If you ignore the bmiBaby staff at Hastings House, probably no more than 300.
The majority are senior management, IT, Rev Man, procurement and other back office functions that would be absorbed by any other airline that may wish to buy it as a functioning airline. Regardless of what happens, there will be job losses. I know it is not what people want to hear but that is the sad reality.
The centre of gravity is LHR, the Castle is an unnecessary cost and no buyer wants it. Even if BA or VS were to get the airline, there will be job losses at front line staff level as well.
None of this is good news

Virgin & Etihad Would be a right laugh after all it was JH that started the whole bmi stands for nothing thing!! I'm sure that in an ideal world DLH would like to sell it as a whole, but it's not an ideal world the preferred bidder will not necessarily be the highest offer I suspect.
Racedo you are usually good sport but please, a combined IAG / BD LHR operation is still comparably less dominany than the equivalent KLM operation at AMS, AF at CDG or LH at FRA as I am sure you know, SRB can moan but BA can help a lot of people avoid the dole here. Is a middle east hobby airline going to do any better? unlikely!
Think the majority of it was organic growth.

Racedo klm bought Martinair and transavia which represented virtually all the serious players in the Dutch Market.
Lufthansa bought eurowings, Germanwings, Cityline was formed after the buyout of DLT and then the various shareholdings of other European airlines.
The combination of AF and KLM barely raised an eyebrow at the EU.

BA will not stand by and let the Arabs and Sir Dickie link up at the centre of their world. That would be a nightmare for them, the deep pocketed Abu Dhabi chaps and the anti-BA Branson, fireworks at Waterside me thinks! It's a good job this one isn't on eBay, think of the commision, the money required if there's a bidding war could be considerably more than bmi and its slots are worth. It's all down to Lufthansa, they'll have a preferred owner that fits into the Star family and I guess that's in the favour of Virgin/Etihad. This is going to be very, very interesting...

It's absolutely typical that Branson is pretending he has any chance whatsoever of buying BMI. Virgin can't afford it, and if their co-owners ploughed the money in, then you really WOULD see some serious asset stripping! SQ would definitely want their pound of flesh!!

A shame
Don't ever forget the b.....d Bishop, who played with his airline toy till he got bored and aged. He had no concern for people in his company and is responsible for the sad mess that is bmi.

Depends if the 'management' are the same as those who ran it 10 or so years ago. If so, almost certainly not. If not, I would wish them all the luck in the world, 'cause they're gonna need it. Sadly, lovely little friendly airlines like BussAir used to be have no relevance in 2011.

Sweet little airlines that leave airplanes on the ground for several hours a day and whose crews work 300 hrs a year will never make money.
New management, new contracts, new practices = different airline :-)
Different airline = profit.
