British Airways to buy 12 A380s
A380. Load of rubbish. Its going to cost BA in the long run. You can't send a flapping goose like that just anywhere. Rostering on that will be boring. Dead boring.

Next step.
So when can we expect BA to announce the rest of fleet replacement order?
12 x A380s and 24 x 787s. 14 to replace the 767s, 20 will replace 747-400s, presumably meaning 2 are for expansion.
That still leaves 37 747-400s to be replaced.
Any ideas when this order will be announced? Is it due this year?

I hope that BA will outfit those planes mostly with higher yielding Business Class seats. It's bad enough sitting in the back of a 747, not sure what it's going to be like sitting in the back of this bus.

Perhaps they may get rid of the rest of their non RR equiped 777s, if there are any left.

Canīt Belive we just keep getting it wrong . Just goes to prove that accountants run the world ! Not one single bit of staff or passenger consultation. The 747-8 was the perfect replacement for the 400īs maybe a few A380īs for the HKG and LAX , seems itīs now completely out of the running even to replace the rest of the 400īs.

Is this true?
'Both the A380 and B787 are rated as producing a quarter of the noise level of the B747-400.'
Are we talking absolute sound levels here? Or some kind a logarithmic scale? Or some meaningless management measure like decibels-per-available-seat-kilometre?
Remarkable if so.

747-400 QC2
A380/787 QC0.5
So you can land four A380/787s for every 747-400 allowed under the night quota total.
Well, not quite as simple as that as there is a total movement limit as well as a total quota limit.

So a good time to bid for the A380 would be around 2020. Can you imagine the "Biggles Factor"?
I was told 40 years ago, never bid to go on a type until it's been in service for at least 10 years. You will then only get manual amendments once every couple of months.

Did Boeing's offering of GEnx only on 747-8 hurt them with BA?
WHBM -why would BA give a stuff about marginal constituencies?

Controversial, moi?
Not one single bit of staff or passenger consultation
BA may do a lot of things wrong but when it comes to research and aircraft purchase they will have had many people looking at all aspects of the possibilities for a long time. I hope they have it right but I am sure that they are more clued up than most of us here.

Finally something this SLF member (who happens to be a sound engineer) can comment on!
I did some research on the Heathrow "quota count" and found the following quote:
While it's true that 3dB(SPL) change represents a doubling (or halving) of noise energy, because of the way the human ear works, 3dB also represents roughly the smallest difference in sound level the average punter can detect. (A trained sound person can usually hear 1.5-2.0dB changes).
The dramatic "quartering" of the sound level from the A380 or B787 will represent a 6dB difference, which, in sound terms is a very small change.
The spin doctors strike again!

For this scheme, aircraft are grouped into 'QC' bands dependent on their noise performance measured during certification - the noisier aircraft falling into the higher QC bands. The value of the bands doubles every 3 decibels, to reflect the nature of noise measurement - i.e. a doubling in noise energy for every 3 decibel increase.
