) – Lithuanian aviation authorities on Friday grounded the country's troubled flagship carrier FlyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines as a court froze its assets at its creditors' request, the Baltic News Service (BNS) reported.
FlyLAL was ordered to halt all scheduled flights as of Saturday. FlyLAL Charters, its charter arm, would remain in service.
"Civil aviation operations are heavily regulated and supervised. FlyLAL is not meeting the requirements due to its difficult situation," Transport Minister Eligijus Masiulis told the BNS after the suspension of the company's license to fly.
A Lithuanian court also froze the cash-strapped airline's assets. On January 9 FlyLAL announced it had been sold to the Zurich-based group Swiss Capital Holdings (SCH).
At the time, a FlyLAL spokesperson told AFP the contract for SCH's acquisition of 100 percent of FlyLAL shares was expected to come into force on January 23.
Unconfirmed reports pegged the price tag of the transactions at one million dollars.
Under the terms of the deal, one million euros' worth of FlyLAL's debt would be paid off to Vilnius' international airport, reports said.
Lithuanian officials said Friday, FlyLAL would remain grounded until its future become clear.
FlyLAL is market leader in Lithuania, a Baltic state of 3.4 million people.
Despite increasing its passenger numbers by 52 percent in 2008, the carrie is struggling.
Lithuanian officials have blamed its woes on tough competition from airBaltic, based in neighbouring Latvia, as well as the effects of high fuel prices and the global financial crisis.
FlyLAL was privatised in 2005, with Lithuanian groups ZIA Valda, Indeco, Sanitex and VA REALS holding stakes of 40.73 percent, 27.15 percent, 22.63 percent and 9.49 percent respectively.
In 2007, it posted a loss of 8.1 million litas (2.35 million euros, 3.2 million dollars) on revenues of 262.9 million litas.
FlyLAL's debts are currently pegged around 89 million litas.

Sad news for lithuanian people, exactly, who is working for FlyLAL. Bigest part of the Lithuanian aviators know, how the all things are done inside FlyLAL. Too much black money, and also too big ambitions for so small company...

Wonder what this was about:

Monday January 12, 2009
FlyLAL Lithuanian Airlines has been purchased by SCH Swiss Capital Holdings for $1 million plus an agreement to cover debt of some €1 million ($1.4 million).
"We were looking for an airline to purchase, and this is a good company to invest in. . .FlyLAL can be a very strong regional carrier," SCH CEO Jan Erik Jansson told the Associated Press, adding that the firm does not "see these debts as a big problem." The sale will take effect on Jan. 23, according to reports.

Wonder who will snap up the two (?) Saab 2000s. They might be of interest particularly for Eastern Airways.

Now huge potential for Wizz here. I know they started and then cancelled Kaunas, but a base of 2 or 3 aircraft would really work for routes like Stockholm, Oslo, London, Glasgow, Paris, Frankfurt, Milan and Barcelona.
